Sheffield Wednesday were in Portugal doing a warm-weather training camp during that week.

They've returned home this week, and it's projected to be 41 degrees in Sheffield. Should probably have saved the carbons and not bothered going.

It's largely based on a bollocks image showing an "old" style temperature map (doctored, of course) and a "new" style heat gradient map (also doctored, of course) as if one represents how friendly media used to be towards summer and the other represents how fearmongering media is now about summer.

Of course weather reports use both styles, and the fact that 40+ is a dark burgundy is down to the fact it's a temperature the designers had only ever expected to be in Africa and other equatorial regions, not ****ing Penge.
Might have known you'd find a way to shoehorn Sheffield Wednesday into this weather conversation 😂

Blue Peter garden has unofficially recorded 40C today.

chilling in an ice cold Wetherspoons 🥶😀

Just hovering a fraction below 40*C on the garden thermometer (in the shade, a few miles north of Heathrow). Borderline miserable, downstairs is tolerable as everything's been closed off but nothing can be done about the heat build up on the upper floor... if this weather was persisting over a week rather than 36 hours I'd probably lose my marbles before the end of it. :grumpy:

Only saving grace is that I got Covid a couple of weeks ago rather than last weekend... and that I got a flask as a birthday gift the day before this all kicked off. That thing is a life-saver!

One of my workmates - from Kerala, India - is moaning something awful about the heat... it's 29 degrees outside, but it can't be more than 22-23 degrees inside. He was "tired" after writing something I'd asked him to write (for one hour... that he's had 3 months to do...) so he "went for a walk", and now he's "too hot". I mean, seriously... He's now hunting for a fan that "someone has stolen" from 'his' desk (it's not his desk, it's a hotdesk...), even though he's sitting in the most shaded part of the office. I'm sitting nearest the window and it's not even remotely "too hot" to work. On the bright side, my other workmate - a Greek girl - wants to go for ice cream in half an hour. Hopefully the other guy will be so reluctant to go outside again that he won't bother coming with us, as he's been nipping my tits all day.

edit: Dear God, he's just taken his flip-flops off...

Results from the fourth ballot in the Conservative leadership race:

Rishi Sunak - 118 (+3)
Penny Mordaunt - 92 (+10)
Liz Truss - 86 (+15)
Kemi Badenoch - 59 (+1)
____
Out after Round 4
Kemi Badenoch

Out after Round 3
Tom Tugendhat

Out after Round 2
Suella Braverman

Out after Round 1
Nadhim Zahawi
Jeremy Hunt

So, "Truss gains support" and Sunak fails to reach the 120 vote mark, which guarantees a candidate entry to the Final Round. Mordaunt still leads Truss, but only by 6 votes. That said, it is hard to see how Truss could win from here - which surely can only be a good thing.

IMHO, this whole charade has been a total waste of time. All it has done is lay bare the divides in the Conservatives, even at the highest level, with candidates openly attacking each other and even rubbishing policies that they themselves have supported until now. And for what? So that the obvious three top candidates can end up battling it out with each other anyway...? Seriously, This 'Big Brother' format is utterly pointless.

Ugh, if it wasn't bad enough, now we have to suffer James ****ing Corden too.
I felt that .gif really captured the full extent of my discomfort.

At least we did go for a nice ice cream - and he paid

So weather app is telling me this…

And the house thermostat is talking me 29°

Maybe someone smarter than me can explain that when we have hot weather in the UK people who have spent time in hot countries say “it’s a different kind of heat”

One of my Polish friends at work was heard saying when it’s cold in the UK it’s worse than back in Poland despite them hitting a lot colder in terms of temp. It’s the humidity or something else.

Can't talk for the cold side, but I've spent a bit of time in hotter than the UK locations.

Much of it is down to building and infrastructure design, countries which are routinely hot are (to a degree) designed with that in mind, so the houses and businesses are buuld to retain less heat and shed it quicker as well, even without A/C. Take for example windcatchers, traditionally used prior to AC around Persia.

Humidity does also play a factor in it, personally I would rather dry heat that wet heat (as sweating still works in dry heat), and our cultural active times don't help either. Ever wonder why southern Europeans like having a nice break early afternoon and eat later in the evening? Now you know.

33.5°C in my office at the moment. 37°C outside.

Went for a walk earlier on, randomly saw a couple of dead birds, not sure if it's heat related or not, but I'm going to top up the bird bath at home anyway.

Thanks for the info.

Im now getting sick of so many people on my FB feed (family and friends) acting like this is the same every summer and trotting out the ‘76 tripe, not taking the heat serious as a sign of global warming.

Yes it’s a few more degrees hotter that past summers but if this trend keeps going it will be too hot before we know it and can do anything.

@MatskiMonk we don’t get too many birds close to us as we’re in near enough back to back terrace with small yards and lots of cats knocking about.

Our cat is actually an indoor one and he doesn’t seem to be phased at all. However we have the cellar door open for him and it’s around 19°/20° down there. The dog seems to be taking it all in his stride too, however a working cocker with no walkies apart from at about 9pm/10pm and only to the green at the bottom of our street, he’s missing that run. Even in the heat.

God only knows how Truss benefitted the most from vacant Tugenhat supporters. Truss will probably attract most of Badenoch's supporters (who was by far the most popular in the polls amongst voters), and with one of these three in charge, the Tories are basically guaranteed to lose the next election.

Yep, the cream of the bottom of the barrel will soon be in charge.

I don't know how genuine this Britain First press release endorsing Badenoch is but if it is then I'm not sorry she's out.

IMHO, it is already too late to prevent the trend from continuing well beyond that we are ready and able to cope with. It is now a question of avoiding a complete catastrophe in 30-50 years' time (and beyond), and even then I don't believe we are anywhere near being able to limit the damage to below catastrophic.

True climate scientists never stood a chance against their numerous and ultra-powerful opponents, dismissed as "alarmist" for daring to suggest that we might be heading towards any negative outcomes; however, there never was any good reason to believe that we, as a species, are not eminently capable of ******* up our environment - and we obviously have, and even now are continuing to do so almost without restraint.

with one of these three in charge, the Tories are basically guaranteed to lose the next election.

Ours are shut in yesterday and today. Both much more lethargic than normal, but if they weren't shut in, they'd probably be sprawled out on the drive way slowly getting heat stroke.

Same here, our three have been locked in for the last two days.

One is a kitten that's not yet been outside, so he's totally not phased by it, the other two have however moaned about it a lot!

It's coming from the east so I'm surprised it hasn't hit you
Unfortunately (this time) the downs Bath is on tend to dump rain on you and it doesn't always make it here.

It's now overcast, so fingers crossed it still has some wet stuff left in it.

We’re not due any rain until Friday.

I’ll be just happy when the temp drops to around 20° again.

I don’t do heat of any kind.

@Touring Mars I agree, we’ve stretched our planet too far and unless we have some miraculous breakthrough in planetary engineering and we have some huge atmospheric processors at hand then we’ve certainly gone beyond the tipping point.

The '76 thing is especially bizarre given that the max temperature reached in 1976 was 36°C and even then there was a huge spike in hospitalisations due to sunstroke and heat-related heart attacks.

It's landed, but it's pretty much the lightest rain I've ever seen and its evaporating as soon as it hits the ground. So it's pushing the humidity up without much impact on temperature, thus making things worse!

Edit: And it's stopped, @PeterJB clearly stole most of it.
