Not really... we are only a few steps away from seeing the country in the hands of Priti Patel. God help us.
Army checkpoints on every street.

Yes I know. I asked the origin of the message and was told it was downloaded and translated from a Spanish medical facility. It's probably hogwash so I'll delete it and note the reason
I'm not asking you to defend the material. My question was asked as a hypothetical in case what seems logical to me is actually not. I don't specifically expect you as an individual to know the answer, it was just in case anyone knew anything I may have missed.

I see some essential workers are getting raises while my wife who is a front line Nurse gets nothing but two extra hours on her shift. If the Canadian government really wants to help us then stop taking 30% of our paychecks away with income tax.

How long until those airlines bring those employees back? Are we traveling in force in August? October?
Those who took voluntary LOA are guaranteed their position upon return, at least for Delta. That's why I would not put stock into those numbers, especially those from large corporations, who are expected to survive the this episode.

Your wife is on the frontline of the fight against the virus & should get all the support possible ... but surely you realize that the money the Canadian government takes in taxes is what is used to pay her?

The nurses should certainly be recognised - are they getting discounts in shops, health-worker-only shop opening hours and free travel, for example? It's happening here albeit a little hit and miss.

So that's the Prime Minister, the Health Secretary and our Chief Medical Officer all self isolating... brilliant
But you didn't want them running the country in the first place! Some people are never happy!

And here I thought things regarding wildlife in China would be turning around.

I think this is the second time in 20 years they've made it illegal.

Oof that's bad. All our healthcare workers where I work are getting a pay raise effective immediately and they're all getting a bonus as well. They can submit a form and get 100% of their childcare reimbursed and they're going to get some extra vacation days to take once this is all over. In addition to all that, the community is providing free food, volunteer child care for those who can't find any, free rental cars to stay off public transport, and free lodging at local hotels if the healthcare worker wants to distance themselves from their family. I think pretty much every place is giving out free food if you show your hospital badge.

919 deaths in Italy in the last 24h.
We hoped they reached their peak given previous days data...
They are far to match an exponential raise rate, though. So we can still see a good news in the bad news.

Bad news from Italy. 969 deaths in the past 24 hours. The biggest death toll in any single day. Heartbreaking.

Tragic. :(

The number of cases overall has gone up by 5,959 which is 7.3%. The percentage increase does seem to be stabilised around that level, hopefully that's a good sign at least (fingers crossed).

In Hamburg there's tones of people outside. Most close to their homes but still. Lots of kids running around, people running, cycling, in roller blades, etc.

Sight of the day though: a young couple leaving their home (with presents and heart shaped balloons at the door), dressed as if they were gonna get married that day. They were just holding hands and walking around the neighborhood. I saw them again 1h later by the river, still on their own. She carried a small bokeh of red flowers on her free hand. He had an orange bow tie and wore light blue. It made me stop and think. They probably missed the big party and ceremony with all their friends and family but, on the other hand, had quite a unique day.

...One of the downsides to being "locked down" at home is the internet speed slowing down to a worm's pace. I need a speedy connection for my work, but that's proving to be impossible atm. And because of the slow connection, can't even play online games, too.

One more reason to hate this damn virus, then.
This is something I don’t understand, internet speeds slowing down, and I’ve read that some places on are bandwidth restrictions.

I get that more people are at home and using the internet from home....but what about all the business that are shut down and not using the internet?

As someone who has an irregular work schedule and spends a lot of time on the internet during all times of the day, typically you don’t see any change in internet performance except from maybe midnight to 7-8 AM when most people are sleeping. It’s not like you get any kind of better speeds mid day when people are at work, because they’re using the internet at work.

The nature of usage changed with confinement: watching a video consume way way more data than browsing. Download a video game too. Playing online games does not consume a lot of bandwith, though.

Edit:
Web Browsing: around 0.33 Mbit/s
Netflix UHD: up to 25 Mbit/s
Netflix HD: up to 5 Mbit/s
Playing Fortnite: around 0.03 Mbit/s (without streaming it...)

Often those businesses are still streaming just as much, and that's in addition to their employers now making connections from home to the office via virtual desktops.

Why would connecting to the internet from home use more bandwidth than connecting to the internet from the office?

That interesting, thanks. I wouldn’t have guessed that gaming was so light weight, compared to streaming a movie. I guess I would have assumed gaming was more intensive due to it being two-way traffic, as opposed to streaming which is just one way.
