Curtis, you follow your dream everytime. I sold up everything and moved to the US, with no plan and nothing but a pocket full of money, because it was a dream of mine. GO for it everytime ... why live in a constant question of "what if????"

Hey Kart,

Where abouts are you in R.S.A. ? Who's your sponsor ? I also did a bit of investigation into getting into racing here in S.A. , and all roads lead to karts, but one has to start at like 15 or something if you would want to really make it one day into the bigger leagues of single seaters etc. Or one has to have a crapload of money to just do it as a hobby ... I've heard of a few older guys (40's), who take part in single seater racing, cars with Golf 2.0l engines ?

I am sponsored by the official importers of the PCR Chassis in S.A.

Regarding costs to start karting, it all depends on what class you want to start in and how much you willing to spend on a new/used kart.

Some good used karts with Rotax engines can go for R20 000 ($3 000 +/-). The latest craze is the RM1 class which involves a direct drive engine and paddle shift geabox (really cool!) but they go for R60 000 new ($9 000 +/-).

I started racing when I was 15 and haven't had the oppurtunities to move up in the racing catagories, it is so hard I can't even begin to tell you. BTW, the youngest people that I know are racing are 3 and 4yrs old.

The single seaters you are talking about is called Formula GTi, they don't exist in Cape Town but are popular in Johannesburg at a regional level, as far as I know that class is mega expensive though!

To get into single seater you need lotsa money, doesn't matter how good you are. You will somewhere along the line be required to chip in to help with the budget for the team you want to race for.

The guy racing in A1 for S.A payed $300 000 for ONE year in Formula Renault in England. That was just for ONE year, he did 3!! And from what I hear and have seen he aint that great either (he lives 1minute away from me and used to use my kart in the pre season)... So if you got the dollar then you got a chance.

So in the end karting is actually quite affordable in racing terms, but then again the racing world does live in a bubble 👎

Karting is probably the only way you can get into motor racing with the intention of becoming a professional. If you can scrape together enough cash to buy yourself a kart and run it for a season. Then whether or not you do well enough to attract sponsorship and move up through the ranks or just keep on competing for the hell of it - you will still enjoy it just as much and satisfy any 'being a racing driver' ambitions.

You've got to remember that there's probably less than 500 people in the entire world that make a living from being a professional racing driver.

I'm still sort of new around here so excuse me for butting into the conversation. Is this user VeilsideBR saying he wants to end his life because he can't be an F1 racer?? That really is sad because it is not exactly a job that's easy to get. I can understand if you can't get a job at a local convenience store, but to kill yourself because you can't get a job that only .00000001 percent of the world's population have seems silly. Could it be that this user is just lonely and looking for some attention?? Sorry if that sounded rude but I am just trying to make some sense of it.

no, my problem really is not about being lonely and/or looking for some atention, sorry.

i think suicide is really not the rights solution
you want to be a race driver, and you have tried to become that. when you´re dead, you would´nt be a race driver too. so you have to try continuing and harder, because if you are really fast, somebody will be interested in you. try to make something out of your life, and remember your friends and family. don´t do that to them

but then again the racing world does live in a bubble 👎

And that says it all right there.

It's like the old joke;

Question: How do you make a million dollars in racing?
Answer: Spend 10 million.

The sad thing is that racing has become so much about money even in the amateur ranks, that a regular Joe hasn't got a chance. The SCCA here in the U.S. used to be great. A guy could get a good car for any number of great classes with very little money, run 8-10 regional races per year for a couple hundred bucks a weekend, and if he had some savvy and skill, be very competitive.
Now it's all about money and sponsorship. There is so much technology available, that if you don't use it, you are miles behind. And you can't afford the technology without sponsorship........(or a silver spoon), so it's a two edged sword. :indiff:

But even with that, the truth is that racing is damn hard work! Forget about family, friends, or any other interests, because it sucks up all your time, money, and energy. If you want to get noticed, and move up, your whole life has to be devoted to it. Even then it's a crap shoot.

For me, GT4 is a lovely way to cheat the system, and race on the cheap! :)

The thing is that he hasn't tried much...

There is a Hella lot of pain in Suicide, my best mate in the nineties, both himself and his brother committed suicide within two years of each other at the turn of the century.
Their methods were entirely different, altough theyboth involved fast heavy transports, but their motivation was identical & hardcore, they never blabbed about it firstly, they never got anyone else involved in the event itself, they're at peace now.
Yessir, there's many a reason to off oneself, but prima donna is'nt one.

Hey veil!

Come to Australia and I'll get you started in rallying. I have a Subaru I could lend to you for perhaps a local event here, just to see if you're as good as you think.

Chris Atkinson (current WRC factory driver) started rallying in 2001, at the age of 22. 4 years later he was a professional rally driver on the world stage.

And to think I used to rally against him...

wow, are you serious? 💡

Do you think it would be easier to start in rally than in karting?

Do it, Veil.

Seriously!

What do you have to loose?

Maybe get some of the respect I had for you back, hate so see a wasted talent!
That is, if regaining some respect back off someone who you have never really talked to, means anything?

Neil

Rallye is very easy to start in, theres pretty much a class for every kind of car, you just need the proper saftey equpiment!

yes indeed, i really care to what people think about me, losing the respect is always a ****. And its even worse when i don´t find a chance even looking for it at all the places.

Come on now, won't you give the excuse you don't have enough money to get to Austrialia?

And if you are good in computers like you say, and i know your english is good enough from msn voice conversations, you can get a job earning some good money fixing/maintaining computers. 👍 Plenty of work in that area.

So you think i can adapt quite easily? yes i work good with computers, many jobs overthere so? :)

I would REALLY like to move to australia to work and save for a race car, seems easier than here at brazil. :indiff:

As long as you are motivated enough and not scared to go looking around, i dont see why you wouldnt be able to find a job. Pretty big demand for that type of thing.

Cool, thats nice. So i can earn good and save for a race car lol. :sly:

I will see what i can do about going to australia. 👍

yeah, good to see u've come to ur senses Veil, but i always knew u would never actually suicide, no matter how much u said u were gonna.

if u do move to Australia, we should catch up, go to a night club or something lol.

I still can't understand why a nitwit like Veil can have a public forum to post the most disgusting and undermining things possible to get noticed. If something should be filtered, then it should be the lower than low standards he stands for.

But it's far easier to shoot the messenger. The mod's attacks on Max were totally uncalled for.

***political opinions edited by mod***

And it's that very same political correctness that i dispise so much. Tons of respect for Max E and mr P for standing firm in their believes.
