OK, continuing my Race Report, we were up to Lap 7. Running order was:-
David, HP, Blitz, Gadget, i-was and Rosen. With the track now at 73% and drying, HP dives into pits to swap Wets for Inters. David stays out, still lwith a slightly damaged car, and still on the same inters he started the race on.
Halfway around lap 7 I make a mistake and make heavy contact with armco, leaving damage to both front corners AND engine damage. I limp back to the pits and pull onot the grass to allow i-was-ere to safely pass, moving him up to 4th.
At the end of Lap 7, Blitz pits and refuels, as does i-was, but i-was takes on less fuel and jumps Blitz in the pitlane. This short fill would end up costing i-was dearly later in the race. i-was changes to Inters (track now at 66%) and Blitz makes an early move onto RM tyres. I also pitted to fix damage, and also make the move to RM, probably a lap earlier than I'd have liked, but the damage dictated that. Immediately I find it still very greasy for RM's and almost go into the kitty litter at the first corner. Blitz had made exactly the same mistake only a bit worse, probably finding the change from full wets to RM quite a shock. He manages to find the grass and gravel 2 more times before leaving the GP circuit, and on that third excursion I manage to slip past and back into 4th. Although I was finding it slippery, I'd only changed from Inters to RM's, so the difference wasn't as great as Blitz was finding going from Wets to RM's.
At the end of Lap 8, HP's stop the previous lap had meant David's lead was out to 1:09, and HP had only managed to close 5 seconds on David the previous lap. Blitz had to pit again to fix the damage from multiple offs, but elected to stay on RM's as track was now dried out to 49% humidity. The new rubber didn't stop him making another (damageless) couple of excursions in the kitty litter on in the GP loop. This had allowed Rosenlundaren (now also on RM's) to close to within 10 seconds of Blitz until he got dialled in and then managed to start to pull away again.
At the end of Lap 9 the leader stopped for fuel and a new set of Inters. This stop cut his lead to just 16 seconds. The following Lap HP made his move and pitted to take on a set of RM, and a splash of fuel, emerging about 45secs behind David. Within half a lap he started to really make use of those tyres on the rapidly drying track, and was taking a second or more PER SECTOR out of David ever less comfortable gap. Meanwhile i-was-ere was driving a very bent car but still manage decent pace on his Inters.....until half way around the lap he ran out of fuel meaning a very slow chug back to the pits, and allowing me to close in and make the pass as he was refuelling.
At the end of Lap 11 David, seeing how quickly HP was catching him was forced to stop and change to RM's too. He emerged from the pits just 10 secs in front of HP, and within a few kms, HP was right on David's bumper, with a lap and a half to go. Race on!
Meanwhile, 5 mins back down the road I was running 3rd, and pleasingly on the pace of the leaders as they battled for victory. i-was-ere was about 25 seconds behind me with Blitz a similar distance behind i-was and Rosen a little further back.
On the back straight of the penultimate lap HP drafts past David to wrestle from him the lead which he'd held majestically for 10 laps. On the 13th and final lap HP quickly pulled about 4 seconds and was looking set for a win. But then, as he was pushing hard to ensure a gap before the back straight he makes a mistake and picks up light offside damage to his GTR. David closes up and as they go onto the final long straight is an ideal 10 car lengths behind to execute a perfect draft pass as they crest the hill under the Bilstien Bridge side by side, then holds it together at the last chicane to take a well deserved win after a truly epic race. Can't wait until next weeks already!
