For a moment I was afraid that would end horribly real quick. Let's hope they can keep their cool.. (CNN)

Apparently the helicopter that was shot down was carrying the leaders of the coup.

And the state television studio of the TRT is now being overrun by Erdogan supporters.

You can debate the rights and wrongs of Erdogan all day long but this is surely a great example of the power of the people.

It's shameful that so many people have fallen for Tiny Penis's brainwashing... either that, or they're just your generic hatebeards who would support anyone crazy enough to attempt to trump secularism.

You know what's really weird?

Nothing what so ever about this situation on my Facebook.

CNN's stream is god awful, constantly stuttering and it will shut off in 7 minutes for me because I don't have an account. Are there any better streams?

I wonder if there's more to this coup than we're seeing...
Turkey does have a very complex history of coups, counter-coups and coup conspiracies:
It's worth noting that in April, the Turkish high courts overturned the convictions of the Ergenekon trials on the grounds that the government failed to prove that the organisation actually existed. And here we are, three months later, with an attempted coup that has all the hallmarks of the Ergenekon conspiracy ...

Former CIA director Woolsey is reporting on Fox that the coup was so badly staged that it may have been a fake, staged by Erdogan in order to be put down and subsequently clamp down on reformers. A true conspiracy theory. :boggled:

Well I was wrong. There was nothing more to this coup. I agree completely, the worst coup ever that took place. Here I'm thinking I'm witnessing history, but it's nothing more than a footnote.

I'm surprised that sacking Erdogan wasn't the first thing they did. You can't really have a coup when the president is still in power/not hostage/living. I did hear though that they bombed his vacation spot awhile after he took off from there.

I'm surprised they didn't shoot him down over the water mid-flight, either.

It's not over yet, it seems

There are also reports of Navy submarines being spotted in Istanbul

Periscope link removed as it was getting very NSFW

Looks like there's really something going on at Istanbul
