DiRT Rally Thread

Downloaded it tonight and I'm loving it! Just did a rally in the Mini @ Monte Carlo and was separated from second place by 0.007 seconds with 1 stage to go. Managed a pretty much perfect stage and won by 7 seconds! This feels like a proper successor to Colin McRae Rally 2.0

Hmm, is that a different scenario to DS3Tool? It can be confusing, people refer to BetterDS3 as an alternative to motioninjoy, but motioninjoy still needs to be installed and uninstalled in the process. Damage still done.
BetterDS3 is basically just a different UI, that's why you need MIJ. DS4Tool is tricking your PC into thinking you're using an XInput device. It's completely harmless.

DiRT Rally simulates air pressure, so vehicles will lose power and downforce as they summit Pikes Peak.

Seems people may still may not realise that there's a bug that resets degrees of rotation each time a race is started. There's an annoying to have to do, but very simple fix for it..... pause and un-pause. That's it.

If you use a G27/G25, you can use the Start+Select+Face Button degree selection instead of the Logitech profiler, and this bug won't happen.

This game is so rewarding at times, in the first championship, I placed first at Monte Carlo, and third at Wales. And the championship leader was dominating at Greece (he was 2nd at MC, and 1st in Wales). But in the very last stage in Greece, he had a massive stuff up, fell to third overall giving me the win, and I won the championship. I really got to grips with driving the Mini too, just struggling in those hairpins.

Does anyone else turn off all the HUD (except for rev counter)? I find it's easier because it reduces the pressure of knowing that you're behind in each sector and lets you focus just on driving and getting through the stage.

I turn off everything except the symbols for the notes. For some reason, turning down the engine volume does nothing yet, and the instructions are impossible to hear in the Stratos.

I'm really not enjoying the FWD cars. With the combination of them seemingly wandering aimlessly and unjustifiably across the track and the ffb deadzone around centre, I find that I'm having to micromanage my inputs, but not for any logical reason. RWD and 4WD are a completely different story though.

I haven't even seen the HUD. Any of it. I switched it all off the first time I loaded the game.

I've noticed that too, which reminds me... I also left the symbols on, I forgot. :P For the exact same reasons, with the same car. The Stratos has been my favourite to drive, followed by the RS200.

I'm running the dashcam view, so I can't see the actual interior. I sort of agree on FWD, I prefer RWD and 4WD, but the Mini is good fun on the faster sections in Greece. the understeer doesn't cause any issues at speed.

Also, what wheel settings are people running? I'm at 400 deg, no deadzone, full saturation and 3 for linearity (can change depending on car). Feels good to me (though it's a lot of work because the steering happens quickly. But it's good for reacting to things you didn't anticipate.).

I actually don't know how the HUD looks. I switched it off, completely, when I set up all the other options and never turned it on.

@Dragonistic I'm on a controller right now. It plays decently well. With it. Obviously there are a bunch of differences in the feel between this and say Dirt 3, but the steering is pretty well sorted, FFB seems to be working well. You should be fine playing on a pad :) Hope that's at least a bit helpful

Since my G27 is being "serviced" I've been playing Dirt Rally with a 360 controller, it works quite well but I've found you need to be careful to not steer too much because then you understeer quite badly because, of course, the tyres just start scrubbing across the direction you're moving. It's been a long time since I played a racing game with a controller but I can't remember many other racing games that aren't sims that have that kind of behaviour.

I can't thank you 2 enough (plus another friend of mine who picked up this game), I'm completely smitten with the game. The understeer point is totally fine with me, it's nice to have to really think how much steering angle to dial-in even on the pad. That said I couldn't play this on X360 sticks as they have too much and inconsistent resistance on anything other than 0 or 100% lock, DS3 or 4 for me.

So far my career progress is:
Open (60s, Mini) - 1st (2/2/1)
Clubman (70s, Escort) - 2nd (2/2/2)
Professional (70s, Escort) - 1st (2/2/1)
Elite (70s, Escort) - Currently 2nd, Monte Carlo only

I know I have the ability to put down more victories, but in career I have not had a single major incident bar the odd spin and minor damage. I'm happy that I'm matching the difficulty curve mostly, the competition is getting tougher no doubt as smaller mistakes are becoming more critical.

Now if only I can find it in me to ditch the Escort, every time I try an AWD car in quick events I miss that steer from the rear feeling too much...

There's a quote that got me worried in that article:

“By having a more in-depth simulation underneath, you're not taking the possibility of doing something more Dirt 3 based away from players”, Coleman explains. “You just have to layer the stuff in on top that we always traditionally did on console to make those experiences more accessible, and actually although we're doing narrow tracks in rally, there are things we can do to the track edges – for example to soften the blow of going off the edge of the road and crashing and hitting tree your car getting written off.”

I hope that for the final release Codies keeps the hardcore simulation aspect for the PC version. I don't care if they add Gymkhana and dumb down the physics for consoles (because it would be a commercial suicide otherwise), but please don't dumb down the PC version :nervous:

Just make the damage scalable. Rally games in the past had this too, also on consoles.
You could wreck your whole car in WRC Evolved without any assists with one, simple mistake.

I have to say, I'm doing a really bad job of taking care of my car in the monthly event. Over the last two service areas my radiator has been at 0%... I had hoped when I finished the Monte Carlo bit I'd get a brand new car to carry on with, but no - it's pretty much buggered. I'm 10 minutes down on the best time, too! Last time I played I was on the second to last Wales stage, doing really well, hadn't had any collisions and I was making pretty good time, then I practically brushed against a rut which of course shot me at lightspeed to the outside of the next corner, off the track, on my roof and into a tree which also gave me a flat tyre somehow. I ragequit so hopefully when I go back I can just redo that stage!

I have to admit that I tried pressing alt-F4 after stupidly trying a career stage while being sidetracked. It reloaded back at the start of the stage when I restarted the game. Not sure if online works like that (I assume not otherwise you can easily cheat the "one shot" restriction).

Please oh please Codies can you keep the game like this for Consoles too... I'd like 60fps also, it can be done

I'm not sure going last gen would help much at this stage vs the resources it would need. There's already a huge amount of current gen consoles around. I'd be very surprised of last gen release.

And small? :) They are much bigger than PD for instance.
