DiRT Rally Thread

Well I was doing rather well in today's stage, 15k of WRC Polo fun in Finland, until I got carried away and hit a tree with the rear. Last 2k with a flat tyre and then on the rim.

I must say I do like that the daily, weekly and monthly challenges are 'one-shot'' events, adds that 'real rally' element to them. Do you push and risk stuffing it or do you take it easier and risk a slower time and lesser reward.
I've come to the conclusion that I push and stuff it far too often. :banghead:

Key for me is not being scared to knock SAT down, really is a great setting as it basically is the main setting for how the wheel reacts to forces from the road through the steering rack, I used to drive a FWD Alfa 155 track car that wanted to torque steer everywhere and when it hit even the smallest line on the track or road tram lined like a..well, like a tram.. BUT the SAT if you set it too high (at least with TX wheel) is just too much) balance is SAT with some tyre friction and let the forces breath a bit... heaven..

For sure i'll be AMAZED that when PCars 2 comes they haven't maybe settings screens look a bit more like DiRT, and for christ sakes isn't it great being able to change settings as your driving via pause menu..

Finally got there. :P

Oh boy. I finished first in the Professional Championship with the Beemer and proceeded to Elite difficulty. I decided to go with one of my all time favorite rally car, the Focus '01. This car is absolutely neutered in its current state without any upgrades. Two stages into Finland and I'm already 42 seconds behind. I'm sooooo screwed.

Thanks to @prisonermonkeys' tip, I went full retard with my crew chief's and engineers' perks and bet all my horses on the Focus '01 and 4WD upgrades. Engine and weight reduction upgrades #1 are installed as well a 20% progress for the turbo upgrade - all this after miraculously getting 3rd place in Finland. Or not falling asleep during for that matter. It really was that boring.

Hopefully I can be slightly more competitive in the upcoming event in Greece.

does anyone else find the 1995 Subaru to be really slow? are the gear ratios set to being very long by default, just seems a hell of a lot slower than the Alpine that i had previously been using.

Screw this Daily

After landing a jump at almost the very end of the stage, a bump sent me straight into some rocks and halted the more than decent time I had going. Didn't even make the top 100 today.

Doesn't sound right, unless you just bought and started using the car, then it's unupgraded.

Me too, I had a go at the daily for the second time and hit another tree and I was caning it, I am sure for a good time (terminal damage and no front, retired on 15.00m) Out and can't try again :( 2 DNF now

I've also had it 3 days and loving it (PS4).
I have a love / hate relationship with the snow stages though (mostly hate), the roads are so narrow and brutally punishing for the slightest mistake. Lol, I got stuck on a snow bank about 200m from the finish line and I lost the lead by 2 seconds because of it, grr.
Love the gravel and tarmac stages though. Can't wait to play it again after work. It's a great feeling when you nail the correct line through a corner.

I was doing a custom championship in Monte Carlo, and drew one of the longest stages in the dark. I made it about 500 metres before I slipped up, glanced a wall, and lost the lights. I had to do ten kilometres in the dark.

I think Greece is my dud rally because I've driven off a cliff 3 times, forcing me to retire. I lost one rally as a result of this in the last sector of the last stage in my Lancia Stratos. Bumped into a rock on the ride hand side of the road, smashed into the soild rock face on the left, completely unsettling the car and turning it backwards, then I fall down the cliff. I only bumped the rock at 60 KM/H.

I've done 3 events in Sweden so far...after a bad start where I gave away a 24 second lead to L.Beattie I've managed to win the 2 following events bringing the deficit to 8 seconds. That being said, P.Olsen in third is another 30 odd seconds further behind so I'm glad I have some breathing space.

I would happily take a 2nd from Sweden if I can keep up the decent performances.

Does anybody know what "goat track" is in Greek? Because I swear, some of these roads barely look wide enough to ride a mountain goat down, much less force a Group B dragon through.

Bought the entire DiRT collection on Steam the other day for £34. Having absolutely mega fun in my career so far, but I've found that my niché is definitely rallycross as opposed to rallying.

Greece is easily the hardest of the bunch. Anyone else find the main site isn't working right now? It's going to the codemasters shop page.

Racenet is down for maintenance.

I'm quite the opposite.

Rallycross is...(for me) absolutely terrible and pointless. It's hugely wasted on me in Dirt Rally. It's fare more akin to the short silliness of previous rally games which put me off driving them. I was a bit sad to see them even put so much time/effort into the Rallycross portion of this game.

So I'd actually be fine if it featured less in the next game (and I'm sure it won't!)

At least we don't have Gymkhana!

That's Rallycross. Its actually a pretty accurate recreation of the sport itself.

I like it, I'm just not that good at it.

I was struggling with the Mini, for the first event. :indiff:. I eventually realized i should be taking off in 2nd, first 3 heats i ended up 2nd and third. Its just kind of less thrilling then being on a rally stage.

Its remarkable how engaging i'm finding the career so far, I'm sure its not for everyone but i'm really enjoying it, its a lesson for some other titles perhaps that over complicate career structures?
Its also quite refreshing to not have the usual 'jack of all trades master of none' concept which has you virtually crossing from one side of the globe to the other driving loads of different cars and driving types for very small periods of time and has you jetting off again before you have really got to grips with it all....
Its nice to know your in that car for a while and you can learn and drive around any issues it may have.

I wish they introduced longer rallies earlier in the career personally. Even at an amateur level, opening rallies shouldn't be 3-5 stages etc. I'd enjoy the ability to jump into an 18-24 stage rally right off the bat, at an early level.

Yes certainly an option to do so, having said that i'm enjoying the drip feeding of the stages to be honest, i'm aware there aren't many so almost glad they hold some back in career. I really hope they support this game with DLC.

Well the best news I've heard was with an interview with some of the designers. Essentially Dirt Rally was a very low-budget test game. The response was overwhelming so we can probably look forward to a full-budget, fully fleshed out, mind-melting sequel in the next 2-3 years I'd guess. That being said, I do hope they continue to support Dirt Rally and don't drop it for the sequel just yet.

My main disappointments remain:

-Only 12 stages per rally, most of them are reverse layouts of the first six etc. (long stages are simply combinations of short stages etc.) So the rallies are quite lacking. It's nice though to be able to mix say Wales and Finland for a larger diverse gravel rally. As a whole, rallies are way too small. I'd trade half the rallies for more stages.

-No tire management/selection. Huge oversight and continues to bug me. A large part of rally tactics/strategy is tires. Particularly with varying weather and conditions, I really...desperately hope we see tire selection/management in the second game.

-Atrocious livery/paint scheme and weak models. They're completely fine and don't matter until a replay, but it's safe to say that slightly warmed over Dirt 3 models with awful piss-poor livery builds needs work.

That being said...easily the best rally game since RBR. I don't see any competition in the near future, and if they bring it with the sequel...we'll have a phenomenal product on our hands.
