CLASSIC RACING Sundays 17:00-19:00 GMT: "Ford Ferrari Wars" LEX CHAMP by 1 Point!Finished

Sick
I'm very sorry but I cannot attend this Sunday or next Sunday. :guilty:

This is due to family commitments as well as start of half term holidays.

I'll let you know about 26/10 nearer the time. I'm happy for you to put me onto the reserve list for now. Thanks

Stay as a permanent Driver for now.

Attention Reserve Drivers! - There will be some empty grid slots available for next Sundays races - they will go to whichever Reserve Drivers contact me first.

I have amended the track list at the start of the thread and also the driver / car list to reflect recent changes - the latter is reproduced here for information. Note that we change cars after next Sundays round.

Car & Driver Poster 170914.jpg

Drivers in black ink are Permanent Drivers.
Drivers in red ink are Reserve Drivers.
Drivers in blue ink have either left the series or are currently taking a break.

My problem is that I don't practice as much as I used to. I've got involved in other various clubs and series (see signature - all recommended) , so my limited abilities get watered down even further. Sunday comes and I really just "jump in" the cars and try and remember how they handle. A few laps in I'm usually getting to grips with them again. So my chances of grid spots are somewhat limited. Especially with the classy drivers we have now.

Well onto the races...

The BSCC - I can't remember to much about it. According to Tony's chart I started, passed a couple of cars and finished. I'm sure there was more to it than that. I'll have to watch the replay.

FFW's - Again I didn't set a qualifying time since the 2D's slow acceleration means that it gets passed easily at the start. Sick dropped 7 positions. If I'd been besides him there would have been a pile up behind us! So I started at the back and picked my way through. Until I reached the category 2 battle mentioned by Flaco! And he's right it was quite a fight. There were 3 of them initially swapping places. This was whittled down to 2 by the intervention of a certain Ferrari ;). But even this didn't help me, I couldn't get passed them. The 2D could easily catch up with them towards the end of the straights, but then a slow speed corner would be upon us and with the 2D's lack of low speed grunt, they would accelerate away into the distance again. This sequence continued. I could have made a lunge but I didn't want to spoil their fight. So I sat back and watched.👍 (I didn't expect you to let me pass - it was up to me to get by)
I'm sure the 2D will be good at Sarthe - but I won't be in it then! Well done to Sick for his high position in it.

The Catterham's - I started mid pack and quickly found myself in second behind Flaco! I kept good pace with him for the first lap but when leaving the last chicane my tyre spun up on the rumble strip (!) and the car pirouetted around. I sat and watched most of the following pack pass by. Somewhat disheartened I rejoined and worked my way back up to the mid pack position I started in.

Anyway good racing everyone.

Great pictures Tony and Whisper.
And I'm also liking your JS trophy Tony - I'm winning the FFW! (although it's slightly skewed due to my lack of qualifying - so far)

Note: Sick, I'm thinking of giving the Nordschleife a miss. I seem to have been around it lots recently and as you know it's not my favourite. I'll get back to you.
Practice? What's that?

Despite my good intentions, I usually find myself trying to wake up an hour early before race time to try the track/car combos, and adjust gearing. After searching for caffeine, I usually arrive on thr track 20-30 minutes early. It takes everything I have just to run a clean lap in qualifiers. Once the race begins, I'm off the track several times because I hadn't figured out the braking points, etc. Usually, it doesn't matter because the technical glitches mess things ip anyway.

But last Sunday was fun! In the first two races, my goal was to stay on the track--not to drive fast. As it turns out, that wasn't the worst strategy! When Sick passed me in his Chapparal,

Edit: Wow, I didn't know this was posted! My phone crashed while typing, so I said "screw it" and went to do something else. Oh well.

I can race Sunday, Sick_Cylinder:)

Has anyone got a good tune for Mini and Lotus 7.

That's good to hear John - you are the first to respond. There are still a few other vacant slots for Sunday for Reserve Drivers.

For the Caterham 7 I use race soft suspension and all the other upgrades including supercharger. Racing brakes 7/4, custom differential 10/25/15. I'll send you my Mini tune later as I can't remember it. Don't forget to give them oil changes. I give my Sunday cars an oil change before each race - the Chaparral maxes out at 420bhp, but last Sunday it suddenly jumped to 440bhp! and went from 606pp to 614pp!

I notice that it has become fashionable to deny doing any practise - the racing equivalent of "Do you work out or were you just made this way?"

If you want extra track practise like IfAndOr try Fergus Mik's Minis and Smiley's Pre 73 meetings as they normally do a couple of races at the track that we use the following Sunday. Unfortunately I have had to stop doing those (or any other late evening races) because of side effects from my medication (Statins).

I try to use my cars in events in the game - to earn some extra credits. There is a championship for 650PP cars and I've enjoyed using the Renault and Caterham for that. You can also use the classics in the Seasonal events - I used Cobras in the current beginner, intermediate and advanced challenges. I would play the game much more if there was an event creator, but most days I log on to keep my bonus, but don't actually use the game.

Thanks very much for help Sick_Cylinder, will give that a try:D

Will get some practice with Cobras:tup:

I don't deny practicing, but I rarely drive these cars on these tracks before the morning of the race. This is probably because I am used to having times set by other drivers that I need to chase. I do seasonals and occasional WRS time trials.

I am easily bored and frustrated trying to beat my own times in these classic cars. I should probably get out of the TT mentality, and just concentrate on putting in 20 laps with the goal being to learn the car and stay on the track. I'm learning there are no re-starts in 20-minute races ;)

The comment was not meant as a criticism in any way - I know that many people have limited time. I think IfAndOr should try qualifying this week - probably start 3rd or 4th on the grid lose a lot of places, but the Chaparral is so slow at the start that it seems pretty easy for the following traffic to avoid as they know that it and the Ford Mark 4 are slow off the line. We are using the 24H track this Sunday so there should be time for the Prototypes to get back ahead of the Category 2 cars before the old track starts.

Good luck to one and all - I hope we have a good turnout - if any Reserve Drivers want to race please let me know - John Wells will be racing, but I have not heard from any of the other reserves.

Car of the Week - Jaguar E Type Factory Lightweight 1963-64
Finally here's a car that deserves your support and should definitely have more votes. Jaguar produced 12 Lightweight E Types for racing to compete with Ferraris, Cobra 289's and Aston Martin DB4GT's. It was originally planned to manufacture 18 and recently Jaguar announced that their Heritage centre would produce the final 6 cars in 2014 exactly as per the original blueprints. I believe they are $1m each, but only for sale to historic Jaguar racers with existing Jaguar collections so unfortunately that counts most of us out!

We will miss you! Incredible time on the 550PP Seasonal Time Trial at Matterhorn Suts - you are currently the fastest on my friends list!

For people looking to get extra practise in their classic collection. I found I could get Bronze in the Renault 8, Silver in the Cobra Daytona Coupe and an easy first lap gold in the Chaparral 2J - the other two cars, especially the Renault 8 I had to work hard for the time.

Thanks sick.
I was chasing whistlers time with a maclaren F1 GTR race car but couldn't beat him. So I changed to the chapperal 2J and it just came. First time I've ever got such a fast time?!?
I think it'll be fun trying it with the FFW and BSCC cars.
Be back in 2 weeks.

Good racing tonight. Even if I still can't drive the Green Hell. In all the excitement I forgot to save the replay of the BSCC race so can someone PM the qualifying and results please or work out the Jack Sears points for that race. Thanks :)

Good races everyone. I'm gonna miss driving the Cobra... at first I didn't really like it cause it was a bit... wild. Also, I think it's the only car with normal brakes while all the others got racing brakes, so that was sorta annoying haha. The thing I hate MOST about it though, is the limiter. Stock, it will only go up to 259 km/h.. it was especially annoying in today's race at the long straight before the finish line . Anyway, despite all that I grew to really like it in the last 3 weeks, so I'm gonna miss driving it! However, I'll just be driving another sort of Cobra next week :P. Wasn't really a huge fan of the Mini cause smoke is always coming out of the tyres due to the understeer, but it wasn't bad by all means.

Really looking forward to next week to try out the other cars.

It is quite realistic that the Cobra is very limited on top speed as the real car had very poor aerodynamics. At Le Mans in 1963 the class winning Sanderson Bolton Cobra 289 did 161-163mph down the Mulsanne straight with a fastback hardtop. In 1964 it was about 10mph slower as Fraissinet Mortemart used a standard hardtop. The figures quoted for Cobras in the USA are normally much higher as with more relaxed regulations they raced with either single screens, cut down screens or no windscreens at all.

It was very entertaining to follow you for a bit in the Chaparral - that car is equally frustrating - so slow off the line - qualified 3rd, dropped back through the field and a minute behind the leader by the time I got back through to 3rd.

A good meeting and I'm looking forward to the next cars.

Too bad I missed the first two races. I got home this evening from the actual Nürburgring, where I was watching this Saturdays VLN race. I wanted to go on the track in my car, the track was open for public "Touristenfahrten" from 10a.m. today. Unfortunately I was very drunk last night so I didn´t feel good in the morning and canceled my plans. When I came home, after 2.5 hrs drive, I was exhausted and fell asleep. Well, at least I made it for the 7s race, eventually with a lucky win since Rehdogg and Smiley had very good pace, but both then had a few mistakes out on the Nordschleife.

Looking forward on the results tables, Sick. And also to next rounds in new cars.

Hey Sick
Could you add me to the Reserve drivers list for now.
I'm currently having a really busy time period and just cant make it to the race meetings on time.
I hope it will change in a month or two, i'll let you know when i'll get things sorted.
Its been absolutely fantastic to race with you all , hope to be back on the grid soon. :)

Will do - it's been great racing with you!

Next Race - Ford Ferrari Wars will be at La Sarthe 2005 No Chicanes.

The Support Races - Historic BSCC and Caterham Cup will be at Trial Mountain.

Remember to change cars before the meeting - the car choices are on page 1 in the first post.

No chicanes! Darn it, the 2D would have been in its element there. :grumpy:

Are you planing on running the support races together, before changing tracks? (Or visa versa)
Or is it as normal?

As normal.

I think you have returned the keys to your beloved Chaparral 2D and Jim Hall has now passed them on to SmileyWRX - he told him to get a win or he'll be coming out of retirement to show us how it's done!

IfAndOr - you are now in the Chromeline Cobra (Mountain Green) which is very fast in a straight line so should be ok at La Sarthe. (Mountain Green, Number type C font A, wheels PDI P525N painted silver).

Beloved isn't probably the word I'd use. ;)

Actually it wasn't bad, I just couldn't get to grips with the low speed performance. All credit to you for getting the high places you had. 👍

If the gearbox was able to be adjusted I think it would have made a whole lot of difference.
The real one's were that low geared?

That is why I fell PD should divide tuning by three, Power, Suspension, Transmission.
Early on Sick you had suggested that we drive the cars as they were meant to be, which I support, however in a real racing situation suspension and gearing were obviously changed per track.
At the same time the 2d probably would be so fast that it would have been classed out of this series.

Sorry won't beable to make it this Sunday:boggled:

Final of British Superbikes, so will be watching that, all weekend:D

Thanks see you all the week after:tup:

Went to Oulton Park to,in August for one of rounds:D Excellent weekend:)
