DiRT Rally Thread

@mr_VOLCANO I did see you ran an impressive 8.28 on pikes peak gravel version. Can you tell if that is done with the stock car or the car with the 5 improvements installed? Did you make changes to the setup as well?

Thank you :)đź‘Ť Event today? It was not possible to tune the car, I am not sure about the upgrades, but you could chose from all 3 cars, so I think you drive with the upgrades you have installed. And it was tarmac BTW.

Edit : Or do you think about normal leaderboard? The car was upgraded there, don't think I changed anything, if it was, then only a few clicks longer gears

How come that Pikes Peak on gravel is extremely off time wise? Vatanen 's record with the 405 T16 was 10:47:220 and I run 90 seconds faster than him. The car performance according to game and rl seem similar. Is the car faster than it should or is the layout with its distance not correct ingame?

I think its normal to go faster in game then real life, even in the most realistic ones, but yes, this seems far off, many times when I get a good corner, I say to myself this is far from possible IRL, maybe too much grip or something, I dont know, but atleast its fun and the pysics feels good.

I checked now, and I am around 40sec faster then Loeb in the modern car, that is just too many seconds to blame it on lack of fear, g-forces etc.

Just take the first 12 sec on this lap, full throttle in the first turns, I cant really see how that is possible on the real track.

I chose single player, personal, hillclimb, Pikes Peak gravel, Peugeot 405. I see in my screen 0/5 upgrades applied. I manage to run 8:50 without touching setup. Run in the limiter on the straights. Even my first try I ran Ă  10:14 which is already much faster than Vatanen's records and I was very carefull. As you say the driving is excellent but I am disappointed with this big difference in time :indiff:

Then I think we will be close when you upgrade the car ;)

I don't claim to be very good at this game, in fact I am terrible, but I think I have a grip on most of the cars in the game. Except the Lancia 037. That thing feels like it's constantly on ice, I can't control it, to the point where it's frustrating to drive. It's a shame, it's one of my favorite rally cars of all time.

I wonder if it's easier to drive with a proper racing wheel? (I use a controller, because I'm too poor to afford a wheel, though I am thinking of getting one)

You're not alone. I cannot for my life control the 037. I have yet to finish an event or a stage with it without crashing. I've actually given up on it because as you mentioned, it isn't fun to drive and just straight up frustrating.

I've got over 5200 kilometres on the clock (with the DS4) as well having driven all cars and managing to do so without any trouble - with the exception of the Lancia 037.

On the T150 it's just as bad in my opinion. Like an engine powered row-boat.

I tried driving it on my DiRT Rally World Tour article series here and it was easily my mistake-prone run:

Argh, I've got a 1.307 second lead in Greece going into the final stage, and no matter what I do, I just can't get it right. I'm losing a massive amount of time in the third sector, and I absolutely need this win to keep my championship bid alive - I took second in Sweden and Monte Carlo, and won in Germany while my title rival, Gauthier, finished tenth. So I have a nine-point lead with two of my weakest events, Wales and Finland, to go.

Yes, I did it!

I managed to snatch victory in Greece by just two tenths of a second, which felt like an enormous achievement; there's an uphill two left through a junction late in the stage with ruts on the apex, soft soil on the outside, and berm-like embankments that made the turn-in blind and threaten to beach you if you carry too much speed through it. It doesn't matter how many times I try it, I just can't get it right (at least, not consistently right).

The next round was Finland, which has always been a weak rally for me because I only do it occasionally and I'm usually a good 40km/h slower than I need to be. After a lot of experimentation, I managed to get into a terrifying rhythm and started trading blows with my title rival. I wound up two point eight seconds behind him going into the final stage, Paskuri, and quickly found that I could take the first sector flat to the point where I was ten seconds faster than anyone else through the first sector. That was enough to get me to the end, so I took three rally wins in a row.

The final rally was Wales, and I decided early on to play it safe, since most of the stages were based around Pant Mawr, which is easily my weakest stage in the game. I would have liked to have pushed for the outright win, but with a twenty-three point lead, it wasn't worth it.

Finally getting used to the handling of hillclimb cars. It helps that my Peugeot 405 is now fully developed. I managed to improve my time over the full layout by over twenty seconds between two runs, but I haven't been able to learn the full course just yet (though I do know most of the final sector). I'm losing most of my time in the first half as I am often braking for corners that don't need it. I really don't like the sunset runs, though - there are times near the summit where you're on the eastern face of the mountain, and I struggle to see the road because it's in shadow.

I now have at least one full-upgraded car in each class, except for Modern Hillclimb. That's next on my shopping list, next to the 2001 Subaru Impreza and the Group B Audi Quattro.

actually, it's sunrise ... and you are on the southwest side of the mountain, in those shadows ;)

I take back everything I said about hillclimb cars now that I'm on tarmac. I have constant understeer, and no idea how to correct it whilst keeping the rest of the car's handling the same.

I despise the classic hillcimb cars on the tarmac version of Pikes Peak. On gravel, they're absolutely wonderful though and for me, easily the favourite thing to do in the game. However, the 208 is a perfect match for it - after the latest patch anyway.

Well, I managed to win both passes over all three stages of the Open-class championship despite the wonky handling, but weirdly, I didn't get the "Propane & Propane Accessories" achievement.

How is this game with a controller on the PC?

I sold my T300 last year because I played Pcars so little at the time, and I got a great price for it.
Holidays are coming up, and this game looks really interesting being someone who put in countless hours into WRC3 on the PS2...

Was thinking of getting a Logitech controller for the PC to play this and Pcars, they're only $20 after all.

On the consoles, the controllers are really well implanted, so normally that should be the same on the PC version.
But i recomend a Xbox One or Xbox 360 controller for PC..they are really good!

I just blew 500,000 credits on the 2001 Subaru Impreza, and I have to say I'm really disappointed with it. I haven't quite upgraded it just yet, but where I usually thrash the AI in Germany, the Impreza was struggling to keep up.

It's fun with a controller but it's difficult. You won't be able to set the same stage times as a wheel. But it's very rewarding when you pull off a sick move with a controller.

I have found that when you check out the website, you can filter stage times for online events based on the use of a controller or a steering wheel. I use a controller, so I'm nowhere near the best times, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I'm actually pretty quick among the controller users.

Just going to leave this here in case one of you guys have a solution faster than Steam.

IDK why it just quit working after one stage...

I'd be interested maybe as long as they we didn't ever do Finland! :P

IIRC Vatanen's record is set on the all gravel version of the track. The gravel version in the game is mixed with some asphalt sections so it's gonna be faster. Doesn't explain why you're also faster against Loeb on the all tarmac version though. A bit disappointing on the accuracy side if that's the case.

You can find a video of the full Loeb run on youtube. Maybe do a side by side comparison to see where you are gaining time? My bet is they don't model the power and downforce loss with altitude in the game. So early on you will be on par, but as you go higher you will be much faster than Seb.
