My definition of a sighting is something spotted in the public realm - a track day unquestionably does not count. Nor does a dealership or a closed parking lot.

You go to a race track expecting to see nice cars just like you go to a Ferrari dealership expecting to see Ferrari's.
so if i was going to the race track to see nice cars why didnt i go to the Supercar Sunday event instead of SIDC trackdays and ones run by VAG/Rover tuners, can you read my mind now?
i dont go to see nice cars i go because i want to catch up and have a chat with people i know or have a similar interest in the cars, how they perform etc, hell i spent 4 hrs on saturday in an evo 5 and an evo 7,hardly would some people would class as "nice cars".

would that mean if someone was going to monoco they couldnt claim them as spots as you would expect to see "nice cars" same with dougs valet spots,he goes there cause he knows the cars will be there more than what i know whats gonna turn up at knockhill, therefore his dont count then?

agreed, however I don't mind seeing any of the above posted here as long as the photographer acknowledges where it's been taken, as far as what qualifies as a good spot, that's really a matter of opinion and one man's tr... well you know the saying.

It doesn't matter what event you go to. You can say you're going to catch up with friends, but the point is, you still take pictures of supercars you KNOW will show up eventually.
I could say I go to Lamborghini to catch up with the guy I know there and ask him how it's going. However, if I take a picture of something like a Saleen S7 and post here, the same thing applies.

His sightings are actually out on the street though, a place people don't go expecting to see fine automobiles. People who go to a race track do however. Monaco is the same way. 99% of the people who go there do not go there expecting to see exotics. They go there to spend vacation or gamble. The only reason there's so many exotics is because all the citizens have million dollar incomes.

And please, do not give us that, "I don't know what to expect at Knockhill." From what you've posted, it's very obvious anyone can expect a nice vehicle to show up, esp. as you like to tell us about you riding shotgun in various sports cars like the GT3 RS in debates.

Strong agreement. I would never consider a track / dealership / auto show spot to be a true sighting (most would agree) but I'm not at all saying I don't like seeing the photos, and I hope Holdenhsvgtr keeps posting them!

In the past I used to only count my sightings in places where people wouldn't "expect" to see exotic cars, but that would eliminate valet stands, nice restaurants, and most of the United Arab Emirates.

My new definition is in public only. But as stated above, even though I don't consider your photos true "sightings," they are much appreciated as always. :D 👍

sorry but you have no idea why i go to these events, you cant read my mind,in fact if you go to my photobucket knockhill account you will see i hardly pay attention to supercars,in fact if you ask several members on here they will tell you i have no interest in supercars bar a couple (599 and the gallardo) as i find supercars boring, obvious and dull hence why most of the cars i will take pictures of will be sports/super saloons and i DON'T know what will turn up unless you know something i dont about my own mind? The only people that do know who will turn up is the people who work at knockhill as they will have the entry forms, even then some people might not turn up so i can say for the record i do NOT go to knockhill to see nice/super cars but then again something might be lost in translation there that means i say one thing but it means another

if i was to stand outside the access road to knockhill and took pictures of the cars arriving would that class as a "true" spot?

whats wrong with that? do you really wanna hear about me riding shotgun in a GT2x SEAT Leon or a 111R or a MK2 Golf with a S3 engine or Skoda fabia vRS etc?

no people would wanna hear about the sport cars and for the record i didnt go up and annoy people for the passenger rides except from the gallardo as i was in a rush to catch the last bus back to glasgow and i had already asked a few people (who drove seat leons btw) if they could but werent able to and as i had been taking to the gallardo own i asked if he was heading that way and he was able to give me a lift. With the murcielago ride the owner knew a friend of mine and i was asking how it was around the track and he offered to take me out in it and show me,which you arent going to say no to.

With the 993 Turbo and GT3RS those guys are regulars at trackdays so ive spoke to them at a few of them when they turn up and have asked if i wanted to go out for a few laps and well its rude to no isnt it ;)

That's essentially the same as standing outside a car show for when the cars leave. So no.
So how about this theory: If someone finds a nice car, and they take a picture of it, why not post it in this thread. Who cares where they saw it?

since you both seem to be arguing to the same end (i.e. pictures that aren't necessarily a "spot" are still allowed) why don't you agree to disagree so we can continue with the car porn mmmmkay?

Rules are rules maybe?

And why does it matter?
Saying the rules need to be enforced simply opens yourself up for supposed rule violations. Why does it matter, anyways? Are we competing for photos? Because if we are, why is there a Scavenger Hunt thread?
So, once again, who cares? Naturally a spot on a street is cooler than a spot in a dealer, but if the car was worth taking a photo of than who cares?

how does it open myself up to rule violations? my pictures are within the rules (trackdays are allowed) noones competing for photos but a few members have stated(along with the rulesif you fancy checking them out) that dealer pictures arent allowed.if you dont like the rules and cant follow the ones for this thread whats stopping you from setting up your own "dealer" picture thread?

*McLaren* quite clearly explained that the logic with which you defend the rules is just as easily turned against you. Do I need to point it out to you? You know, taking pictures of privately owned vehicles where you know where they will be.

So, I ask once again: Who cares, and why does it matter? Serge posted pictures of some nice cars that happened to be at a dealer, nearly all of them in private ownership.

please do as my pictures have been within the rules of the thread.

Dude. Dealer photos are not considered a 'spot' in this thread unless the car is insanely rare. However your spots are getting better (as in faster and rarer cars), so keep trying :)

Yeah, enough with the dealer pics. lol

Yeah, you have a good point there. If this thread is about the dealer thread, then there would be no fun in taking photo of cars anymore. The one Doug did with the Bugatti Veyron and the Maserati MC12 was just plain awesome! 👍 It keeps everyone inspired to take more shots like those. If i was just taking photos of dealer cars, you wouldn't be surprised if i had photos of Lamborghinis, Porsches, Ferraris, Maseratis, etc.

Agreed [with Toronado]. A while back I had a bunch of photos of Saleen, Roush and SVT/Shelby Mustangs, and while they certainly were in a dealership, they were rare enough where I thought it was worth posting.

Thats up to your own personal discretion of course, as even I like to see photos of the new arrivals at the dealerships. It lets me know whats there and whats not, and if its in "______" *insert city name here, that may mean it will be near you soon.

Then again, I'm also the guy who sees those really odd, hard to find versions of otherwise common cars. Last night I nearly pooped my pants because I found a Beretta GTU (yes, I'm that much of a GM nerd), but it was too dark to take photos. But at least to me, that would have been worth a post.

===

On that note: If anyone finds an Isuzu Impulse, let me know. I've maybe seen one once in my life, and I'd love to see one again! Much like Doug's list of "Must See" exotics, that damn Isuzu is on mine as well...

please do as my pictures have been within the rules of the thread.
You don't get why the rules of the thread were laid out, which is your problem. You know, taking pictures of privately owned vehicles where you know where they will be. Yeah, that applies just as much (if not more) to a track meet as it does to dealer parking lots. One could argue that most of Doug's photos are disallowed based on that same logic, and pretty much all of ChaserTRD's photos.
You also seem to think that the rules are ironclad, when in fact they are merely guidelines.

these people seem to
To which I have *McLaren*, Serge.D (who, by the way, posted pictures of privately owned vehicles that only happened to be in dealer lots), YSSMAN, and me who don't care. And you still haven't explained why you think it matters.

So, once again, why does it matter? And why does it matter to the degree that you have started the argument over? Surely if it irks you that much, you could complain to a moderator.

YSSMAN

Seriously? Which one? There are a bunch of second gen (and a single first gen) ones that are within a few miles of where I live. I wasn't aware they were seriously rare.

BT-> On my way back to Vegas coming from Phoenix, on US-93 N I saw something.

-> It was a fleet of Fords with five of those carry huge trailers and as I look closely, I saw five 2009 Ford F-150's all camo'ed up in one truck stop area, and all of them are Crew Cab models. Unforunately I was unable to take a pic travelling @ 80 mph, plus there was a bunch of thugs 'round the place. :indiff:

I was thinking we may want start archiving the pictures in this thread sooner or later.

Good idea. I was thinking this too, but it slipped my mind every time I came on to post a car picture. Is there anyone here with the time and patience to do this? I can supply a decent amount of pics.

The archiving sounds like an interesting idea. I would have the patience to do it, but would never have the time.

And for the record, I don't really care where pictures of cars are taken, especially if the vehicle being photographed is interesting, has some kind of interesting story, rare for the area, etc. I just like to see pictures of cars.

Can they all be archived? Some of them have come from photobucket, imageshack, facebook, among other places... I imagine many of the links are long past dead these days.

In the last couple days:

b7-112607.jpg

Extremely rare Alpina B7.

phantom-112607.jpg

Phantom on Texas plates.

Today:

r8-112807-3.jpg

r8-112807.jpg

That's my second R8 spot. Honestly, this is an absolutely beautiful car. It's unmistakably-styled and quite aggressive - the color and wheels are perfect. And that stupid side slab actually goes well with the design. This particular one was sold at the dealer where I get my car serviced - the other day I went in with a broken brake light and it was sitting in the showroom. Glad to see it's being driven.

The same dealer already has the new RS4 convertible (in black!).

Alpina probably deserves a reward for curing their 7-series of the Banglebutt disease.

It's just the facelifted 7-series with a rear spoiler - Alpina did very little to the rear end. What really makes it good is the ten-zillion spoke wheels - they compliment the car quite well (so well, in fact, that BMW now offers similar wheels, and my false B7 sightings have increased infinitely).

But what amazes me is how the rear looks different with the wing deleting that awkward curve at the top...

And the rims. Beautiful

1) Serge is not the only who's done that. How about the fellow who was posting pictures of that SLR & Maybach and was working for some company?
And 2) You have absolutely NO right to say anything as we see you constantly posting pictures from the race track in here.
.

1. I was with a company for a week who looked after them. I didnt have alot of idea what was going to be in the barn, but I knew they had a maybach fleet and a couple of SLR's. It wasnt exactly a public dealership dealership, But a secret storage location full of exotic jems, from Alvis to Bristol to Lotus to Maybach.

2. Holden's track spots may be slightly dubious, but Knockhill isnt exactly a world renowned international race track type thing.

Except for when there's an unofficial car rally occurring, right? ;)

I don't recall the last time there was a car over £50,000 when new shot for the Scavenger Hunt thread (I think Joey has a CLS this week but aside from that, nada). Our categories are somewhat broader - and the fun is to see how inventive people can be.

So, once again, who cares? Naturally a spot on a street is cooler than a spot in a dealer, but if the car was worth taking a photo of than who cares?

Personally, I find dealer spots boring - no matter what the car is.

The thread only has two rules. No dealers/dealer-sponsored events and take some photos. Can't be so hard, surely?

EXACTLY
Which means both Holden and my own spots are valid. Dealerships and manufacturer sponsored events are not. Argument over.
