BMW 2-Series & M2

I would very much consider the M1 if it came in hatch(need 4 doors and practicality)

Looking at spending big on my next car in 2 years.

Currently Macan is best bet for me as I care little for RS3 and A45.

Is the 2 Series Grandcoupe off the cards?

I saw one in the Paramatta mall on Sunday while going to see Mad Max. Looks like a totally different car from the pig nose 1-series.

Please no. The odd number series are for 4 door cars and, yes I know the 3 and 4 series are more different that just the number of doors but come on! They shouldn't have changed the nomenclature system if this is going to be the case.

^ I understand your point. I also have a dis-taste on current BMW nomenclature, but at the moment...it works for BMW.

-> On the other hand, at least its a way better bet than a (upcoming) FWD 1 series sedan ( :scared: ), if thats the case...I'd rather pick the MINI Hardtop 5-Door. :indiff:

What's the alternative, 7 different body styles of 3 series, half of which of differently styled front and rear ends? A 5 series that has the nose and roof and tail of a 6 series, but is still called a 5 series? Besides which, the 3 series (odd number) Coupe existed alongside the 8 series and 6 series (even number) Coupes for years and nobody complained about that.

The market wants 4 door coupes, therefore BMW will make them... what to call them is a secondary issue and I don't think there was much of a better way of doing it, even though admittedly the market needed time to adjust. The 2 series Active Tourer and Gran Tourers are the cars that make a mockery of the naming systems - they should have been 1-ers.

Bring on the 2GC though, I think it would popular. 1-er Saloon (F52) is apparently China only (to begin with) so BMW will still need soemthing to offset the A3/CLA numbers.

I see it as BMW want their customers to feel BMW don't sell wagons, hatches and sedans. Only coupes and tourings.

I completely understand BMW.

I, for one, am looking for a coupe-type car that still has enough room in the back for my passengers to enjoy a comfortable ride.

Right now a second hand A5 seems to be the only option as new A3s or 4 series are horribly expensive.

What about the M6 Gran Coupe then?

It turned out alright.

Yeah, it turned out alright because it was well received as one of the best looking cars on the market. The rest haven't exactly had similar success.
Meh, not a huge fan; would rather have a coupe or just get an M5 if I want 4 doors.
Which is why it did so well. It combined the coupe's looks onto a 4-door car. It is literally, the best of both vehicles.

I think BMWs Coupe sedans in both 4 series and 6 series look the best on the market.

The 2 series grandcoupe will need a shooting brake version imo, because rear headroom will be tragic.

"Just" is the word I find interesting here... It makes it sound like the choice was pre-determined and made without much thought - the 'safe' choice... It's a fine choice to make, but it reeks of simply discounting or overlooking something else simply because it's new or different.

Not really picking on your choice, just something I see a lot when people are talking about niche vehicles.

Ok this has gone really off topic as it's not about the 2 series I really don't see the point of the M5 and its rivals. It's barely any quicker than an M3 and not much bigger inside, and then it's not exactly a sports car or track car so it just seems like a status symbol car. (Not saying it's a bad car just a little pointless, because if you want a car for touring you then buy an M6)

In germany the 4series GC is really do well. I barely see any new 3series sedans anymore.

@Clark: A 5 series has many more assists, luxury/comfort and has a much higher built quality then a 3/4 series. Don't know whether the M5 goes faster around the track though.

It's much bigger inside then the M3 imo and when you drive it feels like it has much more power then a M3 apart from handling it would leave one in the dust(Atleast going by my driving expereince of them both, the M5 is certainly a higher quality car inside aswell, with only leather and Alcantara visible on the entire cabin basically, where the M3 has more plastic).

The F10 M5 is one of the most underrated cars on the market in terms of HP and atleast has 50hp more at the flywheel then the claimed 550hp

Watch Video for example on how much power it actually has when compared to a car that has more power and less weight then it's ''claimed'' statistics.

The M6 on the other hand is near useless at carrying rear passengers long distance unless they are all well under 6 foot.

If the 2GC ends up looking like that render up there it'd instantly become one of my favourite BMWs. It's well-proportioned in a way the current 2 Series isn't.

Well if you're just talking BMWs the M5 is a better drivers' car than the current M3/M4...

For a while I had similar feelings. I've never really been keen on cars bigger than the 3 Series. But some of the cars in the M5's class are immensely satisfying, and they do have a power advantage at the moment (they have to, so people actually buy them). And realistically they are quite a bit bigger than the cars in the class below - again, they have to be differentiated to some degree otherwise nobody would buy a 520d over a 320d, let alone the M versions.

I just remember sitting in an F10 M5 when it first came out, I was amazed at how such a big car can feel so small inside.

The cockpit environment is fairly cosy, but in terms of actual space it's pretty big. 3 Series are better than they used to be for interior volume but the 5 is one of those cars that'll happily seat a quartet of 6' German guys. And fling them towards the horizon pretty quickly.

In comparison I've been in the back of our long-term M4. It's not a pleasant place to spend time. Nice enough in the front but really not designed for rear-seat passengers.
