I really hate the fact that GM's entire lineup is going with Camaro styled taillights.

This is one of the others.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Camaro is awful and wouldn't want to own one, but if my choices were to buy either a Camaro or Corvette, a Camaro makes more sense to me since I'm getting nearly the same performance.

I'd rather drive the 3,200lb car versus the 3,800lb car IMO. I find the current Camaro way too fat.

When I think of a Corvette nothing "young" comes to mind at all, all I see is fat, middle aged guys with expensive sunglasses who drive their Corvettes to the golf course on Saturday morning.
I've personally never understood that. I wouldn't care if I was the only person under 80 driving one, it wouldn't impact my decision to buy. Of course, GM would have to consider this if this is what many people considered when buying, for whatever reason.

As far as the Corvette being worth it, it just feels like a less expensive car inside and there's nothing really outstanding that makes me thing, ya it's a $60,000 car. I mean it feels no better than a $20,000 V6 Camaro. The only thing it's got going for it is the engine and there is no way that's worth that kind of money when I can go just as fast for less.
The engine is 10% of the car. The Corvette is a sports car. The Camaro is not even comparable. I'll admit that most people are going to go cruising on the road with them so they won't really need the Corvette's extra performance. They might still find it desirable however. As for the $60,000 price tag, it's that performance that justifies it. The Corvette is not expensive for what you get.

My thought on the interior has always been that it's part of the price point. It's a cheap interior which makes the car cheap. That's a plus to me, the interior's job is to give me a place to drive, the rest of the car is there to wow me and will do a much better job than a pair of seats and a dashboard ever could. The Viper just got a revamped interior and the price went up from sub $100,000 to $120,000. Not really worth it to me.

I'd actually think that younger buyers would care less about some of the issues you've brought up. Sales with them probably all boil down to their inability to afford the thing.

but when it comes to pure performance only I don't see the reason for spending $60,000 to get a Corvette when a $30,000 Camaro will be nearly as good. So if I had my choice between the two, I'd get a Camaro over a Corvette

I said this already, but a Camaro isn't half of a Corvette when you really look at performance.

It's because by that time in someones life, at least around here, you can actually afford it.

You might not care, but I'm guessing many younger buyers do. Image ranks up there for many younger buyers of any car, and if the image isn't right it's going to be a hard sell. I mean take Buick for an example, do you really think they could sell a car aimed at young people sucessfully? Probably not since it's ingrained in so many young peoples' brains that they're cars for old people.

Yes, a Corvette performs better but I don't think it performs $30,000 better. The interior on both cars are pretty comparable in terms of quality and they both use virtually the same LS3 engine. I'm not sure what you're exactly getting for $30,000 more. I'm not sure all what the C7 is going to be offering so it all could change, but looking at a 2013 Camaro and a 2013 Corvette I don't think $30,000 in value should separate the cars. That's the point I'm trying to make.

GM really just needs to come out with something like the Solstice again that doesn't suck if they want to attract young people to the sportier side of their brand.

So Jalopnik is asking:

How Can Chevy Make The 2014 Corvette Appeal To Young Buyers?

Honestly, I don't think GM can. Unless they make the car the same price as a V8 Camaro or Mustang younger buyers simply can't afford it for the most part. There's nothing on a Corvette that makes it worth the $60,000+ price tag in my opinion, especially when you can get a Camaro with a very similar engine for half the price and pretty similar performance.

Thoughts?
Similar performance? In terms of what? Straight line performance til' 1/4 mile? The track times show the Corvette vastly superior, which is expected. The only Camaro that holds its own is the ZL1.

Hahahaha... Corvette is only marginally better then a Camaro?

Dude.... The Corvette is marginally better than 250k+ super cars. Base model could hold its own against some really expensive exotic cars...

Wow lol...

I always thought people paid money for a car because they drove them. Not to have your buddies sit in it for a minute and comment about the interior. Thats what your house is for.

And whoever said Corvettes only appeal to middle age+ men... Your kidding right? I'm 25. Everyone I know would kill for a Corvette. Its just not in most peoples budget.

Have you seen the amount of people that talk about having a good interior in hell, every car that comes out?

Similar engine, as in almost the same identical one.

Pretty similar performance meaning that a Camaro isn't severely outgunned by a Corvette. I know the Corvette performs better, but what I'm saying is that I don't think it performs $30,000 better. Sure there are many reasons one would pick a Corvette over a Camaro, I'm looking at it purely from a return on investment perspective.

I didn't say it only appeals to them, I said that's the image the Corvette tends to cast. Different cars appeal to different people for whatever reason, but often there is a stigma attached to a car that is hard to break.

There is no stigma that a sensible person would agree with. Its not a cheap car.

And your opinion about it not being worth 30 more grand due to performance.

What do you think is worth it? A GT500 Mustang?

$30,000 gets you a 6.2 V8, 100 extra horses, & an actual performance car, along with, imo, a much nicer interior build.

If you want to talk about similar engines, a SS starts at $32,000-$36,000 & from there on, I think the extra $14-18,000 for the Corvette is well worth the money for the performance & car you get.

And I haven't been in enough cars to make a call on what is worth that kind of money. I have driven both a 5th gen Camaro SS and a C6 Corvette and I personally didn't think the Corvette was worth $30,000 more. If the Corvette was $45,000-$50,000 new I could see where the price difference might be worth it, but not at $60,000.
Except, as above, a Corvette is
A) $20,000 more over a SS &
B) the Corvette retails for $50,000.

^^^Where as for $150-$200 you could get that amount of power with a supercharger.

Stigma's exist whether they are sensible or not and they typically exist for a reason. And comparatively, to other sports cars the Corvette is cheap.

To me the interiors are very similar in terms of quality, which neither I find to be very pleasent. The C6 is much better than the previous C5 though, I'll grant it that, but it's still plagued by GM's inability to make an interior worth noting.

And I'm not sure where you are getting the 100 extra horsepower figure at. The Camaro SS comes with 426hp and the Corvette comes with 430hp. So the SS is nearly $33,000 base so for $27,000 you're getting 4 more horsepower and probably what? 500 or so less pounds (I'm not entirely sure on either's curb weights so it's a guess).

Its a conversation that can't be won.

I think it is worth it. So There....

It's not about winning or losing, it's a discussion. I'm fine with people who do think it's worth it and obviously there are many people who do because Chevy sells quite a few Corvettes every year. I just happen to think it isn't.

There's also possible build quality changes between an ss camaro a C6 'vette. Things going on under the body that most people don't account for. Whether it feels like its 15-20 grand more expensive is one thing, but whether it's built 15-20 grand more expensive or not is another thing altogether.

Its a pointless conversation, especially with the points you are making.

Your saying the car isn't worth the extra money. Then you say....

?????

Its still a 50-60 thousand dollar car. How many 20 year olds do you see rolling around in 50 thousand dollar highly desired BMW's? Stigma? I think not.

But hey. If all your doing is picking up orange juice on the weekends, I could agree its not worth the extra money.

I'm getting it from you claiming the Corvette isn't worth the $30,000 more. For the Corvette to be $30,000 more, you have to be comparing it to the V6 Camaro.

Do you even bother looking at Chevrolet's site to get your price figures?
A Corvette is not $30,000 more than a Camaro SS.

2013 Camaro 1SS: $32,635

2013 Corvette: $49,600

I must admit, I didn't bother. I just got blown away by someone saying a Corvette wasn't worth the money....

I don't think it's worth the extra money over a Camaro, I'm not talking about any other car.

And while I don't see many 20 year olds with anything other than maybe a Chevy Cobalt, I do see several people in their late 20's, early 30's with nice, higher priced cars in my work's parking lot. BMW's, Mercedes, Audi's, etc are all plentiful, but it comes with what I do for a living and where I work.

Ah, apologies then, I must have seen the Corvette with the 3LT or 4LT pricing on it.

I just looked up the prices on the site. A ZL1 costs more than a base model corvette.

What models are you comparing?

Not really, it's an IT building. IT people tend to be young and have good paying jobs.

And I was comparing the Corvette Coupe to the Camaro SS, I mistakenly looked at either the 3LT or 4LT packaging prices when I got the price for the Corvette.

I don't think there's much they can do to make the Corvette appeal to people 17-30 more than it already does. To anybody in that age bracket looking for a quality sports car, nothing new can match it $ for $.

Even if some sort of stigma exists regarding the average owners, who gives a damn? Some young people will buy it because of the relative price, while another kind of young person will buy it because it's different to what other people his age drive.

Corvettes are fantastic looking, fast and good value. In my mind (and i'd imagine most people would agree with me here) that's what matters, not that Larry the octogenarian drives his to the golf course on senior's day.

The only issue they have that's really stopping 17-30 year olds from ripping the keys out of dealers hands, is the price point. Very few young people can justify the investment for any new car, and when you can get a similar effect from a cheaper Mustang or Camaro, the Corvette is always going to be a hard sell to the average twenty something.

With that said, I'm keen to see the unveiled C7 and hope that it matches the recent renderings, because they look great!

I agree with Joey when it comes to the Corvette. I think that I'd take a more refined European car over it if it was my daily driver. However, if It was a weeknd car and I had, say, an Audi A3 to commute in, the Corvette would be one of the first cars I'd look at. That said, I'd also look at the Camaro SS 1LE, because it's also a great bargain and actually handles fairly well.

And whoever said Corvettes only appeal to middle age+ men... Your kidding right? I'm 25. Everyone I know would kill for a Corvette. Its just not in most peoples budget.

I can't stand them, and most people who own them.

If I had the money to buy a 'Vette, it wouldn't even be a consideration for me. I'd probably end up buying a $10k car and putting $40k into it...

At the end of the day, a 10k dollar will be a 10k car and a vette will be a vette. Vettes have been one of my favorites for a very long time.
