If you watch the shooter's YouTube videos you can pretty plainly see he's incoherent, thinks very highly of himself and his incoherent "ideas" and knows just enough about what a syllogism is to do it wrong.

His 'profile' says the Meno is one of his favorite books. Meno is a Platonic dialogue that is covered in first year philosophy courses that he has put there in order to make himself look educated in the same way a person would disingenuously cite Citizen Kane or something as their favorite movie to impress a film crowd.

He is not left wing, he is just an idiot. Citing the Communist Manifesto as your favorite book shows a very pop culture understanding of Marxism to begin with. If he were as committed to avoiding the brain-washery he cites in his videos as those videos would say he is, then he might have seen the irony in citing a purposefully written propaganda pamphlet as his favorite book. In reality, he's just too stupid to bother having read the Grundrisse. Citing Mein Kampf, well, that speaks for itself.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, then, that pop culture news outlets (both left and right wing, as it were) have been endlessly labelling and bickering and politicizing this idiot to fit their agenda. He's a crazy right wing tea party sympathizer! He's a pinko left wing commie socialist! No. He's an unintelligent and pretentious young man that doesn't have a coherent ideology of any sort, and it's very sad that more developed people have had to suffer and die because of his aimless, stupid confusion.

Edit: And further, nobody who makes a 7 minute faux-theatrical flag burning video set to the dulcet tones of "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" ought to be taken seriously by anybody, ever. The flag burning was the least offensive part of that digital abortion of a video.

So the Westboro Baptist Church is going to protest at the funeral of the 9 year old girl who was killed in all of this. Seriously? People make me sick. I'm all for freedom of speech but what Westboro does is harassment. We find legal loop holes for everything, I'm sure there has to be one to stop these idiots from protesting like they do.

They are there to troll for lawsuits.

I have counter protested them in the past and it takes a good deal of patience not to give them what they are asking for.

If ever a group needed to be assassinated, they do but it needs to be each and every member so none are left to file suit.

Protesting anyone's funeral is just wrong no matter who they were in life.
It only serves to hurt the family left behind and is therefore pure malice.

After services are over let them protest all they like but leave the people to grieve their loss..

Tragedy really brings out the best of America doesn't it?

All I see is ridiculous gun violence once again highlighting your countries baffling love affair with guns and people exploiting this massacre to further their careers.

My favourite quote on the Fox News channel that we get here was this: "Earlier I made the mistake of saying that the gunman will face a judge for the first time tomorrow. That's not true, *point finger at camera* he already faced a judge AND HE KILLED HIM!!"

Even the thread title is disturbing me. Congresswoman critically injured in an Arizona shooting!!! Never mind the people that were killed right?

I'm impressed with everything here except the part about never taking this guy seriously. Apparently, literally everybody in his neighborhood was well aware of and quite frightened by him. The students at his school were so frightened that the campus police were called in to investigate, and he was subsequently forced out of the school. Okay, maybe if he was still in school, he wouldn't have acted out, and maybe the attention of school security was a mistake. But maybe this is one of those cases where, in hindsight of course, extra attention would have been warranted in order to prevent the slaughter of innocents.

The difference is that were are citizens and not subjects here in the US.

Gun violence is nowhere near as prevalent as the media or anti-gun folk would have the public at large believe.

Most of us are responsible human beings.

I'd like to learn more details of the school security investigation, and the reports of his neighbors. The investigation which denied his application for military service, at a time when drug users and felons were (are) being accepted, might also make for interesting reading.

Perhaps because at the time the thread was started that was all that was known? Look at when the OP was posted. At that time all that was known was that there was a shooting at an event held by Rep Giffords and she was hit. Everything else was a bunch of conflicting reports.

So, don't worry this "disturbing" thread title was not the result of some gun-obsessed American desensitized by some non-existent gun culture to the point that they didn't understand the full scope of the tragedy. In fact, I would say that none of that describes driftking18594.

Sorry, I meant taken seriously as an intellectual / political force who actually represents what the pundits thrust upon his character. Taken seriously as a threat of violence, definitely, he should have been... If he were in my classes I'd probably have stopped going, switched to a well placed seat, reported his craziness, something...

So you're saying the media can report that someone is critically injured and has not been killed from a gunshot wound to the head PLUS report her identity yet can't tell that a bunch of others were lying dead on the ground? Come on I don't buy that for a second.

@ FK

I can't say exactly what the BBC story said when this thread was created as it has been updated since. But I do know that in the US I heard breaking news that there was a shooting at an event held by the congresswoman, she was shot in the head, others were shot as well, and the suspected gunman has been apprehended. "No further details are known at this time." That is how it works during breaking news when no one knows any real details. Since then I can tell you the names of the victims, that the young girl was born on September 11, 2001 and was featured in a book about 9/11 babies. I can tell you that a federal judge was shot and killed who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time because he was making a routine grocery trip and stopped by to greet Rep Giffords, whom he knew personally.

These are details that were not reported where I heard them by the evening of the shooting. Our power was out and we were left to reading the news on my wife's iPhone. All we had at 11:00PM was 20 people possibly shot at a Congreswwoman's event, including the congresswoman. The news can only report what it knows, and at that time the congresswoman's name was the only one known because she was holding the event. Everyone else was an innocent bystander whose names had not been released publicly yet because the full details were not known and/or their families had not yet been notified, which is something else the US media usually does. I'm not sure I heard details of other victims until Sunday evening.

Just read this on the DP:

With all the media hype about the shooting of a Congresswoman, understandably so...

...she is still alive, but a federal judge is dead.

If a federal judge was murdered by a gunman on any other day, it would have been even BIGGER news. Especially if he was pro-abortion. However, this was a disposable federal judge. Not worthy of mention. Judge John Roll was the leading judicial voice supporting Sheriff Richard Mack's Tenth Amendment lawsuit against the Feds. Sheriff Mack has stated that Judge Roll was by far the best Federal Judge in the U.S. (Constitutionally speaking).

So good riddance, I suppose. No discussion about his character, his grieving family, his service or his case rulings. Besides, his being pro-gun might not sync with the tea party label which was so readily applied to the murderer kook.

Judge John McCarthy Roll...A Patriot who upheld the Constitution by helping to defeat portions of the illegal federal power grab, known as the Brady Bill.

R.I.P.

It's so true. All this talk about the Congresswoman and I've never heard any news about the Judge that died and what his career entailed.

Not really any more sickening than using such a tragedy explicitly for the purposes of furthering an agenda about gun violence in America.

Probably no country in the world has a greater love affair with guns than Afghanistan. I've heard 10 guns for each person is the average number.

He could have used a bomb. That includes if he didn't have access to a gun.

But by all means, do continue with your witty remarks. It definitely proves without a doubt that you actually care about the topic in question rather then just what it means for your uses.

And even less had his parents aborted him or even never met to begin with.

and if my aunt had balls she'd be my bigassed uncle.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not against guns at all, but if I had to face a nut job with evil intent I would rather he had a knife to a gun any day.

Never been cut or shot at have you?

I'll take a nut with a gun every time because you have to be halfway good an clear headed to use it well.
A knife? no so much and the damage can be just as bad if not worse than gunshot.

Wouldn't you rather have a gun of your own?

EDIT: tyl0r has a good point. I'm done.

Do Americans even have a left wing in politics? Should it not be right wing vs right of center?

Yes, we have a left wing! Guys like Dennis Kucinich on the national stage, and there are loads of lefties at the state and local level in the coastal states.

Right now there is tremendous flux in our political balance, So it's hard to say what the exact numbers are. Left, right and "center" are very roughly in 3rds at the moment, I would judge.

Nut jobs who want to kill are an abberation--you do not punish society --and deny constitutional rights, because a crazy person decides to kill people ...At the scene WHERE armed citizens --none had the time to return fire before the goofballs magazine malfunctioned and he was pummeled .

Once the crazy guys weapon was no longer capable of being fired, without some work--those that did carry did the CORRECT thing by not shooting ..first they will have shot the person who wrestled the gun away in the confusion --second you do not shoot into a crowd.

This isn't a question over the second ammendment ..as long as a threat exist and the government is incable of protecting the individual , we have the right to protect our lives and property.

but as this case illustrates --even an army would have been incapable of stopping the shooter....in a free society with representative government , we need the ability to freely mingle--what should be asked of the blowhard sherriff of that county . is " WTF where YOUR GUYS ?

@ " left wing politics " ...why you think Obama got pummeled in the last election ? the USA is a center right Country --we have been failed by BOTH of our major parties--the democrats hve made themselves extict again ..as long a Republicans LISTEN and govern by the will of the voters --unlike the demnocrats who decided they knew what was best for us --and just got curb stomped for it.

I just watched a video of Fred Phelps talking about this, that "pastor" filled me with rage, ****, what the hell is wrong with him?
In a hypothetical list of people who deserve to be killed, he would be at the top.

Like I said, he and his ilk are trolling for lawsuits.

Yes they should be killed but truthfully aren't worth the cost of a bullet.

Fred Phelps is a shining example of what bigotry and hate combined with a twisted religious view looks like. But there is a reason why his church only has about 30 members.

Truth be told, if the media and others would ignore him he would eventually go away.

Like that would ever happen.👎👎

You call that a knife?

I couldn't resist!

Edit: They had one of Jared Loughner's old friends on the Today Show. It really painted a picture of the downward spiral he went through.
