Hey Hooligan -

Actually, the Esprit is just another of the wondrful conversions that Bob Straman out in California will do if you've got the cash.

If you haven't heard of this guy, he takes vehicles not sold as convertibles and, for less than $100,000 usually, he masterfully stabilises the body and ads a tasteful convertible top. He customised the Sultan of Brunei's Ferrari 456 "coupe" into a convertible (I believe the 456 is his specialty), and I remember hearing of one his more spectacular creations, a stock Range Rover 4.6HSE into a convertible (and two-door) Range Rover. He usually deals in super cars, though when the New Beetle came out, he advertised in upscale magazines that he could convert a New Beetle into a New Beetle convertible "Without a loss of trunkspace."

I think it's called Straman Coach or something stupid like that - plug 'Robert Straman' (I believe) into a search engine and you'll be surprised.

EDIT: It's Richard Straman. I'll post pictures.

Just some examples.

I'm not sure - it doesn't look like he does. Plugged his name into google and it came up with nothing significant.

hey hold on.

the 3000 gt spyder is already on the street,(i never seen in person) but i have a pic of this car in my mag ( that was a mitsubishi adv.)

Ahhh...that would explain it. A lot of the "upper cruster's" up here are bi-coastal, so I would imagine the cars go with them. Didn't cross my mind that it could be a conversion.

As for the Z4: I heard it's being tested in the US, since it's due for release soon (as in, it's not really out yet).

October 21 is when the first ne rolls off the line in South Carolina.

Man are you guys sure? Because I'm pretty sure I saw the blue BMW logo on the back of the car and it didn't quite look like the Z3. However, I could be wrong since the car was a dark color, a severe rainstorm had just passed through, and it was at night so my view wasn't terribly clear.

Ok, so it's old and nothing spectacular but still I like it! it's nice!... I see a jet black GTO twin turbo everyday in the school carpark. :D

It's entirely possible that you saw one. Demos at dealerships (for the dealers themselves) are run quite often. An earlier version of the Z4 was photographed during a test run out in California. I just don't think it was the actual owner driving either one. :)

Yeah, FuryX21 - plus, you're living in Atlanta, and they make them in Spartanburg. (Though they all run Georgia 'Distributor' tags so they evade taxes  )

Golden Oldies Weekend:

1957 Corvette Convertible: same gay baby blue as the sample at the NY Auto Show. Still, a '57 Vette is a '57 Vette, and last Saturday on the Taconic was as good a place as any to go cruising.

1966 Mustang Convertible: straight-up red; in a showroom in Cold Spring, NY. For a minute, I thought that I stepped back in time. Cold Spring is [almost] as 1955-Small-Town-USA as it gets, and this Mustang was sitting in a 2-car showroom, complete with vintage gas pumps out front (with the last numbers on the dial: 37 cents a gallon!). Closed on Sunday, of course, but next to it was...

1957 Thunderbird Hardtop: white, with some rust here and there. Vintage Vette, Mustang, and T-Bird...all I needed was a '69 Camaro SS to complete the weekend. :D

2003 Mercedes G500: silver; nothing really special about the car so much as the driver. Old client; had trouble with his stereo; followed him from the store in my car to his place, watching the silver paint glisten in the rain all the way there. Get there, and he says he just got this G500 and wasn't sure if it would fit in the garage. Just eyeing it, I say not really.... He says he'll try it, and that I should let him know if it won't make it. So naturally, I have to wave him off. He says to try and hold up the garage door. I think "Not gonna do it...not gonna do it...." He hits it -- by 2" -- stops, then goes further. He gets out, checks the roof, then backs out of the garage. Surprisingly, the stub antenna is still there...along with a couple of nasty deep scratches. He looks and says "Nah, nothing happened. It's fine!" I think, oh, yah; another tool buying the wrong car. :banghead:

Forced induction day:

Porsche 911/996 Turbo: silver, in Bedford. Damn they're rich up there, because no more than an hour later...

Porsche 911/996 Turbo: black, in Bedford. Like I said: stupid rich. :P

Mercedes C32 AMG: silver, of course. The AMG with the most potential, IMO. Lightweight, nice puffer, manual transmission...and it's just about US$50,000. Doable for me...someday.

Yesterday I was driving down one of the busiest streets in the area to go pick up Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. I pulled up to a traffic light and saw a classic blue w/ white stripes Viper GTS in mint condition. Believe it or not, but this is only the 2nd Viper I've ever seen (the first one was a black R/T with a caved in roof).

Coincidentally, it was in the same place where I previously had spotted a blue w/ white stripes Shelby Cobra about a month before.

Also, Saturday I saw a black NSX on the way home. Once again, I mistaked it for a Corvette from the side, as I have done in my previous 3 spottings of the NSX. Man those things are SLEEK!

Big list, but it's over 4 days:

Nissan 350Z: royal blue; just as I was getting onto the LIE in Queens, the beastie snuck by me and took the next exit. In all of 2 seconds, there was no mistaking it. Surprisingly, it does look better in person than on paper. Still doubtful about the V6....

VW Karmann Ghia Cabriolet: pale yellow; seen just 20 minutes after the Z. In great condition for a 30 year old VW.

Shelby Cobra Roadster: silver with black stripes. Could have been a kit; I only saw the top half peeking over the way-too-tall LIE divider (and just 30 minutes after the VW :) ).

Maserati Spyder: blood red; I guess some cars do look good with the top down at night. Watching this guy made me miss my exit off the LIE (heading back from LI ;) ).

Lotus Elan: just-lighter-than-Rosso red. A while back, I mentioned a "convertible Esprit". This is the car I saw, and this time it was no more than 20 miles from where I first saw it. It had to be the same exact car....

Porsche 996/911 Turbo: navy blue sparkly. Okay, is the Greenwich Porsche dealer having a fire sale on Turbos? That's 4 in less than 2 weeks; all different colors, so I know I'm not seeing the same one.

Mercedes ML55: silver; abused. At least it wasn't a G55.
