CNET.com Poll: Forza 3 vs. Gran Turismo 5

And on GT5P being arcadish. If you have ever tried a real racing sim, such as iRacing, Live For Speed, GTR, rFactor or Nascar Racing 2003, you'll understand what I mean.

I have and I still don't know what you mean. iracing simulates a bottoming out better (low cars riding high curbs don't mix!) which makes it a little harsher when you are not careful but iracing has plenty of issues itself, like the fact I have a clutch but I don't even need to use it and thats with autoclutch off, among other things (tyres).

Overall I can jump between GT5P and iracing with barely any adjust time, they feel similar to me.

I wont beother going into the others but I have played all but rFactor for long periods of time (couldn't be bothered with the mod aspect of rFactor but I did play the base software)

Good topic, I think you summed up what had to be said well.

One thing I noticed on that forum though is that a load of the fanboys over there seem to think that 'GT5's physics don't even come close to forzas'... I'm sorry, but I've played forza 2 many times and compared to GT5 it felt very arcadey, and I'm sure many would agree with me here.

And a lot of them also claim that Forzas physics are better because 'In the GT series you can crash into a wall at 200mph without getting a scratch', but that argument doesn't have any logic to it because in forza, which has actually tried to implement damage, you can ram into a wall at 200mph and only get a mild dent??? That to me doesn't sound very realistic either!?!

I dont know why im even arguing about this, since its a joke to even consider forza being better than GT5, but i have read so much crap that i had to see for myself.

And i just watched some Forza 3 in game videos -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0tua3wjWq8&feature=related

This one for example, now i have to admit forza has announced some pretty cool features. But the one reason GT is so good is the physics!

This video clearly shows how crap the physics are, they are miles off GT, and the engine sounds are terrible! GT5's car sounds are spot on i think, take the tuned lotus 111r for a burn, it doesn't get much more raw than that!

Even if GT5 was released with no damage, no customisation, no night time effects, no weather effects, no WRC, no nascar, i would STILL rather play GT5. It's the physics that are the most important thing!!

Im reading so much trash talking about GT5 that i started to beleive that maybe forza was better, but after watching that video...

what a joke, they are not even in the same category. Turn 10 you have failed.

Now, I don't know if you've played forza 2 before but I can tell you that Forza 2 has way better engine noise than Gran Turismo. But the rest of your post I agree, especially the physics. for me Forza 2 physics was like PGR 3 but a little bit more complicated, that's it.

Well, of course the driving itself in GT5P is perhaps one of the best, but other things are not.

The fact that everything is automaticly done is not very sim like. The start for example has always been a countdown, 3... 2... 1... GO! And you're not able to make a false start. How realistic is that?

Also, as we talked about in another thread, the pit has always been done automaticly. But as you said, that's hard to make realistic in a console game.

Then there is the HUD, which should be fully customizable. Especially now when we have interior view. You should be able to remove map, remove indicators of any sort, remove the driver and steering wheel or driver only, and so on.

What's more, is that since we'll now have damage in GT5, they should implement real racing rules and flags (red, green, yellow and black). There are more flags as well. In my opinion it would be awesome if everyone was included in GT5, but that will never happen.

Every flag used in racing world wide (from wikipedia):

To be honest with you (The last poster) GT5 Prologue is as good as a sim I want, it should be nothing like Rfactor etc, and thank god for that simply because its not like GTR constant rehashing.

Whilst I agree about the respect thing, you are doing Forza a great diservice with those videos. The Forza video appears to be taken with some sort of video camera and not representative of what you'd actually see in reality (the image is filtered through the crappy camera). Also, the GT5P video seems to have less jaggies on the shadows on the in car camera, which are usually quite noticable.

Are there any properly captured vids for the in game, in car camera in Forza 3? Most seem to be taken with a video camera, which makes it look hideous.

Ok yeah I get what you mean now 👍

Im afraid I was short of time and you wouldn't believe how many youtube videos of GT5P their is. Many are recorded via a digital camera and are alot worse quality than the ones I posted.

As for Dec 9th release im afraid I got my dates mixed up. I strongly suspect we shall see GT5 released in Dec and the dates im going for is either Dec 4th or Dec 11th, both fall on a friday.

From the videos I don't like the car modeling in Forza... the R8 in the last one is really strangely shaped for me. And that's all I can compare, since I only have GT's and PS's. But it's a turn off for me.

One of the biggest mistakes people make

"Turn 10 created in 2 years what took Polyphony Digital 4 years to make."

Wrong, it took turn 10 the same amount of time to create detailed cockpits for every car and graphics that didn't look last gen. Forza 2 was more like Forza 1.5, and Forza 3 is more like Forza 2. lol, what are they going to say when GT5 launches with 600 cars and 96 tracks. And according to amar, and even hinted by KAZ, the game has been done since March and they're just waiting for the opportune time to release it.

Why is Forza 3 even remotely interesting to those who have played past GT games and know what to expect with the next? What does Forza have over GT5, at least so far? A custom livery editor? PD has always wanted to implement that. Porsche and Lamborghini? Need For Speed has always had those so should I give shift a look? And that's about it.

The biggest thing Gran Turismo has over Forza is Kazunori Yamauchi. While the actual racing aspect of GT has a ways to go, (damage, flags, better pits etc) KY's passion for cars shows in his games. He has always kept GT classy, made the cars as perfect looking as possible on the hardware, steadily tweaked and improved the physics over 10 years, and included races and tracks like lemans and the nurburgring not because that was the next step, but because he had a passion for these. Look how Gran Turismo heavily sponsors the Nurburgring 24 every year and most years sponsors a Henri Pescarolo car for the lemans 24.

And again, yes, PD has a ways to go before they get the GT series to PC like sim quality, but in my opinion they are already halfway there with the car models and physics. Adding day/night changes will be another huge step towards that. As would simple things like the ability to remove the HUD and manual control of standing starts and pit stops just to name a few things

Just a little irritating to me that Turn 10 comes in, examines GT, adds what the GT series does not have, (damage, livery editor, porsche, lamborghini) then claims the GT series has been stagnate while they've innovated.

I took a look at Forza 2's nurburgring the other day, and it looked smoother then Indianapolis. And thats saying something.

NASCAR alone will ensure GT5 kills Forza 2 in the sales department. If the United States picks up their end of the bargain and returns to GT3 like sales numbers with the help of NASCAR I expect 8-10 million copies of GT5 to be sold

In the end GT5 should beat Forza 3 pretty easily, unless your hung up over porsche and lamborghini or you just have to give that ferrari a neon green paint scheme.

But as I said earlier, Turn 10, Microsoft and cnet got what they wanted, us talking about Forza 3 instead of the clearly superior GT5.

Not that this poll actually means anything (especially to me as I'll be getting both games and will probably enjoy them both just as much) but I thought it interesting that Che (One of Forza III's Devs) has gone on the Forza forums posted a link to the same poll and offered free unicorn cars to all those who vote for Forza III !

http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/forums/21/2632637/ShowThread.aspx

I've gone and registered my non vote as I think that this kind of thing is only fuelling a pathetic fanboy war that doesn't need to exist and now T10 are trying to rig a meaningless poll by using bribes.

No way, that's a little bit sad really.

I would only vote after playing both anyway.

Well said mate. 👍

Just posted this as a comment to the poll:
Some of you have not read a certain thread in the Forza forums, wherein many people actually admit to voting for Forza solely because they wanted the Unicorn car. Certainly that makes the poll void? Of course, if GT still manages to win (and it's catching up) then it just goes to show that bribery and lies are not enough to turn these things in your favor. By the way, if you voted for Forza just for the prize, feel free to post a comment. You haven't done anything wrong for wanting it, but I hear you can claim the prize without actually voting for Forza. (I may be wrong)

Considering this forum is founded upon a love for GRAN TURISMO, you as a member of this GRAN TURISMO forum are (IMO) obligated to vote for GRAN TURISMO. If you are a supporter of the other console's knock-offs, then go to the Forza4life.com boards please.

It's obvious GT is better than Forza. Why else would the XBOX Forza forums be BRIBING members to go vote by giving them a "unicorn". Oh how cute. Just about as cute as the "dancing cars" BS.

It's obvious GT is superior. GTMobile is better than Fartza 3!

The simple way to put an end to all the speculation is:

RELEASE THE GAME!

Nobody (not even Dan G) is questioning what KY has achieved in the past, but it's been a very long time since the release of GT4. The wait has become agonizing. The idea that GT5 might actually be ready, but being held back for some unspecified reason, is cruel...
