Ataturk charged the military with maintaining democracy in the constitution of Turkey.

Erdogan was democratically elected, but is implementing an Islamic state.

The US is caught (frozen?) on the horns of a dilemma.

Great violence may be on the way.

Duuuuude. They just showed a helicopter shooting into a crowd.

I'm not military expert so take this with a grain of salt... But I've read that on that helicopter video they were tracer bullets (why you can see them so clearly) and they were being fired above not onto the crowd.

No idea if true or not.

I wonder if his jet can be refueled mid-air. Sounds like he's going to be flying for a while, calling multiple countries.

The only coup I remember well was the Russian one under Yeltsin, are there any similarities to the Turkey coup or is this one alot more violent and more military involvement?

At the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam a protest is going on. Several hundred Turks are there now and they've attacked a news crew who had to flee the scene.

Why? That's crazy. Is it reported that they support the coup or not?

As worrying as some recent reports look like, I'll try and keep up hopes for a secularist win to the bitter end. Only that has any chance of getting that country back on its tracks.

Erdogan supporters commandeered a bus and drove it at high speed at the military. Just saw it now.
They were yelling Allah Oakbar and Bismillah...

If this stretches into a lengthy conflict, the Kurds will show their presence too and take advantage of the situation.

Or it might turn out in Syria 2 :ill:

Turkey already have the ****** situation of random blasts throughout the country. This won't help that one bit.

The army is going to tear itself into pieces, so it seems.

Yildirim issued a warning that any plane or chopper flying over Ankara will be shot down.

I hope all of our 'leaders' are now in a meeting, and are ready to take defensive measures should the **** hit the fan in the next days.
