Edit : this was removed, i removed the one swear word and abusive comment and piracy discussion. Fair enough scaff.

Fixed.

Now it is. If you are going to make a public point about moderation then at least be accurate and honest, after all the staff do still have access to the deleted posts.

Its likely to be more than 77 million PS3's, given how many people including myself lost their PS3 Fat to the YLOD.

According to Sony, http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/110415_e.html they've sold just over 50,000,000 PS3s worldwide. However, just to clarify, the 77 million figure has nothing to do with the number of consoles sold. That's the number of PSN accounts which were compromised. Consider that some people have multiple accounts or there are multiple accounts per family. And there are others, believe it or not, who never sign up for the PSN and never take their PS3 online. There's no direct correlation between the number of PS3s sold and the number of users compromised.

Also I agree with you sk0pe, 1 month free PSN+.. wow I'm so grateful for sony to give me 1 free month when my name and address and potentially CC number is in the hackers hands... I totally appreciate 1 month of PSN+ when I could potentially face some serious issues of having to clear my name when bad credit starts coming in and I receive debt letters etc.

I'm not happy about it either. So of more importance to me than the Playstation Plus access is the year of free identity theft protection Sony is offering. While this doesn't absolve them of any liability for what happened or may not prevent any current illicit activity taking place right now, it's certainly a step in the right direction and I think it was a smart move to offer this. Strange that you missed this link: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/05/sony-to-offer-psn-users-free-identity-theft-protection-for-one-y/

Also ( with some google power ) The fact that it's been reported that :

A. they were using out of date security software
B. None of the information stored on their servers were encrypted
C. They refused to spend money to protect its customers in order to ( IMHO ) project
higher profit margins at the end of the financial year.

Does not surprise me in the least, I mean think about it, I would not be surprised if the Japanese Government in some way or another, Told large corporations to pay additional taxes in order to help rebuild

If you've been following this thread, than you've no doubt already seen that point A is patently false, point B is misleading and not factually accurate either. And point C is at least debatable.

As for the whole thing being a big conspiracy by big Japanese corporations and the Japanese government, I won't even comment.

Why JJ?! :P
That is the more interesting part of the thick conspiracy plot...:lol:

Didn't you know, this whole PSN outage ties in somehow with Elvis, UFO's and man never going to the moon.

So it's only 50 untill you want it to be 77?

I was trying my hand at being overly sensationalism, too.

The ps3 browser is lame but that does not have anything to do with porn. Are you sure people disabled the psn because of this?

To be honest, I've lost track of why the PSN is down at this point.

People were mad at Sony because Sony disabled the OtherOS feature.
People were mad at Sony because Sony tried to stop Geohot from broadcasting some sort of universal PS3 security passcode key all over the internet.
People were mad at Sony because Sony put rootkits on CDs.
People were mad at Sony because someone they know owned a Sony product (tv/walkman/camera/whatever) that stopped working 1 month after the warranty expired.
People were mad at Sony because they saw a movie that wasn't that good, and wasted all that money for the full movie theater ticket prices and bought popcorn and everything. Sony was mentioned somewhere in the credits, and the pop was flat, too.

One day, a bunch of these mad people got together and decided to bombard the Sony PSN servers with half-open connection requests and the like to the point where the servers stopped working.

A lot of people who weren't involved with the bombardment wanted to play their video games online and couldn't because the PSN servers stopped working (see above), so they got mad at the people who were more mad at Sony than they.

The first group of people stopped their attack on the PSN servers out of the kindness of their hearts and went on to harassing Sony's executives, allowing everyone to enjoy their online gaming again.

A couple of weeks later, somebody sent some funky custom requests to the databases on Sony's PSN servers (and apparently some other servers related to online gaming) and the servers responded by telling this person everything it knew. Since 'everything it knew' includes all of Sony's customers personal information and credit card number hashes more people got mad at Sony (and/or people got more mad at Sony).

Sony doesn't want just anyone to be able to go into their servers and access everyone else's data so they took their servers off the internet and they are still trying to fix it so that doesn't happen anymore.

Watching free porn on your TV is just one of the three or so reasons people were mad about the first point.

Big lol, thats the best description of this sorry situation I've heard, Sony should use that as their next blog post LOL

And there is still the anti-Sony rhetoric going on...

People - if you truly hate Sony that much then cast your vote the "right" way...take your business elsewhere! Purchase another product! If anything, your claims/allegations/complaints possibly help Sony if you subscribe to the "no press is bad press" school of thought.

You will know it's back up when you log in to GTPlanet and you can hear crickets chirping in the background

You miss the point. There is no competition in the console market. PS3 has the best features.

Is this yours, then? :D

Patience is a virtue that seems like only about 1% of gamers can obtain

Very true. I think 3 weeks without even online matchmaking being restored is enough to try anyone's patience a little. Some people like to preach to others, which I don't think helps. That's just the world I suppose, there's always some high and mighty #$%$ out there.

I didnt miss the link, I just didnt see it viable as It's an often misconception that fraudsters drain a CC account in the same year that the data was stolen, More that they ( Apparently ) wait for a number of years before starting to milk the account for all its worth.

I haven't really exactly read through 70+ pages of this so I can't comment lol

A conspiracy theory is always interesting, Though unlikely.

Currently, We are all speculating as to why they got taken down so quickly and "Easily" and of course IF the corresponding reports are true that out of date software and unencrypted data were being implemented, then this is a huge punch in the guts to all of Sony's customers worldwide.

Agree'd, I'm not angry about PSN going down, In fact It's given me more time to get some of my Steam Achievements done on AVP 2010 and learn about bump mapping in order to modify the skins to be more... creepy? ( I'm still learning Pfft )

Anyway, Only thing thats ticking me off in all honesty is The length of downtime preventing my bobs from making me some hard cash aswell as enjoying some long races on multiplayer, Like when I hosted a RM 4 hour race on Nurburgring Nordschleife, I missed them race sessions I ran where the race would start at dusk, go through the night and back to dawn where the race would finish.

I don't buy that. After a number of years most of the cards will have expired or have been blocked. It makes more sense to use them after a short period of time.

Hence why I put in brackets "apparently" ;)

It's reported that fraudsters don't use the details straight away but after a short time ( up to a year or more ).

I'm not in any way saying this is what happens, It's just reported as happening often when credit details are stolen.

Then why are you calling them facts?

How do you know it was quick and easy?

Lets all hope it'll be back by this weekend.

I would have hoped by now they would have given us some type of timeline. However, I think by them saying nothing, nothing will happen this weekend. Depending on where you are, there is less than 24 hours till the weekend. It isn't looking too good.

Yeah I'm not even gonna bother turning my ps3 on this weekend. If the psn isn't back up by Friday then it won't be up on the weekend.
