DiRT Rally Thread

IIRC Vatanen's record is set on the all gravel version of the track. The gravel version in the game is mixed with some asphalt sections so it's gonna be faster. Doesn't explain why you're also faster against Loeb on the all tarmac version though. A bit disappointing on the accuracy side if that's the case.

You can find a video of the full Loeb run on youtube. Maybe do a side by side comparison to see where you are gaining time? My bet is they don't model the power and downforce loss with altitude in the game. So early on you will be on par, but as you go higher you will be much faster than Seb.

The full gravel version is in there as well.

My time on the full gravel version is around 8:40:xx that's more than 2 minutes faster than Vatanen. So somewhere the game has serious accuracy problems.

I saw that, and my heart skipped a beat. New tracks, cars? And then I saw the patch notes... 10GB update for something I won't be using, at least anytime soon. Grr.

At least it seems to be optional. I noticed that I didn't get the last update because I don't use a wheel. That said, I haven't played the game today, so I'm really hoping that it's optional. If it isn't, online is pretty much out of the question for me.

Do you guys have data caps?

Finally made it to platinum trophy. "Spirit of the rally" trophy was definitely one of my most hated trophies in a long time :irked:

Hey Dirt Rally peoples! Noob here, thought I'd say hello.

I've played this properly for the first time today (PS4) - completed 2 events in the Open Championship (I'm somehow 1st haha) using the 60's Lancia.

Wow, this game is super hard, and super awesome. Loving the grip/surface change in the monte carlo stages with big altitude shifts.

The messy sound design is nice too, gravel flying everywhere, nice varied impact sounds (been impacting a lot).

Just a really nice feel to it.

I'm on a pre-paid mobile broadband device until such time as I can get a permanent connection; for that to happen, a port needs to become available. I've been waiting for quite a while, and I expect that I will be waiting quite some time.

Finally bought this game, and I'm enjoying it a lot, but I'm not sure who or why proclaimed it's a sim when it's so clearly not, the cars feel very weightless and floaty and I don't get a good sense of balancing the car while driving, it's good simcade fun, but so far removed from being a proper sim. Otherwise it's all good, nice visuals and performance, good polish and overall good fun after a couple beers.

Wut?

Notice he didn't mention his control method or any further detail....

But in general, yes it's certainly true that DiRT Rally cars jump a little too easily, and that the physics for cars while off the ground is not that great. It was discussed a lot during early access (originally cars had more downforce, this was reduced to current levels).

And let's assume someone is of the "harder is more realistic" camp, then obviously the amount of grip in DR would appear to be unrealistic to such a person. Especially guys with many years of playing RBR tend to think that it must be closest to reality so other rally sims which feel different cannot be right, even though RBR was obviously a compromise at the time of creation.

As always, no sim is perfect. DR does a lot of things right, but not everything.

But if there was a perfect sim, the people calling for a perfect sim would be the first to complain that it was too difficult.

So true, its hard enough to drive a car on the limit IRL, take away the feel from g-forces and it would be much harder. For me, Dirt has a good balance in realism, and captures the feel very good.

I don't really know on the dirt side. But you'd be surprised to hear that it's actually easier to drive a race car in real life than on most sims.

Anyone playing on PC... Is there a GTPlanet League? If so is there regularly rallies setup? If not, would anyone be interested in a GTPlanet League where there are new Rallies every day?

To add to this post. I will create a league tonight. Could everyone
I'm about to try and switch to a controller. I've now broken to FFB motors in 2 weeks with this game...

To follow up to this post.

I've just created the League. Will start Rallies over the weekend. Probably will be one every 3 days or so while I'm on vacation in Europe. When I return in August to the US. Daily rallies!

So I've been driving with the 60's Lancia so far, and recently switched to the Escort MkII (my first real-world car!).

I don't want to be stating the obvious here, but bloody hell, the difference. Could barely keep the damn thing on the road... Despite the obvious differences, the Escort felt very floaty and disconnected. There was a certain physical solidity to the Lancia that was quite convincing, but this? Not so much...

Is that just me?

@Kamuifanboy I think I find sims harder to drive (not that I've driven a race car, driven a GT86 rally car) because No matter how good the FFb etc. there's nothing to replace the feeling of when you know tyres are at the limits of grip, or when you can feel the pendulum effect start when the back starts to break (or is about to).

All you have on a sim is your hands on the wheel and your eyes. You can't feel the whole cars movement with your body.

Open up the rear diff, and use the semi-automatic gearbox. Get yourself up into third as quickly as possible, and the car will feel more planted.

Thanks, but without wishing to sound completely dumb, what does 'open up the rear diff' mean...? :)

Lower the differential settings in tuning - which will reduces the urgency of it to lock under acceleration/deceleration.

Aside from that, eh, it's just the Escort. It can only slide and you gotta learn to use that, but once you 'get' it it's entirely natural.

Loosen the rear differential. It will limit the wheelspin, especially in low-grip conditions (which is pretty much everywhere; this is rallying, after all). You'll need to feather the throttle and short-shift with the semi-automatic gears to get to third as it's still squirrelly in first and second, but once you know how to tame it, it's brilliant.

So, apart from this diff thing, it's a case of #dealwithit
Not really. Once you loosen the differential, the car becomes so much more drivable. It applies to pretty much every rear wheel drive car. Once you unlock the advanced setup, you'll have even more control over the settings.

The differential works to control torque across an axle. It allows each wheel to rotate at a different speed, which is particularly useful in cornering. When the differential is tightened, it allows more torque to go to the wheels, but because this is a rear wheel drive car, you're putting all the power down at once. It's great for getting traction, but it's difficult to manage through changes in direction. That's why the car feels like it's floating - the wheels are spinning so quickly that they can't bite into the surface. When you loosen up the differential, the wheels get more leeway to rotate on their own; you lose traction, but the car becomes so much more stable when you change direction - and that's important in rallying because so much of your overall speed comes from keeping up your momentum.

Awesome, great advice man, much appreciated - this kind of advice in-game would be handy eh.

Also, I can't help thinking that my feeling of floatiness is affected by the audio too. I mean, if the back wheels are just thrashing through the gravel and churning it up, I would have expected most of the sound to be the gravel smashing against the chassis. I didn't get that sound feedback, so the feeling of disconnection was greater...

But anyway, I'll change the diff settings and try again tonight.

(loving the game btw - the snowed-in swedish stages, and the rallycross are so much fun)

It gives you a brief summary of what changes to each component will do on the setup screen. It's not a comprehensive discussion by any means, but it's enough to give you a general sense of what effect changes will have. Just look in the column on the left.

G'day brought a g29 with h pattern shifter and cannot get it to work on the ps4. If I select auto or sequential with the flippers behind the wheel it works fine but as soon as I select the h pattern with clutch, car just revs in neutral and doesn't move with depression of clutch and gear shift. Wheel and pedals calibrated but soon as it loads a stage it won't work. Anyone had this issue or know why Iam can't get the clutch and shifter to work, works of pcars no worries just seems to be dirt.

Just a random observation: I've always considered Driveclub to have the best visuals on console racers, but playing it before Dirt Rally last night, really emphasised how beautiful the latter is...
