A point from earlier... I was concerned about the games at Texas and at Oklahoma State in regards to Kansas' 2013 season. It's still brutal to go to Texas and Oklahoma State in back-to-back weekends.

Other musings...

* I see all the fancy new graphics with CBS Sports Network as I'm watching USCal at Hawaii. Bright and beautiful sunshine in Hawaii (go fig).

* UConn losing to Towson... that would be stunning if this was basketball (men or women). UConn is still mostly a basketball school, but its football has made various improvements. Where the those improvements after tonight's game? 33-18 was the score for the Towson Tigers beating the Connecticut Huskies. Wow.

* There was another FCS-beat-FBS upset: 22-21 Southern Utah def. South Alabama. The Jaguars of the University of South Alabama lost by one to the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah University.

My Houston Cougars will host the Southern Jaguars at our temporary home- Reliant Stadium while our new stadium is still under construction. The game is tomorrow night.

This Texas Tech-SMU game is hard to watch, every other play a kid gets his knee bent the wrong way. At least three really nasty tackles so far, one was right next to a microphone on the sideline and the guy's scream was absolutely primal.

Big game for the Pirates tomorrow, hopefully we can start our season off with a win. Unfortunately, I will have to miss the game. It'll be the first time in over 10 years I've missed a home game, so hopefully everyone in my group can pull the boys through without me.

Hey, FAU actually hung with the canes. Would've been a closer game have the offense managed to score touchdowns. I was really impressed with the defense, but the offense just couldn't get it done in the endzone.

North Dakota State stunned Kansas State last night at K-State to the tune of a 24-21 win. It may be safe to say NDSU is the new Appalachian State. The Bison have beaten certain FBS teams before. The Wildcats got put to sleep last night in a stunning loss.

When I thought of Miami and FAU, I tried to remember which school that infamous brawl happened. It was Miami and Florida International. The Miami vs. FAU game was apparently the first-ever game between the two schools. And according to our Omnis, Miami won.

Tonight... I'll try to follow Alabama at Virginia Tech and Georgia at Clemson. I forgot to mention this lighthearted note... this may be one of the best college football weekends because it's all about college. No pro football to dilute the collegiate fun. Sadly, this is about the ONLY weekend where the gridiron football world is on college football. So enjoy this Labor Day weekend of football!

Good luck to all of your teams.

Random musings...

* Maybe one of the big surprises of games completed so far was Northern Illinois beating Iowa at Iowa. I think it was 30-27 in Iowa City in favor of the Northern Illinois Huskies.

* Ohio State was clowning Buffalo early on- two touchdown drives, two two-point conversions. Buffalo eventually made game out of it until Ohio State pulled away to a 40-20 win.

* Georgia Tech once beat a team 222-0 (Cumberland College back in the 1920s). GT smacked Elon 70-0.

* I think my Houston Cougars beat Southern 66-13 on Friday night. The conference games will be more important since we now have a chance to play in a major Bowl game. The winner of the AAC conference will have that honor of playing in a major Bowl game. So we need to beat on teams like Rutgers, UConn, and everybody else in the conference to have a chance.

* There was a game that Tulane had earlier this week where one player was ejected for Targeting. Tulane won the game in a blowout, but the rules were enforced.

Folks... your Saturdays just got interesting again. College football is back!

[UPDATE] More musings...

* Wow... just wow. Eastern Washington of the NCAA FCS took down #25 Oregon State 49-46(?). That has to suck if you're an Oregon State Beaver. Upset!

* #1 Alabama slammed Virginia Tech 35-10 in Blacksburg. So much for my "close game" prediction...

* #8 Clemson held serve at home 38-35 over #5 Georgia at Clemson.

* Eastern Illinois is a team that has given the NFL players like... Tony Romo. Well, when EIU headed down to San Diego State, they ripped the Aztecs a new one. Like... 40-19 rip you a new one. This is damned disappointing for SDSU. Then again... it's San Diego State. Wow. But wait, San Diego State... it gets better! You're at Ohio State next weekend!

The Buckeye Blitz (week #1)
It wasn't overly pretty in Columbus today, but the #2 ranked Buckeyes managed to get in done. This did not look like a #2 ranked team. The offense is there, the defense, performing with 9 new faces has some question marks on them (1st game jitters ???), not so sure about that. If OSU wants to be a contender, the "D" needs to get it together.

OSU came out of the gates real strong, scoring on their first three possessions. Jumping out to a 23 -0 lead in the first quarter. The first two TD's were capped off with 2 point conversions. Urban Meyer sending a message early ? 23 - 0 end of the first. Buffalo would not go away. They put up 13 in the 2nd while OSU only manged to put up 7. At the half ... 30 - 13 Buckeyes. The second half was relatively quiet. The 3rd quarter saw each team only put a TD each ... 37 - 20 OSU after the 3rd. The 4th, it appeared that both teams layed down. The only scoring was the Buckeyes putting up a field goal.
Final : #2 OSU 40 - Buffalo 20

Heisman hopeful Braxton Miller went 15-22 for 178 yards / 2 TD's and rushed for 77 yards on 17 attempts.
Carlos Hyde's fill in Jordan Hall did a fantastic job. Hall rushed for 159 yards on 21 carries and scored 2 TD's
Kenny Guiton (back-up QB) came in briefly to relieve a cramped up Miller. Guitons first pass resulted in a 21 yd. TD pass to Chris Fields.

Not to take anything away from Buffalo, they played well and had their good moments.
Khalil Mack was the defensive thorn in the Buckeyes side. He had a pick 6 off of Braxton Miller for 45 yards to pull the Bulls to within 10. He was in Millers face a few times and even had a sack.
QB Joe Licata was 19/32 for 185 yds. and 2 TD's
WR Alex Neutz was the offensive go to guy for Buffalo, 9 receptions for 98 yards.

Some video highlights.

Washington Huskies beat Boise State Broncos 38-6.

I wasn't able to catch most of the Washington vs. Boise State game, but I did catch the last quarter. I was surprised, and very happy about, how well we played. The plays seemed pretty tight, and offense was fantastic while defense was decent. I'll say we're off to a pretty good start!

I was actually surprised how well the dawgs played. I figured that Boise would have won. I truly hope that UW has a pretty good season after what happened last night.

FCS teams are cupcakes, but they are not always sweet to FBS teams. Here is an article I found on the FCS upsets that have happened:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/9/1/4681824/fcs-football-upsets-fbs-2013-week-1

Eight FCS teams ended up taking down FBS teams. That is a new record for most FBS teams to be defeated in one week. One of our GTPlaneteers is a fan of one of the schools that was beaten- Iowa State. The Cyclones lost to a very good FCS school- Northern Iowa. Even though UConn getting blasted by 15 to Towson is bad, that's nothing compared to the root canal Eastern Illinois gave San Diego State.

Congratulations to all of the FCS victors over their FBS opposition.

McNeese State. 32 point win over South Florida.

McNeese State is usually a powerful team in FCS. Maybe I was so drawn to the San Diego State loss to Eastern Illinois. South Florida is usually a pretty good football school. They are surely more talented than SDSU. McNeese State is NOT a sorry school. But to take down South Florida the way McNeese State did, that's a huge statement.

And when it comes to FBS getting upset by FCS, let's not forget when Appalachian State beat the University of Michigan at "the Big House." That anniversary either already passed or is coming up. But I know one Joey D was pretty upset at the Michigan Wolverines getting disgraced at home by the Mountaineers of Appalachian State.

I don't follow football as much as most of you do in here, but at least during the season, I like to keep an eyes on my Washington Huskies. Hopefully we put in a better season than last year.

Go Dawgs!

The Washington Huskies .....

This team puts me so much in mind of Purdue. They are both what I refer to as sleeper teams. One never knows which team will show up on game day. Will the dominant force show up, or will the cheerleaders dawn the uniform ? Washington and Purdue - two teams you don't put $$$ on, b/c they will usually burn you.

Nice start ... knocking off a ranked team, #19 Boise State. Keep it up. 👍

*cue Monday Night Football theme* Monday Night Football... COLLEGE STYLE! Let's do it.

Florida State at Pittsburgh TONIGHT!

It's Florida State at Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh's ACC debut. The Seminoles are looking to start the season strong when they meet the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Steel City Kitties are hopeful to start 1-0 themselves. Who'll get it done tonight at beautiful Hines Field? We shall see tonight. Best of luck to both teams.

Omnis, we play Florida Atlantic on Thursday night. I'll be back at the stadium this time, and it'll be the unveiling of our new black uniforms. They look awesome. Hopefully look good, feel good, play good reigns supreme, but I saw that the Owls actually hung with Miami for awhile, in which case we may be screwed .

Thought to myself
"Hey! I'll pick up some Stanford tickets, preferably around Thanksgiving so I can go see them with all my mates"!
Wrong. Starting at $87 for the Notre Dame game. Annoyed...

Ah well, heres to a great season, Go Cardinal!

A Stanford Cardinals fan, nice. Stanford is actually one of my personal picks to win the PAC-12. It was between them and Oregon. The PAC-12 should be a good conference to watch this year. Good luck to your Cardinals.

Two debuts are happening at Hines Field tonight. The Pittsburgh Panthers are making their ACC debut, hosting #11 Florida State Seminols. The Panthers debut is not going so well. 31-13 FSU's lead nearing the end of the 3rd qtr.

On the other side of the ball, FSU is debuting a freshman QB in the name of Jameis Winston. This kid is looking very good. At this point in the game, he is 20-21 for 319 yds. w/2 TD's and 1 rushing TD and we still have a quarter to go.

#11 FSU is looking good.

EDIT :
Jameis Winston has been pulled. He finished up at 25-27 for 356 yds and 4 TD's (1 rushing). What a debut. Congrats to Jameis Winston on this showing.

Final score in this contest 41-13 FSU.

The fact that they've stayed around Post-Luck, Post-Gerhardt, and Post-Harbaugh proves that they're a team that won't slip back to how horrid they were before 2008 anytime soon.

I also support the Sooners, but with less intensity. They should be pretty good this year too.

North Dakota State stunned Kansas State last night at K-State to the tune of a 24-21 win. It may be safe to say NDSU is the new Appalachian State. The Bison have beaten certain FBS teams before. The Wildcats got put to sleep last night in a stunning loss.

You have no idea how happy this makes me. Manhattan is a wonderful town and K-State is a great school, but it makes me happy seeing the Wildcats taken down a peg.

Yeah, sorry you lost, but you did put up one hell of a fight ... 52-51. That was a 15 round heavy weight knock down drag out battle you had going on.

==========

Here is what is going on in week #2 of the '13 season.
See any possible upsets working here ?

I've got my eye on the #17 Michigan -vs- #14 Notre Dame (in Ann Arbor). Michigan looked pretty bad-ass last week. I think they will lay a whipping on the #14 team.

Another one to see - #6 S. Carolina goes to #11 Georgia to take on the Bulldogs. I'm thinking S. Carolina wins in a close one.

The battle of Florida is usually pretty good.
The #12 Florida Gators make a trip into Miami to take on the Hurricanes. I think the Gators will roll.

Rutgers plays Norfolk State this weekend. If we lose I may have to start drinking (and I hate alcohol).

The new AP poll is out. There is a noticeable change. It's not surprising to me to see Oregon jump up into the #2 spot and bumping back Ohio State to #3. The way OSU's defense played last week, they are lucky they did not drop to 4 or 5. OSU had better get that defense in gear this week against San Diego State or they may even see more of a drop.

Get it together Bucks !!!

1. Alabama
2. Oregon
3. Ohio St.
4. Clemson
5. Stanford
6. South Carolina
7. Texas A&M
8. Louisville
9. LSU
10. Florida St.
11. Georgia
12. Florida
13. Oklahoma St.
14. Notre Dame
15. Texas
16. Oklahoma
17. Michigan
18. UCLA
19. Northwestern
20. Washington
21. Wisconsin
22. Nebraska
23. Baylor
24. TCU
25. USC

This weekend is the first conference game for the University of Houston in the American Athletic Conference. We're going to Philadelphia to take on Temple University. I am just hopeful the Cougars don't have the kind of weekend Connecticut and South Florida had (as far as in-conference teams are concerned). The AAC is obviously a weak sauce conference as far as the major conferences are concerned. However, this is a chance for Houston to really become a player. So I'm interested to see how UH does at Temple. Houston hasn't been the same fire-breathing team since Case Keenum got drafted. I am not expecting much, but hoping for a win. Houston is currently 1-0 after they throttled Southern 62-13 last weekend.

Tonight includes games like Florida Atlantic at East Carolina and Sacramento State at Arizona State. I seen a few pictures of ECU's new black uniforms, and I like them. Of course... colors won't matter when it's all about beating the other team on the field. That should be a pretty good game between FAU and ECU tonight.

The ECU Pirates (CAMS team) has swashbuckled the Owls of FAU 31-13. At 1:03 left in the 4th quarter, FAU has finally scored their first TD of the season. This has got to be an offensive coordinators worst nightmare .... 2 games (4 FG's and 1 TD). It might just be a long year in Florida. :nervous:

Loving the new "Black Look" of ECU ... very nice.
Congrats on the win CAM. 👍

I wish they would have sold those jerseys, I would have bought one.

After watching the team for the first time, I worry that our only offensive threat against quality defense is Justin Hardy. Our run game could be a tad bit more productive to set up the pass.

My favorite part of the game was when an FAU player fumbled and there was a big scrum. One of our defensive backs (Magazu) came out of the pile with the ball and just nonchalantly started jogging toward the sideline with the refs still digging in the pile. When he reached the sideline, he handed the ball to the line judge who had to run 50 yards across the field to tell the referee we had recovered.
