Bizarrely and totally unexpectedly, I managed to win on my first full attempt, after a couple of false starts (restarted after a collision, and outbraking myself on the 3rd lap). And entirely by luck rather than skill I think.
Used an Audi R18 TDI with a modified Praiano tune (0.5 camber all round, diff 7/12/20, slightly longer 6th gear, 85/90 FRH/RRH, -50 downforce front and rear). Logitech G27, no TCS, ABS 1, default the rest.
Started on RS, and struggled to keep pace with the lead 787B and Pescarolos. I was always +30seconds, just about able to maintain 1.34/1.35 lap times, which seems pretty poor against some times here. Barely hitting 200mph on the banking - I've noticed several times now a large disparity in the game between PP and bhp/weight, with some cars able to run much higher power and lower weight for the same PP. Pitted just after halfway more for fuel than tyres, put on RS again - soon thought that was a mistake, although sitting in the pits meant by the time I rejoined I had less than half the race to run, just 10 mins. Later narrowly missed colliding with an XJR that spun at the bus stop exit. I thought I was miles behind after the stop (40 seconds at one point), but I plugged away and soon I found myself with a 20 second lead with about 3 minutes to go. But I was running a little short on fuel and tyres.
On the second to last lap I short-shifted constantly to manage wheelspin (TC was off!) and fuel use; but my rear right quickly plummeted from 3 to 2 to 1 - it felt like I had a puncture, the car was suddenly very twitchy and so unstable. I limped, crawled, like treading on eggshells around the last lap, it was painful. The rear right was on 0, I was getting wheelspin even in 4th. Each split my lead dropped away, to 15, then 10, then 7 seconds. Another lap would cost me the race. I lifted off on the banking a couple of times to make sure the timer hit zero, which mercifully it did exiting the banking. I didn't even look at the fuel gauge until I got to the line, not much left! How on earth I got that thing across the line I don't know, but somehow I had done enough to win. I don't think I could repeat that if I tried!
