In an attempt to separate people even more at my work, I have been moved to a PM work shift from 3 to midnight. Lucky for me, they have a policy that states that if you are asked to work an abnormal shift where the starting time is after 12 o'clock noon, you get a 5% premium on your salary. So I get to sleep in for a while and make a little extra money. I think I'm OK with that.

Monday - Friday?

The thing about those numbers is that several thousands of those people are not actually unemployed in the usual sense. Many of them have their jobs waiting for them when the quarantines lift & their businesses can reopen.
Unemployment Benefits
Who would be covered by the expanded program?

The new bill would wrap in far more workers than are usually eligible for unemployment benefits, including self-employed people and part-time workers. The bottom-line: Those who are unemployed, are partly unemployed or cannot work for a wide variety of coronavirus-related reasons would be more likely to receive benefits.

What if I’ve been advised by a health care provider to quarantine myself because of exposure to coronavirus? And what about broader orders to stay home?

People who must self-quarantine would be covered. The legislation also says that individuals who are unable to get to work because of a quarantine imposed as a result of the outbreak would also be eligible.

But that is a caveat, because can we actually work out which businesses will survive? and if the position is still there, because of reduced demand as not everyone will have money on the other side of this to do regular economy things.

That's a question for the future. For now, not all of those people filing for unemployment benefits are actually unemployed. The new bill specifically expands to allow such people on it that normally wouldn't be.

The virus hates heat and dies if it is exposed to temperatures greater than 80°F (27°C). Therefore hot drinks such as infusions, broths or simply hot water should be consumed abundantly during the day. These hot liquids kill the virus and are easy to ingest.
If this was true, would the human body kill the virus with its normal temperature of around 37°C?

On balance there are many people who don't show in the unemployment figures who are nonetheless unable to work.

And the second!

Ewww. You can't pay me to sit on a public toilet, much less lick it!

What's even more messed up is people like my roommate who got approved but can't receive benefits cause the office is closed to turn in the papers that they want.

We have noticed that viruses such as SARS, MERS, H1N1, etc have been in the (distant) news for the last number of years. Finally the whole globe has been affected in a big way by the latest novelty in viruses. We are told that we must prepare for yet another epidemic of yet another new virus. Is this something new and different that has the potential to change anything significant about human life on Earth?

Suppose it's really true that we are in an Age of Virus epidemics much as once we were in an Industrial Age, Atomic Age or Information Technology Age. If so, what are the implications for the following:
- personal liberty and freedom
- globalization and open borders
- human rights
- income equality
- populism
- democracy
- authoritarianism
- climate change
- religious belief systems
- artificial intelligence
- exploration of the Moon and Mars
- mass gatherings for sporting events such as football and auto racing
- general standard of living
- what else?
