College Football 2011 Season

LSU and Alabama played to a defensive struggle. The score is more like an offensive baseball game than a football game. It was #1 LSU winning 9-6 in Overtime at #2 Alabama.

It was quite a defensive struggle; had it not been 1-2 in the polls, I would have ignored the second half. LSU looked good at times, and couldn't really complete any serious drives...but Alabama made a number of dumb plays (sure, put an injured, limping kick returner on the field!) and missing three kicks meant they kind of coughed that one up. That late interception really could have gone either way, to be honest, seemed LSU just wrestled it away at the last millisecond.

Couldn't help but feel that Australia ought to be proud that two players from her nation was represented in quite a college football matchup...ever happened before?

Amazingly, Alabama's loss drops them only to #3?!? I know the BCS is occasionally flawed by +/- one place, but Alabama's coaching just seemed to want to lose this one.

Maybe the LSU at Alabama game should have had "Advance Australia Fair" play before the game, eh? One of the real disturbing stories of late has been all the different recent allegations regarding (if I understand correctly) child sex abuse by a former Penn State defensive coordinator. Joe Paterno is expected to speak tomorrow about this deal and may step down from the program if this gets ugly. JoePa isn't targeted in this deal in any such way.

Well... scratch the news conference. Penn State canceled JoePa's news conference for today. It will be a very sketchy time for Penn State in trying to resolve this matter as best as they can.

Damn

Let's see what the Big Ten Network has to say about Joe Pa. ( LINK )

Sheeez, I'm going to miss Joe Paterno. It's not looking good for him.None the less, a brilliant career. 👍

Ok so, why the hell are people actually feeling sorry for him, or missing him or even speaking a nice word about him? How he stood by and let these incidents of abuse go unreported (to the proper authorities) and unpunished is as if he committed them himself. Isn't failure to report a felony crime a crime in itself? I'm tired of people getting a free ride just because they are associated with a sports team.

---------------

Now on to some football, which is infinitely more important that the Paterno circus. :D

We've got some good matchups this weekend!

TCU vs Boise State <-- Go Frogs!
Georgia vs Auburn <-- Always a very good game. Pulling for Auburn here.
Tennessee vs Arkansas <-- Tennessee could give the Razorbacks a hard time. I look for an upset...slim...
Oregon vs Stanford <-- Someone's gotta fall here! Go Ducks.
Texas Tech vs Oklahoma State <-- TTU should give them a good offensive run for their money. Put me down for Tech.
Florida vs South Carolina <-- Florida might play them tough this week. Give me Florida, in OT. :sly:

And of course the only one I am really interested in...GUESS WHICH?! I see us bouncing back in a big way this weekend and giving Kansas another loss. :D Gray should run for a billion zillion yards. Our rushing defense is pretty good, which matches up against the Kansas strong point--rushing. Kansas cannot pass the ball to save their life, and that will be a huge opportunity for our defense to get some turnovers along with some 3-in-outs. We have a pretty good ranked offense so scoring won't be the issue--it is the mistakes that have killed us in all 4 losses this year. Untimely penalties and interceptions in other words. Reduce or eliminate these mistakes and we are a sure thing.

I also look for Houston to score over 70 again this time against Tulane. They (Univ. Houston) play SMU and then Tulsa to finish the season. I look for them to be undefeated and of course be overlooked for any serious bowl considerations like Boise and TCU have been recently. I'll need to pickup some U of H gear since my brother is going back to school there for his Ph.D. :D

It is astonishing to try to wrap your head around the whole Penn State deal as well as the fact that Joe Paterno will have to retire from coaching due to circumstances beyond his control. Just crazy.

By the way, I heard Western Michigan at Toledo ended up being a 66-63 shootout that Toledo won. Hell, why don't my beloved Houston Cougars play Toledo in a basketball-on-grass shootout?

Isn't failure to report a felony crime a crime in itself?

From what I heard he reported it to the AD, who did nothing. Basically he did the bare minimum to not get charged.

Really feel bad for the victims, as well as current, past and future students as Penn State will now be associated with this for a long time to come.

------

In other (non)news, the Gophers still suck. Why the hell did they give Kill an extension?

Minnesota is getting better. And I'm sure you've all heard, but Paterno has just been let go. Tom Bradley, the defensive coordinator (irony?) will take over on Saturday.

Joe Pa is an embarrassment. I don't know how any organization could harbor a child molester like that. Nittany Pedobears.

Because he has epilepsy?

Was that sarcasm? All he didn't do was turn Sandusky in the correct way. He turned it in to the AD, but the AD didn't get anything to law enforcement. Yes, Joe could have done more, but his job normally would have been to turn wrongdoing in to his superiors. Joe Paterno was one of my greatest role models growing up and playing sports, and seeing him come outside last night to address the throng of students made me cry. I still think, no matter what anyone else says, that he was as close to what a good person should be in life and in sports and I'm devastated. I'm sad that he will be remembered for one mistake that wasn't entirely his fault.

This is still just a sad story from top to bottom. We're forgetting that games like Oregon at Stanford is coming up this weekend. The Penn State issues just really rocked this college football week.

You know what, lets talk about the game itself and not give this subject any more of our valuable time. :D 👍 If this thread starts to get bloated with this topic I'll vomit.

Good idea. My 4-5 Pirates have a matchup with the Miners of Texas-El Paso down in Texas on Saturday. We only have 3 games left, so Ruffin and the Pirates better jump on their high horse if they want to reach their 6th straight bowl game. I'm also excited to see the Stanford-Oregon game. Show 'em what us intellectuals can do, go Cardinal! 👍

It's going to be tough for Penn State to focus this weekend with their game at home against Nebraska. Let me ask, though... what would a win over Nebraska on Saturday do for Penn State even in the wake of all this insanity? Do you think it would help suppress some of the turmoil that has happened as sports just get back to normal?

My #11 Houston Cougars will be at Tulane tonight. There is also Ohio at Central Michigan as well. The big game tonight is a Tech-nical battle with Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech. Enjoy your college football this weekend, even with the news domination of Penn State.

Prediction alert!
Houston 74 Tulane 10

:D

Where's a good place to get some U of H stuff John? My brother should enroll next spring to get his Ph.D. They don't sell that stuff up here...just some burnt orange UT junk, TCU/SMU and my Aggie stuff.

\/This was the final...
Houston-73
Tulane-17

Next Friday Ames will have a blizzard, making Iowa State beat Okie State... Too bad I'll be at Lucas Oil Stadium for NCYC*.

*National Catholic Youth Conference

I think if Houston wants a BCS Bowl, they will have to hope that Boise State loses or something while Houston wins out. Not likely to happen, but all the Houston Cougars can do- just win, baby!

There is some college football going on right now as South Florida is at Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. Enjoy your college football weekend!

If Houston wins out, they should be the other bubble team (with Boise) to get in a BCS game in my opinion.

Damn, I was close on the score! But, I did however predict another 70+ point outcome.

How does Boise find a way to throw it away every year.. God, I'm so mad right now, if Boise tanks there will never be a fair system in football.

"Like, OMG!" Yes... the unthinkable from my previous post happened today. Did you hear that loud noise in Idaho? Yeah- that's the sound of #5 Boise State falling hard at home, losing 36-35 to unranked TCU. I can't remember the last time Boise State lost at home. However, the Broncos fell hard. Now Houston has their absolute BEST chance to be a BCS buster. All they have to do is win out, and they may be playing in a BCS Bowl Game.

I was pulling for Penn State, but they fell 17-14 against Nebraska. The Nittany Lions did their best.

Congratulations to all winning teams, and tough luck for all losers up to and beyond the date of this post. Got to love college football, folks!

God damn it. I'm tired of my team blowing leads late in these games to lose. 4 of the 5 losses we basically threw away. I'm taking down my avatar.

:grumpy:

I feel your pain, brother :(.

Yep, pretty horrid day for me football-wise. ECU lost, Boise lost, Duke lost, and Stanford can't get it together. ECU has to beat UCF and Marshall to even get bowl eligible, which is a long shot with our newfound dirt-poor level of play.

More highlights/notes:

* Colorado FINALLY wins their first Pac-12 game
* #4 Stanford gets smacked around at home by #7 Oregon, a 53-30 beating
* Clemson wins their ACC Division
* Tennessee STILL winless in SEC play
* Purdue wins 26-23 vs. Ohio State in Overtime

The BCS rankings will be released later tonight. Basically, get rid of Boise State and Stanford from the Top 5 ranks. Speaking of Boise State, here are some numbers that were snapped from their home loss to TCU:

* Regular Season home win streak - 65
* Conference home win streak - 47
* Home winning streak - 35

Regardless of their opposition, these numbers are still impressive. However, TCU was too much for Boise State. Wild day, especially this past Saturday of college football!

Week 12 BCS rankings ( LINK )

John ... your Cougars, coming in at #11, very nice. 👍

O.S.U Bucks fall in overtime to Purdue 26 - 23 :grumpy: Now 6-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Tough season with 2 to go - home against Penn State then take I-75 North, to the Big House to square off against the Wolverines of Michigan. I'm not looking forward to this years Michigan game. Michigan's revenge, from the Tressel era. It had to happen eventually.

Side note - any ideas for this years Heisman ? It's getting to be that time.

The Cougars will not get the respect because of the "strength of schedule" in the eyes of the "BS" BCS rankings.

Lets just get a playoff system already NCAA, it is about time for one. The BCS is a farce!
