Actually Sarah Palin already issued her condolences although she probably feels like an ass for saying Rep. Giffords was in her cross-hairs.

This was a shock to me when I first saw it on the news and it was pretty sad. I am happy the it appears Rep. Giffords will survive but unfortunately the 6 others weren't as lucky, especially the little girl who was killed. They are claiming it's mental health issues with the shooter, but really? I hope he gets life with out parole in a tiny little cell in solitary confinement.

And as always, when anything happens like this it brings into questions of gun laws. I believe it's still way to easy to acquire a firearm in the US. I don't think we should outlaw guns by any means but I think something needs to be done to make sure that guns stay in the hands of those who are capable of using them responsibly. What that would be, I don't know, but I feel like something should be done or at least serious discussion had about it.

I love how everyone is turning this into a political show. Hey, guess what? That guy is just some lunatic who was in fact "quite liberal" according to someone that knew him.

“As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy,” [a] former classmate, Caitie Parker, wrote in a series of Twitter feeds Saturday.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/09/us/politics/09shooter.html?_r=1&hp

From the sound of it he was way past the whole liberal ideology and went even further left, I guess anarchist would be it? From what the news was saying this guy thought even police should be done away with.

It doesn't really matter. He was just a nut case.

Anarchism is so far left it loops all the way around to far right wing :P

But really, this guy seems like just a total whackjob, and no amount of anti-gun legislation is going to stop a violent whackjob (but this is a discussion for another thread).

It's still a politically motivated, which is why I hate when anyone becomes so ingrained with a political ideology it borders on being fanatical. It just takes something to set someone off and then you get something like this. I've seen a lot of this on the internet, Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, even here on GTP, it makes me question the stability of some people since they are so fanatical about their ideology...whatever it may be.

It's not politically motivated. It's a manifestation of mental illness. The Abe Lincoln assassination was politically motivated. This guy wasn't a politically motivated assassin, he was just a sick man that went on a shooting spree. That poor nine-year-old did not die because of her politics.

And I think it's insulting that you would even lump anyone here on GTP into the same category as this wacko. Come on, man.

He's a huge whackjob who was so convinced anarchism was the answer...that he shot a congresswoman...

However, I think the thing with the internet, is that people kinda save up all of their political energy and just let loose on the internet because it's not like real life where you have to worry about offending those who you deal with on a daily basis.

From all the reports that are surfacing the shooting of the Representative was politically motivated. He didn't agree with her or the way she did her job. Being mentally unstable just took him from complaining about it to actually pulling the trigger. The by-standers seem to have been targeted for unknown, or at least unreleased reasons. I would imagine the shooter, being mentally unstable, just got the adrenalin going and kept on shooting, either that or he was hoping for suicide by cop.

Find it insulting all you want, but I've read a lot of rhetoric here. Many people seem a bit off when it comes to a lot of thing. Hell looking at some of the comments in the GT section you would think that give the chance someone would try to cause harm to the Forza guy, or even Kaz for some how denying them something.

I'm not mentioning names or even implying anyone, nor would I since that would be in violation of the rules. All I can say is some members do concern me with what they say.

Ya, well this guy let loose on the internet and look what happened.

I'm not denying he's a whack job at all, he is, but this is a guy that took his political ideology way to far.

I personally feel while the shooting itself may/may not have been politically motivated, that Sarah Palin and perhaps those responsible for Tea Party rhetoric, should be slapped w/ a civil suit. I've long had issues w/ the litigious nature of the US in general, but this presents itself as the perfect opportunity to take advantage of it. No responsible public figure should be allowed to put someone in crosshairs, as if they are being targeted by a gun. And for those who feel the anti-Tea Party sentiment is unjustified, then why was the crosshairs picture removed immediately afterwards? If those whom placed it there were ok w/ the connations it bore when originally placed, unless they feel some twinge of responsibility, there should be no reason to remove it. This is not a Conservative vs. Liberal Arguement.. this is an issue of civility, and what the Tea Party has demonstrated time and time again, is its inability to reign in its fringe members to adhere to a sense of decency. Incidents like these should show the Left and the Right why Palin and her fervent followers should be dismissed from public service and shipped off somewhere. Let the Dems, Reps and Inds fight it out with words and campaign commercials, cause if fanatics are willing to gun down decent-looking white women, then Obama better step up his security now.(I really worry for him sometimes:nervous:)

Because leaving it up would be disastrously bad PR?

Come on, Sarah Palin didn't rally the troops to make this crazy guy shoot a congresswoman. "In the crosshairs" is just a figure of speech, and they disassociated themselves with it because like I said, it's bad PR.

Ya the shooter wasn't even a Tea Party sympathizer, he probably didn't like Sarah Palin much. Palin used a figure of speech, which now is going to bite her in the ass, I don't understand he we can blame her for this.

I'm not saying she rallied them w/ that intention. Nor am i saying your average Tea-Partier is a gun-toting madman, but i've seen the rallies, and i know my complexion, and my liberal attitude on things would not have me safely walking through a rally headed up by Mrs Palin. I mean lets examine the Boston Tea Party as a whole, it basically glorifies destruction as a means of getting one's pt across. But it has become such a part of the American mythology, that no one dare speak against it. Truth be told it was probably executed in a similar manner to the depiction on "Family Guy" in which drunken jackass Peter and his friends dumped barrels into the sea because they were unsatisfied w/ something, and it chills me to the core that there is a large population of Americans w/ the same attitude: if you don't like a policy, don't litigate, destroy something to get your pt across. but as our european, australian, and other international bretheren probably have already figured out, that truly has become the American Way...

But we can blame her for using overly aggressive Cold War rhetoric without thought for the potential implications. It's fairly plain that she didn't have anything to do this (though if I had a political hitlist, the first thing I'd do it make sure my assassins came from the opposite end of the political spectrum to me - especially if I was going after people I considered to be "traitors" to my cause), but what it does make plain is that she's not really fit to be in any position of power. People who have genuine power have no need to be afraid. It's the people with control that you want to keep an eye on, because they'll only ever wants more. Palin's unfortunate rhetoric has (to me at least, though I'm not American) demonstrated that she doesn't want people living in their America. She wants people living in her America, and she'll resort to fear-mongering to do it. Australian politics can be bitchy at times; nobody is better at running a scare campaign than the Liberal party. Or so I thought - but then I started seeing ads from America where the Tea Party had superimposed Obama's face over an image of Death. That's pretty much despicable.

As for the Congresswoman who has been shot, I hope she has a speedy recovery and that this sort of thing doesn't deter her from continuing in politics. I never understood the backlash against Obama's healthcare reforms, because America's healthcare system has always struck me as being backward,a nd I can't really understand a system that only really benefits the rich.

Unfortunately most politicians in America are like this in my opinion, they want you to live in a world based on their ideologies, not one based in what would be best for the country. However, a lot of it balances out and we are left with a pretty "meh" society.

The Teabaggers are fanaticals and is an extreme end of American politics so it not really a great way to look at how the people in charge are...although they do have enough power to actually get people into office that really can mess things up.

Also, sure, that congresswoman may survive, but what kind of survival will she have? Permanent brain damage, never regaining full use of her body, her mind probably reduced to a 5 year olds. That's not really a life... that said, I hope she makes a 100% recovery, but with brain injuries it not very likely.

Not nearly how her life will be. She will have speech problems, since the bullet passed through the speech center of her brain. Basically her trouble will be: "Danben, I like your blue shirt" but she can't think of the word "blue." But that's about the extent of any injuries. She is very lucky though, if the bullet moved mere centimeters in any direction, it could have been fatal.

Great, now apparently the Westboro Baptist Church will be protesting at some of the victims' funerals.👎👎👎👎

Tragedy really brings out the best of America doesn't it?

I'd really like foreigners to know that we aren't all crackpots in America...I promise!

:

Well, that is good, must better than other possibilities. Hopefully it doesn't impact her life too much, and she can carry on with her life as if nothing has changed. I imagine not being able to think of certain words would be very frustrating though.

Probably. I should also add that she won't be able to communicate things very well at times. But again, It could be much much worse. And speech therapy will probably help alot.

The ironic thing about all this is that this will certainly help her political career alot. Look at how Reagan's approval rating skyrocketed after he was shot. Seriously, who would go up against her now?

But let's not forget. While she luckily survived, there were five victims who were unfortunately not so lucky. One of which was an eight year old who was shaping up to be a future congresswoman herself, and only wanted to go down to the Safeway to meet and shake hands with someone in congress.

All this had to happen because someone who wasn't happy with their government thought this would be suitable.

+1. It's so true! A little full of ourselves, but if you were the new kid on the colonial block, and started kickin empirical ass like we did way back when so would you:tup: but there's quite a few of us that have no intention of perpetuating the dumb, lazy, and rude stereotype the rest of "us" excel at demonstrating....must my drifting experience suffer for the ignorance of my countrymen? Say it isn't so! :sly:

Olberman is a giant dick. This is exactly the kind of slimy taking-advantage-of that I was talking about. There is nothing political about this-- this guy was crazy as hell and I fail to see how he could have a consistent, coherent position. He was likely angry at the congresswoman for dismissing him during some kind of public event because he was a wacked out dumbass. There is no left/right thing to this story, and I'm presuming that the FBI report will come to a similar conclusion. We shall find out in time.

We got someone like that already. Name starts with an O....

That's not really his point. (You've already made it partisan.)

Condemning glorifications of violence — and reminding all those in power what influence they have — is not taking advantage of a situation, and is actually rather standard fare.

I notice you never challenged the validity of what he actually said; as a Canadian who's bombarded daily with American news stations (as is every Canadian), I can corroborate his recollection of militant rhetoric, which stands in stark contrast to our own lack of it from those in power.

To even suggest a thing in Parliament would be a heinous misstep, and likely result in dismissal from office.

Instead of chalking this incident up to, as you would summarise him, an apolitical whacko, is to overlook a whole history of apolitical whackos committing the same kinds of crimes who must therefore be utterly immune to the kind of environment America has fostered.

I couldn't think of one single assassination of a Canadian politician - I had to check Wikipedia to find out that we've had two in the last 150 years.

Imagine if Harper were to say Ignatieff was in his crosshairs. Total :censored:storm

Obama wants an America where everyone can have access to health care. Palin wants an America where health care is a privelige enjoyed only by the rich, white and appropriately God-fearing among them. And there's no way that should be allowed to happen.

Forgive me for having, in a way, made it partisan. This was not my intent. I don't have a problem with Olbermann's repudiation of violence. I have a problem with party politics and the falsity of this whole left-right R-D business. I don't like Olbermann's direction of his statement. He is implying that the killer's behavior stems from political rhetoric. To my mind, this is further empowering the false paradigm in which people seem to be stuck. That makes statements like these more polarizing than you think. What he's trying to say is being said through a collectivist filter, and that is what ruins it.

Parties only exist for one reason: to win elections. You don't fix social degeneration with political parties, politicians, talking heads, and blame and shame games. Mass media and campaigning are designed to captivate individuals. It isn't within reason to expect that they tone down. Instead, individuals must divert their attention away from their grasp and back towards their own humanity.

Obama wants an America where everyone can have access to health care. Palin wants an America where health care is a privelige enjoyed only by the rich, white and appropriately God-fearing among them. And there's no way that should be allowed to happen.

 This isn't the place for that.

I think you should actually try living here & paying attention to what's actually going on in this country. Neither of what you said is the truth.
