DiRT Rally Thread

So, I figured out why the achievements weren't unlocking - I wasn't connected to the internet. The first time I did the 2000s championship, I was only connected for the final rally.

Not looking forward to doing the hillclimb championship again ...

I just picked up this game over the weekend, it was on sale for $24. It's pretty fun, but I'm pretty terrible at it. I've only won one stage so far, I've had a lot of seconds, but that dude from Norway always wins.

Is there a easy way to bring up recover vehicle? One of my few complaints is, it sometimes takes forever for that option to pop up. I don't mind the 13 second penalty, but it sucks when that option doesn't pop up for 10+ seconds. I've been high centered on snowbanks a couple times now, and this last time it seriously took 20 seconds until it popped up.

One of the options on the pause menu is recover vehicle.

I'm learning the game myself. You have to appreciate the gradual learning curve. The default setups aren't that great off the bat. You'll have to experiment with a generous amount of tuning before you can get the car to handle just as you want on any given stage.

With the game on sale on both PSN and the Microsoft Store, it's a sure thing that I'm picking it up within the next 24 hours. I need me some rallying action.

The harder question is which system? Strictly speaking, I have more room on my PS4 (though probably not for long, since it's used for multiple genres, instead of just racing like the XB1). I also still haven't bit the bullet on which system to buy a wheel for this generation, so that isn't a factor either.

How's the online? Substantial? That just may clinch it, though even that has its pros and cons: I've got more people on my friends list on the PS4 that I believe would play it, but it's more likely I'll let my PS+ lapse than my XBL.

Cheers @sems4arsenal and @prisonermonkeys - I didn't think I'd be doing much online, but that's good to know.

I'll have to make the decision tonight. I knew I should've spent the extra for the 1TB versions of both systems. :-/

Honestly, I don't do much online except the monthlies.

Just a warning, though: the rallycross and hillclimb modes are really underdeveloped. There are six rallies, with twelve stages each (although Codemasters have continued the trend of re-using roads, but it's not as bad as in Dirt 3), but only three rallycross venues (albeit with a few variations) and one hillclimb stage (with different surfaces). The selection of cars for rallycross and hillclimb is also really limited, particularly in comparison to rally.

Bottom line is that it is a small game that has been made very well. Its replay value has far outlasted the likes of F1 2016, which I have already traded in while I still don't have all of the cars in Dirt Rally (I still have about half a dozen left to buy).

I own DR on both the XBOX One and PS4. They're identically in every aspect besides performance wise - when the game occasionally drops framerate like mad at certain sections in Monte Carlo.

With that said, I still prefer the XB1 version over the PS4, much thanks to the (in my opinion) superior controller.

Frame drops only on X1 version? I sometimes see the screen stuttering on certain stages. Annoying!

The PS4 suffers from screen-tearing and slight drop in framerate in the very same sections but it's nowhere near as bad as the microfreezes (occurs only in hairpins as far as I could tell) and very noticeable framerate drops on the XBO.

I'm on the XONE and I haven't noticed anything like that except on one stage in Monte Carlo, and then only when it's night and there is adverse weather.

If I recall correctly, I was driving in foggy condition but during the day.

Well, I have only seen it on the one stage under those conditions. I've done long stages - like Bronfelen and Pitkajarvi - at night and in the rain without issue.

Only Monte seems to be affected by these perfromance issues. The game runs perfectly fine otherwise.

STOP THE PRESS!

DiRT Rally is only £15.99 in the UK PS Store with the Black Friday 70% off deal! I bought it yesterday, & it is available until Saturday.

:D

that dude from Norway always wins.
There is usually one or two drivers who are the best performers in each championship. It appears to be completely random as to who will be competitive from championship to championship. You only need to finish in the top three at the end of the season to advance to the next tier (and will be relegated if you finish in the bottom three), but if you want to win outright, you will need at least three wins. Four is better, but the AI drivers are vulnerable to damage and mechanical failures, so it's not uncommon to see a championship competitor have a poor result.

The stages are completely randomised for each rally, but there are a few where the AI are noticeably weak. In Greece, they're slow on Pedines Epidaxi and Tsiristra Thea (but not the reverse), particularly through the first sectors; in Germany, it's Flugzeugring and Ruschberg (and the reverse); in Sweden, it's Algsjön Sprint and Skogsrallyt (but not the long stages) and in Finland, it's Paskuri and Järvenkylä (and the reverse), especially on the approach to the yellow house jump. They're the rallies you should target if you want to win, assuming that you get the right stages.

Just picked this game up, love it!
you better stay focused cause every bump can throw you off track. Don't cut hehe
I'm still having a bit trouble on the gravel stages. Pace was fast on wales. The tarmac races are fun though :)
I love how you can really tell the diffrence on snow stages if there is ice or not. Slippery!

Can't wait to try some other cars. Loving the Alpine so far.

Got this today on PS4 and it looks way better than I thought it would be, but it'll probably take me a while to get used to the handling.

When I got the choice between a Mini and Escort for my first Preview event I went for the Escort which I quickly found out was a mistake

I got it in the black Friday sale on PS4 too, and I chose the Mini first in the preview. I found the Mini frustratingly unwilling to rotate off throttle. Even an extreme oversteer setup wouldn't get me a decent amount of lift off oversteer, which was disappointing. With that said, the power on FWD physics feel really good, and I was able to easily throw it around, though the last stage required a lot of restarts, as one AI driver was a lot faster than the others, and beating him meant really pushing the car hard on the twisty gravel stage, and hitting the smallest bumps on the sides of the road at those speeds would launch the little mini in the air lol.

I then had a go with the Escort, and thought it was beautiful to drive. Being able to control the back end with the throttle was glorious after suffering the understeer-fest that is the Mini. I found myself easily demolishing the AI in the Escort without changing the setup of the car, or even doing a shakedown.

The Alpine A110 is the best car in the class. It's massively over-powered, but necessary, because the Mini and the Fulvia can't keep up with it on higher difficulty settings.

It's an absolute beast. The default setups aren't great, but loosen the differential and soften the suspension and watch it fly.

That sounds like one of the stages in Greece, Abies Koiláda, which is probably the most frustrating stage in the game.

A long long time ago I played/raced many hours as Colin McRae (besides the skills, car and many more I thought I was Colin...). Last year I tried WRC5 but after a couple of weeks lost attention. Now I also bought Dirt Rally in the sale. I'll give this one a try. First impression is a steep learning curve but this one looks and drives amazing.

Also hoping for a PSVR add-on/patch for DIRT rally. You never know.

@JASON_ROCKS1998 : I had the same experience...but I blame it to my T300 setup in DIRT. The driver never makes mistakes ;)

Liberal use of the handbrake is very helpful for rotating FWD (and AWD) cars. it's pretty much an essential skill to learn.
