DiRT Rally Thread

Fun game, really kinda bring back the feeling of playing Colie McRae Rally 2.0 from ages ago(before I playing racing game with wheels but just with keyboard in my college dorm room). Now with wheels on PC its just a really fun experience punctuated by rage of hitting a tree with like corners to go to end a stage....lol. Its accessible like the CMR2 without being just hard like Richard Burns Rally for me. If I had to pick faults it would be there is a bug for me where in replay the car just looks blurry from any of the fixed on-car cam(like fender shot, hood view or front tire shot). Gameplay wise it never appeared to be a problem. And other thing is pace notes being really hard to get right tempo wise. I've played with timing and sometimes it still seems off between rally or stages, just not very consistent with the pacing IMO. And then some notes are pretty off in terms of speed to my mind(corners they called for 5 feels like a 3 at best), and sometimes missing details(don't cut the inside but missing the narrowing exit or a tree or something). One of my friend mentioned this is a game you kinda have to reign yourself in to not push at 95% all the time because that just means the margin is not there and you will crash a lot, very true for me...lol

I'm still not too sure if my FFB is fully dialed in but it seems to work ok with my T500RS. Just wondering something about Soft Lock, is that basically the game sets the steering lock per car and you just leave the full range from wheel setting?

I'm not sure...I have Soft Lock turned on and it works okay. I've never been good at getting FFB dialed in on pretty much any game.

I do suffer a bit with pace notes. Some are oddly timed, and even with other sounds at 60% and co-driver at 100% I struggle to hear him often (has been a gripe since the game came out). You don't get the "oh I have a headset on and I'm listening to my co-driver". It sounds more like he's shouting in a car without headset.

@dopedog I felt the same when Codemasters first dropped it on the PC via early access. It just came out of nowhere, but at the very start it had the same FFB setup as every other codemasters racing game of recent years. It was awful, no two ways about it. Not though, it is definitely one of the best feeling out there on a wheel in regards to the most recent rally game offerings. Dirt Rally just keeps going from strength to strength, and it really reminds me of the days I used to sit playing the Colin Mcrae Rally games. I still have fond memories of playing CMR2 on the PC with my old and trust Microsoft sidewinder force feedback racing wheel.

--------------------

I went a little insane last night. I decided to get the Ford Sierra and started a custom championship with it, which started at Finland; and I was doing well. I was following the pace notes, was winning the sectors pretty easily, even though the car had no career mode upgrades to it. Then I came to one of the longer variants duing the daytime, and I got within the last 2 sectors.... and disaster. My Nvidia graphics driver crashed, the game glitched out and froze, and I had to run the entire track again once I rebooted the game. The only issue was, I just could not get back into a rhythm. So I made a cup of tea, and took a break for 20 minutes. When I returned to my PC, I thought 'Screw it!'. I went into the options menu, turned off the co-driver volume and opened up windows media player, put on my headphones and stuck on some AC/DC as loud as I stand.

Sufficed to say I got through the stage rather well, and I finished the other stages without the co-driver audio calls. Then I ended up on one of the longer stages at night, and this is the result.

p.s currently rendering out an in car gameplay video of the same lap, just need to figure out where to upload it; because music.

Just started a few days ago and am having loads of fun. Some cars are very hard to get used to but all in all I think it just takes time to get accustomed to the 'feel' of the physics.

Hopefully the video below can convey a truer sense of the game play. The Lancia is a handful so, all things considered, I quite like this lap (warts and all):)

Edited and removed the vid, havent been on the site for a while, did not see a thread dedicated to vids.

@RacingManiac I am assuming you are on the PC version, if so, then you just need to set the 'Shader' to 'Low'. This will keep the shader turned on, but will get rid of that annoying blurring during replays with the on car camera's.

Floaty like last gen Dirt and Grid floaty? For me since Codies moved to the Ego engine thats when this Floaty feeling was introduced and i hated it.
Yeah, that's how I'd describe it. I only played GRID: Autosport for a few weeks but it had a similar lack of feedback. I've everything at 150% and it still feels like I'm getting vibration too late.

The last Codemasters game that I played that had solid controller feedback was F1 2011. I guess I've just been spoiled with Forza Motorsport 6 as that title has the best controller feedback I've ever experienced.

Yeah ive read the reviews it all sounds great but even last gen codies games got very good reviews and most people on here loved autosport but i just hated the floaty feeling. Would hate to buy this and it still suffers from that ego floatyness like the poster suggested.

Its about as floaty as driving say the GT4 BMW M3 on PCars is, or any of the Renault road cars on PCars. For me cars do tend to float a bit in real life, never was sure what people were trying say by floaty, any of the floaty feeling is only present on the tarmac stages but even then now i'd say with firmer settings i'm getting a more stable feel.
But yeah as someone who once owned a big old American motor....cars really can feel floaty.. its called soft suspension.

Can you not just try before you buy? You got any local indie games shops near you, my local indie lets me try stuff out on his system set up in his shop.

Ive been running time trials on the Pant Mawr sprint stage in Wales, testing out pretty much every car. The Quattro has one of the best engine sounds, great pops aswell! I found the Delta to be the grippiest and most playable to drive - the vid below is probably my cleanest run at 3:19. But i did go quicker with '01 Focus at 3:17 and then the Polo at 3:13.....the Polo will probably the car i use when i get to the higher levels, feels really quick, and probably the best all-round.

Other standouts were the Renualt 5 Turbo,Peugeot 205 and the 306 Maxi. Yeah i prefer the hatchbacks heh!

I think DiRT Rally is the best game I've ever played. Never has anything been so intense, so strategic, so thrilling. The purity of this game is insane, you have to play a mental and physical game, just like the real thing. My head was hurting last night because I was concentrating so hard trying to keep my Lancia Stratos in check. I have never felt this way whilst playing a video game and I love it.
Sounds like Dark Souls lol

I want Martini focus 01 livery so bad. Back to Colin 2.0 Nostalgia kicks in.

Been hammering this since release. Best rally sim in years. Love the physics, dust and sound, especially gravel hammering the undercarriage and brake squeal. Not a fan of the tire squeal at Monaco though. Needs to be toned down a bit. I'd also like to see the arcade-like fade to gray affect removed that appears when you collide with and object. The game could do with a few more locations and cars too, as well as the ability to select tires. Other than that, very happy.

They managed to get some of Colin's liveries added late during Early Access.... Maybe a livery pack DLC could be on the cards if they feel it worth the licensing cost?

The easiest way to sum this up...

If you're a rally fan, buy the game. Comments/reviews etc....ignore them. If you like rally, you'll enjoy this title (probably quite a bit).

If you're bored and looking for a race game for a quick fix...debatable.

Well what can I say about this game, for years I have been wishing for a return to the glory days of rally sims/games . Colin McRae rally (up to 2005), wrc series and vrally 3 all hold a special place in my childhood, even the dirt series on PS3 I really enjoyed the rally stages and knew there was something decent there buried under all the X games stuff.

Physics are amazing on a controller for a sim, something I feel pcars is lacking on console.
Graphics are silky smooth.
Sound is amazing , only game on par with pcars in my opinion.

And then there the fun/challenging aspect of it, this has been the only game since gt that I feel like spending hours learning and mastering a specific cars handling is worth it and rewarding.
I don't just wana fly through every round to see what's next I can use the same car on the same stage for 30 minutes to and not get bored.

Only slight cons are the pacenotes notes can be a bit optimistic (when a 5/6 feels like a 3/4) and a couple more rally locations wouldn't hurt.

But apart from that it's everything I've been waiting for since the ps2 days , worth the wait! amazing game :)

I am a fan of the series as I have played all the previous games, I wasn't able to buy it when it came out last week because of work but now I have the day of tomorrow and I will be downloading it to my Xbone!

May I ask why? Surely if you are on snow, then the snow tyres you are given are the best choice and no one is going to want road or gravel tyres instead...
Mostly to choose between spiked ice tires or more normalish road tires depending on if you're going uphill or downhill at Monaco.

For all its unforgiving realism, a few video game moments still creep in. I was running today's daily stage in Finland and knocked the rear spoiler off the Sport Quattro. Instead of the engine quickly seizing, I was able to continue on my merry way.

Is there any way to chose different co-driver calls in PS4?
So instead of calling "Right-six into Left-four" the calls could be "Six-right into four-left"

I know, I crashed into a tree and I didn't so much s have a broken bone let alone be dead...

I'm probably not getting this anytime soon, so I installed Dirt 3 on my XBO. I just hope my cloud save has synched this time.

So are the stages modeled on real ones for this game?

Slightly annoyed that i can't do a custom rally championship but using only the countries i want, i.e. skipping Monte Carlo and Germany.
