You can stop trolling this thread now.

Sony's only time frame for PSN going back up was "before the end of the week." How about you show me where someone, who wasn't speculating, said when PSN will be up?

Again, go get some sun.

Now your information is incorrect, Sony haven't said anything like that.

If you think I'm trolololling, re-read the whole of this thread and all of the Sony blogs, all the CORRECT information is there. It's not fair for people (you included) filling this thread with dodgy info.

As for getting some sun? What would you know?

Whereas all your posts have all the info you would ever need? Making posts like the ones below help no one. 💡

Photoshopped lol

Why do people say anything?

This information is incorrect,

I know it's a slim reality but I'm hoping that the psn is back up today because we have a race series every Wed night. Didn't race last week so I'm itching to get back online. I am just hoping that the outage did not cause people to lose interest in the series we got going. That would be a shame.

lol @ mod post. pwnd

PS3 FAT died, i got a slim but i need the PSN to authenticate my savegame!!! thats sucks!!

I need this!!

Or the e-mail account used:

Sony
As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data.

And again, you can verify it through the e-mail on that account!

SuperDave512
The layoffs were not a response to the attack. They were announced over two weeks before the attack.

The possible scenario is that a disgruntled employee (or employees) launched the attack or passed on information to others that assisted in the attack.

Ah, of course. *hides*.

I don't follow. If it's a GT5 issue, all you need to do is create an account on the new machine with the same PS3 login name as on the old machine then, when PSN comes back in the next couple of days, go to "Sign Up for Playstation Network", select "Use Existing Account", validate the account by the e-mail you're sent and your savegame (if backed up) will work.

But then if this is a GT5 issue, why are you posting in the PSN Outage discussion thread?

Because i need the PSN to authenticate my savegame, i made the new account with old same name, copy the backup savegame and GT5 says me that is from other user, researching in the net i found that i need connect to PSN to link my account and then the savegame.

edit: without PSN i have to start again GT5

No you don't:

Unless you're massively impatient and have to play GT5 right now - in which case, start a new save on a different account and do the above when PSN comes back, like I said.

This is still a GT5 issue and nothing to do with the PSN outage.

Patrick Seybold stated the following in the comments section of the US PlayStation Blog in reference to the password reset.

"Those security questions will not be used. As an added layer of security, the password can only be reset on the hardware in which it was created, or through a validated email confirmation. If necessary, Customer Service representatives have alternative methods of validating accounts, but the primary means will be through the console on which the account was created."

This implies you must be on the same "hardware". But only Sony knows for sure at this point. We will all find out soon enough.

Some more tidbits on the breach from the WSJ this morning.

"At least some of the attacks came from a Malaysia-based server, a person familiar with the matter said, though it wasn't clear if any of the hacking was actually done from there, or whether only the server there was used."

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703834804576301390633143966.html

CNET has an article this morning questioning why Sony's CEO Howard Stringer has remained silent on this whole issue.

"But after Monday's news that 25 million more Sony customer accounts had been stolen delivered yet another blow to the company, it's becoming rather awkward that Stringer has yet to speak up."

We are talking the same, unless the PSN comes back i cant resume my game.

yes.. I've been thare before. You need to "authenticate" your username in order to use the old save game in a new machine. To do that, the new PS3 would need to connect to PSN.

Be patience, mate

We are talking the same, unless the PSN comes back i cant resume my game.

Which is still a GT5 gamesave issue and not a PSN issue. Aside from the fact that, because your gamesave was on an account with a PSNID associated to it, you need PSN to restore your PSNID ro resume your game, it has nothing to do with the PSN outage. It's a GT5 issue, just as much as not having access to the Seasonal Events or Online Car Database are GT5 issues.

You can still play GT5. Due to a change of consoles you can't play your original gamesave right now, but you can still play GT5 and when PSN comes back you can resume your original gamesave. There is, simply, not a problem here.

Sonys chief information officer, Shinji Hasejima, made a statement at the Tokyo press conference in reference to the PSN security flaw.

“The vulnerability [of the network] was a known vulnerability, one known of in the world. But Sony was not aware of it... was not convinced of it,” he said.

Has anyone heard anything new aside from the May 2nd blog update? I've heard rumors it may be up by the 6th, but no one can provide hard proof.

I'm suffering from PSN withdrawl and I really need to race online again. =\

No information is better than giving people FALSE information, besides, I wouldn't have had to mention it if this other guy didn't think it's OK to have a pop.

i probably played gt5 almost everyday since the day it came out. started building up a and b spec then ended up playing only online. it was definitely addicting.

i havent played since about 2 days after psn went down. ps3 hasnt been turned on as well. feels weird but now i am used to it lol

i couldnt keep up all the time, but any news yet on when approx. PSN will be back up?

Chris

This is why this thread exists. If there's no new information, there will be no new information posted.

Remember this PSN server pic from the other day?

Here is a better description of what that actually represents.

"There are three layers, he said. At the front, a web server. Behind this, a web applications server. Behind it all, a database server that contains the personal information."

“There are firewalls installed in between each server,” Hesejima said.

“Only the minimum necessary authorised information only is communicated between each one,” he said.

“The breach was detected as a ‘normal transaction’, so it was not detected by any firewall. A certain command was sent… it was a very skilful approach… and the manipulation [of our network] was able to be done externally. So we were not able to detect it from the outside”.

PSN:How it was breached

If you haven't, you should google things like 'root key' and 'rebug'. As I've said in this thread already, this has been known well before psn being brought down. You could view yt vids made before April in fact.

It could be argued they were loosing more while psn was up and vulnerable.

Interesting.

Patrick Seybold - Sony US Blog
Sony's Response to the U.S. House of Representatives

Today, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce held a hearing in Washington, DC on “The Threat of Data Theft to American Consumers.”

Kazuo Hirai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sony Computer Entertainment America, submitted written answers to questions posed by the subcommittee about the large-scale, criminal cyber-attack we have experienced. We wanted to share those answers with you (click here).

In summary, we told the subcommittee that in dealing with this cyber attack we followed four key principles:

Act with care and caution.
Provide relevant information to the public when it has been verified.
Take responsibility for our obligations to our customers.
Work with law enforcement authorities.

We also informed the subcommittee of the following:

Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack.
We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named “Anonymous” with the words “We are Legion.”
By April 25, forensic teams were able to confirm the scope of the personal data they believed had been taken, and could not rule out whether credit card information had been accessed. On April 26, we notified customers of those facts.
As of today, the major credit card companies have not reported any fraudulent transactions that they believe are the direct result of this cyber attack.
Protecting individuals’ personal data is the highestpriority and ensuring that the Internet can be made secure for commerce is also essential. Worldwide, countries and businesses will have to come together to ensure the safety of commerce over the Internet and find ways to combat cybercrime and cyber terrorism.
We are taking a number of steps to prevent future breaches, including enhanced levels of data protection and encryption; enhanced ability to detect software intrusions, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns; additional firewalls; establishment of a new data center in an undisclosed location with increased security; and the naming of a new Chief Information Security Officer.

We told the subcommittee about our intent to offer complimentary identity theft protection to U.S. account holders and detailed the “Welcome Back” program that includes free downloads, 30 days of free membership in the
PlayStation Plus premium subscription service; 30 days of free service for Music Unlimited subscribers; and extending PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited subscriptions for the number of days services were unavailable.

We are working around the clock to have some PlayStation Network services restored and we’ll be providing specific details shortly. We hope this update is helpful to you, and we will continue to keep you posted as we work to restore our network and provide you with both the entertainment and the security you deserve.

It could be argued they were loosing more while psn was up and vulnerable.

They will also be required to refund/prorate PS Plus money to current subscribers who cannot get access to the PSN. I imagine that an outage for nearly a full month
(although not a huge amount) isn't pocket change.

Here is one of the pages by Sony answering questions.

Notice question six and its answer. The fact that the "information could be used to exploit systems other than Sony's" makes me think more on the lines of an inside job (fired workers) as opposed to the "rootkey" "rebug" exploits. I seems to be someone that knows the inner workings of servers very well.

So it WAS anonymous? What a bunch of liars. Saying they weren't behind this.

Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack.
We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named “Anonymous” with the words “We are Legion.”

Strange how that is mixed into a statement reguarding psn as they have said soe is not connected to psn.

I think it's something completely different.

Sony says it doesn't want to release how the hack happened so similar infrastructures don't get hacked? Rather than make the information free and public so other similarly unsecure infrastructures have the obligation and urgency to upgrade as PSN has?

Yes, Sony. It's called transparency you bloated corporate slime.

It's like saying the U.S. Government doesn't want to divulge the details of the 9-11 attacks so other countries don't get attacked by terrorists.

The on-going investigation is the ONLY legitimate reason not to divulge information such as this. And even that's a slippery slope.

At the beginning of this I wasn't one of those people who were quick to jump ship. I gave Sony the benefit of the doubt. However, their treatment of this issue is so disgusting I think I need to shower and consider going full-time PC gaming. I'm beginning to lose faith in platform gaming, and sony is acting like it's some inefficient government body that needs months upon months to come up with documented answers to other government bodies' questions, they need to conduct full investigations before they come up with valid excuses for their decision-making process, to admit they were had. What a bunch of politicians their CEOs should run for some elected position. No, Sony, you're an independent company and your response to your customers should not resemble government proceedings in its sluggishness.

They're like a kid trying to hide the broken vase so their parents don't know they had a party, and will only own up to it if their parents find it.
