I live in Taipei, and everyone here likes to boast about our "worlds tallest building". Personally I think it's ugly as hell, but I did go up to the 90th floor the other day for a party.

I was told the elevator I took is the fastest in the world, it took 20 something seconds.

Really really tall building. Located in the Middle East. Where are a majority of terrorists located? In the Middle East. Sounds like a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

I'll take three.

Well let them attack their own country:-it won't have any effect, and if they decide to destroy they're >>:dunce:<
And maybe THEY start a war in the middle east themselves instead of spreading it around the whole dang GLOBE!!!

It may sound harsh, but it's just common sence that just came up to me, sorry

Yes, the lift is the fastest in the world.

The lift travels upwards at 38mph, and travels all 101 floors with 24 people in it in 30 seconds. :ill: The lift goes downwards in 1 minute though.

The lift pressure control system, which adjusts the atmospheric pressure inside a car by using suction and discharge blowers, preventing "ear popping".

It has an active control system which tries to balance the lift more finely and remove the sources of vibrations.

It has streamlined cars to reduce the whistling noise produced by running the lifts at a high speed inside a narrow shaft.

A very technical lift. It cost them $2 million I think.

Yah, thanks for the info. The ride was VERY smooth, one of the smoothest elevators i've ever been in. So in a way, it doesn't feel super fast, but when they dim the lights, and you look up at the digital display showing a 3D model of the elevator flying up the building, you know its fast. It plays this spacey galactic background music too, kinda cute.

Damn, until your tower was built ( I like it btw, nice building), I've been in the fastest elevator, no obviously the second, Land Mark Tower, Yokohama... ;)

How is the view ? Must be great at night....

PS
Or they just have elevators for a certain range of floors. Like, 10 for floors 1-12, 10 for floors 13-24, 10 for floors 24-36 etc.
so you mean that those for floors 13 to 24 start at 0, rush through 1-12 and stop first at 13?

that is done in a lot of skyscrapers in my hometown, frankfurt and it does indeed increase capacity, but only slightly and that still won't help when the building becomes too tall because you still need more of them and they just take up too much space then. there is no point in a building were half the space in the first 30 floors is taken up by elevators.

they are already using lots of clever tricks like this or the bi-level express elevators. in one of the highest skyscrapers in frankfurt they have a computer that controls 6 elevators as a group together and always calculates demand and positions of the elevators in order to send the one that would be the quickest. that also increases capacity, but again only by about 10%.

all these tricks are already used today in skyscrapers from 250m to 500m. so when you want to built one that is 700 or 800 metres tall, there is no way round installing 50 or even more percent more elevators.

they did not attack the WTC because of its height...anf they won't attack the tower in dubai because of their hatred against the USA, western world or christians...

The Taipei 101 looks ok, but I like the look of the Sears Tower or something better.

hmm...well Dubai is a very peaceful place to live...just cause its in the middle east doenst mean we have friggin war and destruction..
its just a lovely place to live

the only prob is ...yes they do like to spend ALOT on projects
this is whats underway -
-4 man-made Islands
-the worlds largest shopping mall
-the worlds first underwater shopping mall
-Dubai land (My favorite )- includes a huge themepark with ice skying facility
- Sports City Check this out

now this is what is already come up
-FIA CIRCUIT - Dubai Autodrome and Business Park..THIS YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUT ...few days ago they just opened up a new racing and driving schools....with Subaru WRX's as learner's car ;)
and I was already a race marshall in 2004 oct... the FIA GT,Touring and single seater renault took place here

..so this is one of the reasons why Dubai is a nice place to live.....its gonna be a big tourists spot
and why I like it here is cause 3/4 of the population here are Indians ...and I'm Indian :)

WTF... that won't be cheap... I can see the billions of dollars flow away.... but if that thing is gonna be as great as the zapping through the 25 min trailer indicated me, I will be there ! Looks awsome... 👍

I say it will topple over, before it is completed, but I will first bet that it won't ever get completed.

Nice statement. Of course it won't get finished, because it's gonna fall over before it gets completed. OR will it not get to the stage of falling over because they just decide not to finish it?

Just came across this.

If any of you were thinking this will not be built then think again since it's already on the 50th floor :D

The midget on the right of this pic is the freedom tower to be built on top of the world trade centre site btw :D

Still another 2 years till it's finished though. Not as good looking as the freedom tower though, impressive none the less.

What's going to be next? Space Scrapers?
So that you can hop in your spaceship on the roof and go to the moon?

I think they're just making buildings to big. Just think of the risk when there's a huge fire. Don't want to be in that building when that happens

It'll just be hit by a hyjacked by terroists in a Jumbo Jet.

On a lighter note, if it does get completed (and not blown up) than it will be a great achievment, but as a few have said already, why do buildings need to be hundreds of meters high?

No it won't, the next time an attack like that happens it'll be blown up either from the inside, by a car bomb, etc but not by a plane because that has already happened and there are now security measures against stuff like that. The next time a tower is blown up it'll be in an unexpected way I'll guarantee :)
Anyway, why the hell would someone blow up a mostly condo tower like burj rather than a giant office tower which has 10 times more people inside waiting to be killed.

Anyway, the burj and a crapload of other towers in China look waaaaay better than the freedom tower. The burj is graceful and soaring while the freedom tower is bland, boxy and boring. Also it seems to be a tower representing fear judging by the base which is pretty much a bunker.

BTW, here's an American tower I find looks much better, it's to be built in Chicago and is 2000ft high! Of course it's still nowhere near the 2600ft needed to top the burj but who cares as long as it looks good :D

fordham6ck.jpg

Wow, now that Fordham Spire would be a sight to see! (as would the others)

The Fordham Spire is quite nice looking. Apparently it's based on the shape of a native Indian camp fire. There are two other buildings soon to go up in Chicago that will drastically change the skyline. The Trump International building (415m, 2008), and the Waterview Tower (319m, 2009) and of course the Fordham Spire, will end the dominance that the Sears, Aon and Hancock buildings have on the skyline. Should look great in 5 years time. :)

^^ Well, it's just a developer trying to make money and luring buyers by proposing something outrageous like this. I know this is a condo tower and I wonder how much the penthouse would cost :D :D

BTW, I remember seeing a few more of these towers, I'll dig them up later if I don't forget

^^ That's a reason for the weird shapes of buildings nowadays. The old world trade centre for example was a wind tunnel nightmare, new buildings use their shape to counteract these.

Anyway, here are some more supertowers I found, and I'm sure there are more especially in China. So how about an apartment on the 150th floor? :D

By the way, these are all tower that are either getting built, or are really likely to get built so no grand visions here. Everyone always mentions these giant japanese proposals that don't have a chance in hell of being built
