Gran Turismo 4 was the first game of the GT series to have a diesel car (BMW 120d '04).

Currently the technology of diesel cars is increasingly developed and is synonymous of high performance, in fact I live in Europe (Portugal) and have noticed that the market of diesel cars is growing faster, particularly with the increased of petrol!

In motorsport we have registered several diesel victory the example of Le Mans (Audi R10, Peugeot), WTCC (Seat Leon TDi), Dakar (Touareg) etc...

The Gran Turismo 5 as a fantastic driving simulator, in my opinion will have some diesel cars, since the characteristics of driving, torque, consumption etc. are totally different than the others cars.

what the opinion of the GTPlanet members about:

- Diesel road legal cars?

- The diesel in motorsport?

:D

Deisel engines are a SOP item in europe, so of course they should have them. americans will only recognise ones in Volkswagens, though.

I wonder if we should be totally evil, and suggest to KY that he finds a scarily still working american PASSENGER CAR deisel to scan in. then europe would know what we're talking about when we call deisel's POSes

I'd like to see diesels, sure. There are plenty of very, very good diesel engined cars and they'd be very representative of the European market in the game, and therefore a possible draw for European gamers, as well as any other gamers/car fans around the world who might be interested in, or even own a diesel.

That o good point!

Presently I have two cars and both are diesel, and I think like me we have many fans interested in diesel experience!

What diesels do you have? There are definitely some that should be in the game, I'm thinking the 2.7 V6 diesels in the Jaguar XJ and XF, definitely some VW diesels, maybe even Honda's 2.2 turbodiesel they fit to the Civic and Accord. Those are just a few that stand out as some very good engines. Oh, and of course BMW's twin-turbo 2.0 diesel, such as that in the 123d. 200bhp doesn't sound too shabby, and I bet the torque is massive too.

I have:

Opel Vectra GTS 2.2 turbodiesel '03
Opel Corsa Van 1.7 diesel '97

How easy are diesels to tune in real life?

The diesels cars are easy to tune, the principles are the same as a gas car basically: electronically, turbo or turbo pressure, injectors, intercoolers, air filter, exhaust etc ...

We only get a couple of diesel VDubs here but apparently with just a chip in them you can make them quite fast. A guy I knew when I was in the truck club back in the day had a chipped Jetta TDI with a couple of other goodies. I remember going for a ride with him once, we managed to beat a Corvette and on the highway he got it up to 155mph without a flinch. I never liked diesel cars until then.

I think they have a place in GT though and I would like to see them. Also it's almost a given that we will get the diesel Le Mans cars, but I would still like to see Jetta's and the like.

Modern turbodiesels are staggeringly easy to tune. A simple chip can take a 90bhp Mk4 Golf turbodiesel up to 130bhp, and people have chipped the 150bhp TDIs to 200bhp, again with little effort. There was a popular chip for the MINI One D that took it's fairly weedy 75bhp to 90bhp too, and some for more power than that. Obviously torque improves too (a lot), but the tuners always use power for the headline output.

And that's before you start changing turbos and things, just like you can with a turbocharged petrol car.

How easy are diesels to tune in real life?

Very. A variety of tuners offer kits for heavy-duty pickup trucks, and there are quite a few daily-driver trucks that put out over 1,000 lb./ft of torque and get close to 20 miles-per-gallon!

I own a diesel and so does my mom, so needless to say, the more diesels that show up in GT5, the better! I also wouldn't mind seeing more hybrids, fuel cells, battery-electrics and other non-gasoline vehicles, either.

And Sniffs, as long as they didn't replicate the real-world reliability (or lack thereof) of American passenger car diesels from the '70s and '80s, I'd love to have those included just for laughs, though a lowered Olds Delta 88 coupe with a fully-upgraded 350 diesel (with a turbo kit, perhaps?) would be pretty sweet...;)

L8: *smirk* I don't think they'll put the unreliability of our big block deisels in, but I would surely love to point at such and say "look, that THING is why Americans think deisels are crap that belongs in lorries!"

But maybe we can have this:

Audi R8 V12 TDi

Engine type: 5934cc, 12 cylinders, twin turbodiesel

Torque: 500bhp @ 4500rpm / 738 lb ft @ 1750rpm

Performance: 0-62mph: 4.2sec / Top speed: 186mph-plus

Release: 2010

The fact is diesel car show on diferents challeges and competition are better on fuel economy/power , but diesel car sound like a truck!LOL
Also diesel car are very good to drive through city and are soft on the drive , I drove an accord 2.2 i-CTDI and goes like a v8 in terms of soft run of drive.
I will preefer always a gasoline car ,only 4 the sound ...
But for sure will be diesel car on gt5 ,that will be interesting.

I've been playing with turbodiesels for years, and the ease of tuning is fantastic. A simple "chip" job... one that doesn't sacrifice reliability, sees a good 30% increase in power, versus your typical 10% for non-turbo gasoline engines. Turbodiesels are almost as modification responsive as gasoline turbos, and it's not unthinkable to make 200 bhp or more out of a 2 liter turbodiesel.

In a videogame, though, tuned up and put against a turbo-gasoline car on the same platform, the diesel will be handicapped in some areas, yet will have an advantage in others. The turbodiesel will always have more low-down torque... but the shorter rev range and lower peak power hurts. But if you can get the gearing right, your out-of-corner acceleration should counter the gasoline car's extra pull at the end of the straights.

In a fair fight, same suspension, brakes and everything (some new diesels have aluminum alloy blocks, so the weight penalty isn't a given anymore)... whoever is faster out of the corner has an advantage... it's no advantage to be faster into the braking zone unless you've had a very long straight to line up, pass the dieseler, and block his line into the corner. It'll be interesting, to say the least, to see what happens in GT5 online gaming when you factor diesels into the equation.

Hopefully they'll throw in the E320 Bluetec and its monster V6. I can't see why they wouldn't. I'd love to compare the in-game car to the real life version.

Would have to include the new diesels for the new Ford's. 100bhp, 1 litre, 3 cylinder, sound fun? Also got a 160bhp for a 1.4 in-line 4 iirc.

Absoutely there should be diesel cars in GT5, The Audi R10 TDI Race car.

exactly, and besides have diesel race cars, how about they give the BMW 120d touring car version driving mu Jutah Kleinschmied (Female German Race Driver)

Chris

It would be great to see more diesel cars in GT5.

Some cars for GT5 would be the new Audi R15 TDI (The new prototype), Peugeot 908 HY, and that Jag that Top Gear used to get around the 'Ring in less than 10 mins.

Modern diesels sound nothing like a truck. The only diesel I've driven recently was a Fiat 500 1.3 diesel and it sounded awesome, it really growled!

All the Fiat group diesels sound unusually good, my parents tested the 147 and 159 1.9 diesels recently and they had really rorty sounds. The 5-cyl 2.4 available in Alfas sounds even better.

That correct I have a 2.2 diesel (vectra GTS) and is sound very nice, in fact what you listen more is the turbo and is decompression.

:)

Yeah , modern cars diesel sound very good but ,look for example diesels of 2000 and older of that.Bmw , audi mercedes diesel engines always sound good.

I am not keen on diesels due to the noise and the fact that it is not petrol... LOL

I do however really like my Mothers boyfriends Audi A3 1.9TDi as it is really nice to drive and is very quick for its spec.

I wouldn't mind about 25 - 30 diesel cars, but would prefer the vast majority to be petrol.

they should have the Diesel option for cars which are or were sold with it just to have a choice.... i personally would chose Diesel most of the times because of the torque, im starting to like diesels more and more as theyre far from what they used to be.... theyre real performers now...
my dad has a 2.0TDi Passat with the DSG clutch.. so much torque compared to my 2.0 Celica obviously..... but even if it weighs like 400kg more and has almost the same hp the Passat wins due to instant acceleration... i gotta wait until i hit 5000rpm to feel much power, darn 2.0 NA..... but still love it.

Just strap a supercharger on, problem solved. Anyways my dad drives a 2.4 alfa 156 and it redlines at 5000 rpm. He can go from a standstill to 30 on gear 5 easy coz of all the torque.
