Servers don't slow down because people try to hack them. They slow down because of more traffic than they are build to handle.

"Anon" were ddosing the servers some weeks ago, and that slowed them down for some hours, but that has nothing to do with this. Ddosing is something else. They stopped the ddos after a short while when they realized they where hurting the customers and not Sony them selfes.

But, this was discovered two months ago:

http://www.tech-mania.com/2011/psn-hacked-cfw-playstation-3-reveal-credit-card-info/

For two months all the hackers in the world have known that Sony made the net codes in a way that makes them as easy to hack as an atari if you first manage to get in, and that they keep a lot of sensitive information like credit card numbers and such. And i guess someone found a way to get in there finally.
Outside people was ddosing the servers untill the servers went offline. I still believe people outside Anon was ddosing the servers. I still believe strongly that the ddosing or what ever went on frequently for months, and it didnt stop untill now. And yes, other parts has also been involved in this activities as well. It like everyone wanted to give Sony a good beating.

It wouldn't do any good to change your PSN password now, as if the hackers actually acquired you're password, it's already taken.

The best thing to do is change the password to any sites or devices that had the same password as your PSN account, or are based on personal info like your birthday address etc....

I changed a couple of my passwords, and am checking my online banking every couple of hours, but other than that there is nothing else you can do but use some common sense about emails and letters you receive in the next few weeks....

I never use the same password for whatever services I use online. Same email yes but password no. I too am checking my bank account at least once a day. Soon as the psn is up I'm changing the passwords on all of my accounts. Gonna be annoying but you got to protect yourself. I just hope that once the psn is back up I can log in to my accounts. If I or anyone else cannot log in, then the hackers already changed it. Maybe I'm wrong on that part idk.

Nah, if you ddos anyone for the cause of damaging them, you are "anon". Anon is not a specific group of hackers, it's more of an idea. But the ddosing only went on for a day and everyone stopped as they realized they were hurting the PSN users. But what has happened havet got much to do with anonymous...

Everyone needs to stop and think about something. If they stole ALL of the personal information that PSN contains, think of how much info they have. More than likely we are talking about a small group of hackers here, so are they really going to be able to use all of it?

Probably not. Change your passwords, yes. Don't worry about anything else. More than likely your bank and/or credit card company will cover any fraudulent charges should they arise. (not likely)

Agreed, precautions are good to take. But this is not the breaking of the seal for Apocalypse like some are proclaiming...

Playstation is only a small part of Sony's overall business, but it appears the markets aren't to happy with Sony overall and this business with PSN can't be helping much. I'm happy my moneys not invested in them.

On a more relevant note. I'm taking a punt, based on the 0 knowledge I posses, PSN back on Saturday 30th April.

True. I will bring the apocalypse on myself if I find that my cc was used by the hackers lol. Highly unlikely but you never know. C'mon Sony, hurry up already so we can change our passwords lol. :yuck:

How can you know that the anon that according to you arent any specific group stopped? How do you know that other people didnt proceed to ddosing the servers? As far as i know, the servers had been screwed up, and i hope Sony intend to update the server performance aswell, when they doing their maintenance. But i doubt, we will probably get a message one week after saying "servers offline, due to maintenance, server performance upgrade". As a whole picture, Sonys servers didnt perform good, thats it. And it has to be fixed.

I know thanks to my amazing gift - the ability to use google.

Removed - it has an expletive in the title. Post it as a link. Don't embed it - and I've removed this from your posts three times now. Not impressed.

Oh, ok. Sorry, noticed it now the first time. Thanks for the heads up. ;)👍

"...Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity passwords and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained..." Nice Sony, you guys are the kings! :dopey:👍

If i get charged for purchases (f.e. a Gucci bag in Mayland, a pump gun in Oklahoma or a massage stick in Timbuktu), you can pay for it. Plus the costs for the lawyer & other expenses. :sly:

Really a massive image damage for Sony. 54326:1 for the hackers.

Guys, Sony is just trying to scare all of you guys to think that Anonymous is an evil force. I doubt that Anonymous did ANY of that. Here how about all of you check this out:
anonymous%20copy.jpg

Also, here is the headline for their IRC chat room:

[#Opsony is over. Mission accomplished. #OpSony is not responsible for the current downtime of PSN. Whatever problems Sony have, they are nothing whatsoever to do with us. kthxbai. | DON'T ASK US IF THE PSN IS UP, WE DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT!]
[19:56] == OpSony3872 [OpSony3872@an-D1C2FD56.acanac.net] has joined #OpSony
[19:57] -AIBO- [#OpSony] #OpSony is not attacking the PSN and has not done so since at least two weeks ago. Whatever problems Sony have, they are nothing whatsoever to do with us. kthxbai.

They can always torrent it out. They did it with Gawker site login details.

For those wandering how this happened you may want to look at this. I'm not saying it's correct but it's a decent and turned out to be pretty accurate theory. The DDOS had nothing to do with this and had no effect on the hack these were 2 different events IMO.

So you are perfectly happy to accept information at face value from Anon but not from Sony?

Personally I'm equally sceptical of all sources of information, Anon have as much to gain by distancing themselves from this as Sony have in linking it to them.

If you are going to question your sources, then question them all, as currently you seem to be picking and choosing which one you are happiest with.

Scaff

I'm afraid that I cannot answer that because it will defeat the purpose of the whole "Anonymous" thing.

You may want to read this totally not anonymous document.

Mostly, for this part.
not anonymous document commonly known as the AUP
You will not knowingly post any material that is false, misleading, or inaccurate.

Part of that is backing up your claims with proof and evidence to support your side. If you can't it's best to leave your argument to yourself.

Anon is a collective thing, I've popped in IRC and other places and nothing has really been happening about the taking down Sony website (and coincidentally PSN) for a couple of weeks. If there's a small group doing this and they wanted to act on behalf of anon you would know about it.

Infact there is no way for Sony to distinguish if the hacker/hackers classify themselves as "anon" anyway.

Does everyone believe theese hackers want your pissy little cc's.Thats not what this is about at all. This is about pissed off people without jobs that are smart and once held good jobs with major companies. They are pissed that major corp are taking advantage of many things. If they want money they can get it.So i wouldnt worrie about your debit or cc card account with 50 smackers in it lol.

I didn't see this mentioned in the thread so far, but in an article at ArsTechnica, a hacker claims to have accessed how Sony's/PSN's servers handle credit card transactions. They use the HTTP GET method of transfer, prompting a user on another forum to post this concise explanation
Holy [expletive], they were transmitting CC information over HTTP GET? That's one of the dumbest [expletive] things I've ever heard.

For anyone not up on the topic, basically, while they might be communicating over secure channels, HTTP GET transmits data in the URL itself, and the data contained in the query string is not encrypted. If they had instead used HTTP POST, then the data they're transmitting would have been part of the request and encrypted, but using HTTP GET leaves all that data unencrypted.

For non-technical folks, sending CC data via HTTP GET over a secured connection is like sending someone a new credit card in a secured envelope that can only be opened using a thumbprint scanner set to recognize the cardholder's thumbprint, except that instead of putting the credit card in the envelope, they just taped it to the outside of the envelope.

That's just astoundingly dumb, if true.
Please note that the claim is unproven (as mentioned in the article).

But to the topic at hand: Yes, PSN being down really sucks. The fact that it needs rebuilding sucks even more, as it adds at least another week of downtime. Here's to hoping that Sony will be able to get the servers built and tested before May 7th.

Since psn has been down ive noticed myself getting more done around the house.I also have been spending more time with loved ones kids, wife, friends and other hobbies.I have more energy at work im not tired all day.Goota say I may be done with this **** not a threat just being honest.

Wow, the crap has hit the fan. This is a huge blow to SONY, I never thought the breach was this bad... Incredible.

I sure hope any private information wasn't collected by the culprits, otherwise SONY could get into trouble.

:scared:

So hackers steal information from millions of user, actually that is a lot of hate, specially when they can be legally prosecuted in the countries where Sony has branding and legal affiliations, those hackers will be found, after all they close PSN to check all the entry ip proxys, searching ip and entrances like hunting dogs, imagine the legal prosecution against them.

In any case,a lot of people will claim "they cannot be found without static ip's",the thing is that they probably already found the entry proxys, and the dynamic ip's so is a matter of time.

I believe that other online services or Microsoft could be behind the attack, anonymous aren't stupid hackers, and they aren't interested into personal information from users, they probably target high Sony employees, but to go into average users, well there is something else that is involved.

As far as I see it,Sony made some strategic moves(not "move",that is rubbish),but they create a whole company and subdivision for online services, that, will become a competitor to the stablish windows live services,so coincidence?

This is actually a pretty insightful perspective. When I was doing the U.S. GT Academy I probably wore myself out too much also. I slowed down after the academy, but still kept going at GT5.

This break is actually somewhat welcome, for the reasons you mentioned. I may not find myself playing nearly as much going forward simply because I lost a lot of momentum.

As an aside, what are you people more worried about... your credit card information being stolen, or that your Bob's could lose any unclaimed prizes from online racing? Personally, I'm more worried about my Bobs (I think I had over $1 million credits unclaimed!):nervous:
