DiRT Rally Thread

Wales is definitely my worst location - oddly my favorite at the same time. I love how difficult it is. Germany is the easiest in my opinion.

It's always been like that. Ever since Colin McRae Rally. The best - and most challenging - stages have always been Welsh.

I Remember Colin McRae Rally 3 on the PS2, lost a tire in wales and finished 3rd (still 1st overall) at PRO.

What a great time. Too bad they didn't put Colin's Focus livery in this game.

Regarding controller feedback (or lack thereof), I've posted a thread on the official subreddit. I know 1 or 2 people here had similar issues so feel free to chip in. Hopefully it's something that Codemasters can look into.

I think that the controller sensitivity is lessened for a reason. Track racing being for the most on a relatively smooth surface is a different beastie from gravel, dirt or compacted ice - if you were to do several stages, you'd have tingling hands from the constant vibration...also, the batteries would likely last half as long.

At least, that's the way it seems to me.

I have decided that I HATE rallycross. It's impossible to get a good start with a controller, and the slightest bit of contact will spin you around.
Also, the rallycross cars feel dull; there's none of the nuance that you get with the rally cars. They feel like they're better-suited to a demolition derby, designed to take punishment above all else. Penalties are also dodgy as hell - I was racing on the Holjes Clubman circuit and put two wheels over the ripple strip on the chicane without any penalty on one lap, but did the same thing on the next and was under investigation.

I've barely given this game five hours of my time since Tuesday, but it's all slowly coming back to me after spending weeks on Forza. The DiRT 3 approach simply won't cut it here and it's very much reminiscent of the time I first dove into the original CMR. :D

Some things that never change: I absolutely suck at the Greek stages and Sweden pushes my blood pressure into danger territory. Haven't ventured far beyond the Mini or Fulvia, but they're a blast on any location when fully upgraded. Especially around my old back garden in Powys.

If the Escort RS2000 is anything to go by, I can't see myself using the '70s or RWD Group B cars often beyond hooning about in custom rallies. I hate having to jack up the assists just to maintain even the vaguest sense of control behind the wheel of the Escort. Friggin' lethal.

I found that pausing then un-pausing the game around the two second mark during the countdown causes the AI to bog down off the line, allowing me to get a half second lead by the first turn. At least on the Höljes Clubman circuit in the 1600 class (Xbox version).

It's not really essential for me to get such an advantage since I tend to do well there without upgrades anyway. Unlike Lydden Hill short.

I am doing a Stratos run in the Clubman tourney. First event is Wales and managed a 3rd. I will take it, that thing wants to kill me.

I came second in the Open series' as well thanks to some very rough beginnings after diving straight into career. Still though, suppose thats the way the career is meant to be played given you are moving up the ranks. Getting my first overall championship win will feel amazing. :D

You do know how to sit in a Stratos, right?

First, you sit down and lean back. Next, bend your left leg so that your heel is up against your butt. Then, stick your right leg up at a 45° angle. Place your elbows against your knees and push outwards so that you can hold the steering wheel, but your knees cannot go any wider than your shoulders.

You can now drive a Stratos.

I knew I was doing something wrong. There should be a video tutorial for this.

gotta love the sound of the Stratos though. And actually I like the way it handles. I hat the Peugot kitcar. So much undesteer that I want to cry. Luckily I can now use the g25 gearstick as a handbrake.

I chose the Stratos for the Clubman Championship as well. I blazed through Wales without much issues but was getting slaughtered in Sweden by two Finnish AI drivers - was down by 25 seconds until I made a comeback in the last two races to 1st place, very much thanks to one of them badly damaging his car in the last race. Though, admittedly, I rage quit the game two times during that event. Those snowbanks are lethal.

:embarrassed:

Basically the only reason I chose it. Without any doubt one of the best sounding cars and I absolutely love pushing it sideways (although that can and will bite you in the ass).

Xbox one and the TX are mega powerful FFB, having to turn it way way down and really finding the use of handbrake very tricky when mapped to B button on wheel. FWD cars I hate, RWD I love and the modern Rally cars are just sublime, which I'd expect as if after years and years of technical advances if it was easier to drive a Group B car than a modern day Rally car it would be daft IMO..
This game is hard though. Motorbike racers and Rally drivers get the most respect out of me in the world of Motorsport..

I chose it because its a SEGA Rally classic. :D

Just wish there was a Celica to go alongside the Delta and Stratos.

This is one of the positives of Dirt for me, most other rally titles (looking at you WRC5 and SLR) have AI drivers who never ever make mistakes. In Dirt not only can they mess up, but the timing gaps between places are far more realistic.

I restarted my career the other day to use the new Alpine. I've currently finished first in the first 4 rallies so far. Either I've gotten really good or the Alpine is overpowered.

I've been using the Alpine too, and I can actually win races. But that is compared to the Mini, which was slow as crap.

There was a website with relative speed test results I saw a few days back (sorry, no clue about the URL) and indeed the Alpine was showing as a good 5s faster than the other two over a 3 minute stage.

Codemasters didn't go for balance-of-performance within each class, so you really can make life relatively easier or harder for yourself by picking the "right" car in any specific class.

I just picked it up last night and thought the same thing. I tried the settings Thrustmaster recommended and thought they were a bit strong. What settings are you using?

I can't use the B button either, I might try mapping the e-brake to my sequential shifter and just go auto. I hate to do it but I really see the need for a proper e-brake. Anybody know if Thrustmaster is going to come out with a e-brake add-on?

If you have a manual shifter, the rubber-band trick is perfect. I run three strong rubber bands on my TH8A shifter (I keep the H-pattern, don't like the sequential mode - and I use the manual sometimes) and use 4th gear as my e-brake. It works a treat.

When running a manual transmission I use a paddle for the e-brake.

I've set up a league/club at the thread below. Stick your details on the GTPLANET thread link. The second link is where the league events are run from. You can take part in as much or as little as you like.

Is it just me or does anybody miss the atmosphere of DiRT2? I mean I really like this game, and I know they've gone for a more realistic approach with this game, but just the music and feeling of DiRT2 will be missed

According to this it also works on ps4 with usb,
First up, he was talking Xbox One.
Second up, the Thrustmaster post states "sequential mode" for mapping handbrake in DR PS4, whereas the handbrake mode manual on the link I posted clearly states "not compatible with sequential plate". You have to run analog handbrake with either the H plate or no plate.

So hence my post explaining that Thrustmaster has analog handbrake capability already, but you're not going to get it on consoles right now.
