Mitsubishi, Subaru, VW and Toyota have designed their VGT Concepts on exisiting concept cars, this seems to me like they either weren't bothered to design something totally unique or their other designs were so bad they were abandoned.

Chevrolet, Aston Martin, Nissan, BMW and Mercedes' cars are to me what VGT is all about. Designing something from scratch and having no limits to what you want to design.

I'd have to say, much as I like it, the BMW VGT was not original.. it's a hoped up 2 series which shows some design details of the forth-coming M2. Mercedes as well used their VGT to preview the shape of the AMG GT, although they were quite a bit more extravagant with the details than BMW were.

That's a great example of VGT!
It looks ugly to me and I still prefer classic designs, but hey, this is pure awesomeness!
And yeah, thrust vectoring + laser engine...this thing is a fighter jet on wheels.
I have had to say this a hundred times today, but the 2J was ugly, and it is a classic design. But oh well, i personally think it looks great, and i agree that the car itself is pure awesomeness!

I've just realised, we have a bunch of people moaning (quite rightly) that we haven't seen much in the way of creativity from some manufacturers, and then we get a design with some ingenuity... and they don't like it because it's too crazy? What exactly would they like from a VGT then?

Obviously somewhere in between :)

Well, there's only so far you can go with a concept car before it becomes completely absurd. It's a very, very fine balance to strike.
I agree, but isn't the Vision GT program supposed to more than just concept cars? Isn't the whole idea of the program to push the boundaries further than any regular old concept car program can? That's always been my impression...

Me too... which brings me back to my original post.

That is a good point about the BMW.

As for the Mercedes, the main point is that they used the VGT to influence the AMG GT rather than the other way around.

I think the Mercedes is one of the only ones to strike a great balance between outright insanity and beauty.

Yes, that is interesting. Merc was the first car to be unveiled and yet it is also the most realistic unrealistic car of all the VGT cars. Sure, BMW's looks even more realistic, but we know (despite BMW not telling us outright) that it is a buffed up 2-Series made to be a race car of sorts.

With the Merc, you can't tell that the car takes something after a car of the Mercedes range. You could say it has a bit of SLR with a dash of future AMG GT, but it's not that clear. The Merc looks futuristic and yet also manages to look somewhat realistic, while being unique.

Am I the only one who can't wait to see how the HXT laser engine behaves? How will it sound? Where will the "power band" be? Will it burn other cars?

Chevrolet has just revealed their full scale model of the Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo Concept during their press conference at the LA Auto Show! For full details on the car and more follow this link:http://bit.ly/ChapVGTwrld"

On the Gran Turismo Website:

"On the 19th of November, in advance of the US Los Angeles Auto Show, Chevrolet has unveiled the full scale model of its Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo. The car which goes far beyond the boundaries of modern day automobiles will appear in the PlayStation®3-exclusive software "Gran Turismo 6" in an update planned for the holiday season, where players around the world can experience the unique drive feel of this revolutionary car.

Chaparral has produced ground breaking racing cars that have revolutionised motorsports. The Texas based company had formed a partnership with Chevrolet Research and Development more than 45 years ago, pioneering now-standard methods and materials used in contemporary racing and production vehicles. In addition to things like composite monocoque chassis, lightweight-alloy powertrain systems, automatic transmissions for racing and progressive, active aerodynamics, the partnership also spawned ground-breaking telemetry vehicle data acquisition technology. Chevrolet continues to use racing programs to test and develop new technologies and materials.

The highlight of the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo which inherits this spirit of revolution, is in its styling and powertrain. The power supply selected for this car is a unprecedented laser propulsion system. The laser beam unit mounted central to the car produces a laser beam pulse which strikes a focusing shroud, and the resulting shockwave produces the thrust which propels this extremely light racing car. With a 671 kW laser and air powered generator, this car rises to a top speed of 384 km/h(240 mph and accelerates from 0-60 mph in 1.5 seconds.

This unprecedented drive unit is also closely associated with the unique driver position in the car. The driver almost lays completely flat towards the front, with all four of his appendages spread out towards the wheels when driving this car. The laser propulsion system and the suspension unit is laid out to match this driver position, and enables the futuristic active aerodynamics control.

Because the aerodynamics of this car can be controlled in the direction of the shockwave released, it does not require a large rear wing. as a result the body of the Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo was possible to make extremely light. The information display system of the car itself is also minimal; instrument displays of the car is directly projected inside the driver's helmet visor.

“The Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo is an audacious and ambitious vision – and one that demonstrates to a new audience how Chevy’s engineering and design teams challenge norms and explore the technologies of tomorrow,” said Clay Dean, Executive Director of advanced design. “It also an ode to a unique partnership that pioneered ground-breaking technologies that are in used today, on the track and the street.”

Meanwhile, Frank Saucedo who oversaw the team that worked on the concept said this about the car: “It was created in a no-rules atmosphere to challenge designers and test engineers to deliver the most exhilarating sensations. Like the original Chaparral race cars decades ago, the Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo weaves advanced aerospace technologies into the design to help achieve its incredible performance. Think of it as a fusion of a wing suit gliding through the skies with a racing car. As a pilot controls the membrane between his hands and feet in a wing suit, the driver controls the aerodynamics of this car. In all respects, the Chaparral 2X is a "Racing Wingsuit” that flies barely above the ground.

The full scale model of the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo will be on displayed at the Los Angeles Auto Show held at the LA Convention centre until the 30th of November."

This is not a project car... IT'S A U.F.O!!! :P

The first thing I thought of when I saw this car was "Ridge Racer". It looks freakin' cool and I can't wait to get behind the wheel. 👍

Excactly.

Overall I think this is pretty awesome. I've watched the video a few times now and still can't figure out how the driver actually fits in the thing though. Her legs seem to go either side of the engine then just disappear! I know it's just a concept car but the driver should still fit in somewhere!

The 2J is a big refrigerator with two giant fans and that's why it's so special, it's unique design...!

Totally agree, that's the real purpose of the VGT project, this one is great because it has PERSONALITY, caps lock needed.
I'm in love with most of classic cars but crazy futuristic concepts, like this one, are great.

p.s. dat Delta S4... :sly:

In this "car" there's no even place for human legs, wait, looking at the design seems like there's no place for humans at all.

At least Redbull X2010 had a place for human, even if the performance would have kill'd the driver for excessive G-force stress.
