I know I've been inclined to get on the old soapbox on this one - so I'll do you a deal.

You spare me your 'distant relative/friend thrown clear from car in accident, would have been killed if wearing seatbelt' story, and I'll spare you my horrifying statistics of how people who don't wear seatbelts are grossly overrepresented in road death statistics.

So - a nice anonymous poll. Given the heavy US bias of the community, I'd be VERY interested to see the results.

I do always. Its gotten to the point that if I don't have it on, I feel naked, or missing something. Like something isn't right. I can ride in the back od someones car without one though. Its only while in the fronts seat I feel this way. Back seats I never have a seat belt on.

I'm exactly the same way.

It is just a habit for me now. I remember driving to a friends house in the same neighborhood a few blocks away and putting it on. :) Now I just need to get into the habit of making all my passengers where it when they ride with me.

I always wear seatbelts, front seat or back seat. The only time I don't wear a seat belt is on the school bus. They have these "kid chopper kind, that in a bad wreck, you get cut in half because it's only a lap belt. And a bus will go through whatever it hits so I feel safe without one on the bus.

I have developed a similar feel. I prefer to wear a seatbelt in the backseat too though.

What's really weird - I feel very uncomfortable when I'm sitting without something directly in front of me, like a table or ottamin. I usually end up sitting on the floor when my friends and I watch movies at someone's house.

Just strap a GT Force wheel to your gut, that'll help. :D

Yep, I always buckle my seat belt, it's just a habit that my Mom got me started doing a long time ago. :)

I am really bad at this.... When I'm alone, I seldom wear a seat belt because no one is in the car with me to remind me...

I son is really good at it, and he reminds me often! Gotta love kids... ;)

I have worn mine since before it became law in most of the US. I have been involved in a few accidents and can't say that they have saved my life, but they did keep me from injuries that I could have sustained.

We have all heard the arguments against seat belts. What happens if you crash into the river? What happens if your car catches fire?

If you have crashed into a large body of water more than once in your lifetime you need to stop using automobiles. If you have owned a vehicle that caught fire and burned more than once you need to give it up. You are a danger to society. ;)

I have the same thing or feeling LoudMusic has (maybe we should start a self-help group:D )

I always wear mine, and anyone with me wears theirs. I even make my Grandma put hers on. She gives me what for, but I still make her wear it (beside, it's my grandma):smirk:

wearing a seatbelt is a given .....it's common sense and i don't feel secure without it .......even at 30 km/h you don't stand much of a chance against the laws of physics .....don't take chances with your life unless you plan to end up like this :skull:

Now now - there are certain 'perceptions' of American males....

Is it a generation thing? Would you find, say, more people of around 50-60 not wearing them?

My parents, when we were first out of child seats, would not start the car's engine until we (my sister and I) had put on our seat belts, so it was drummed into me. I remember my driving instructor saying, when he was teaching me reversing, that I could take the belt off, and I was like "Why?"

Then I was a taxi driver, and the police told me not to wear my seatbelt, because it could be used to restrain me in the car by a malicious passenger. It felt really weird at first, but I got used to it. Strangely, my brain always knew when I was taxiing and when I was private-driving, and I would automatically put on the seat belt when I was private-driving. Even when a taxi had been left at my door and I was using it to get to the office!

I only wear the seat belt in the back if I'm with my parents, or on a long journey, or if I don't feel that the driver of the car is any good!

It's a law now that the driver and frontseat passenger must wear belts. 15 years ago that wasn't true. And 15 years before that, cars didn't even have belts. This is just the natural progression. It's really a shame that we have to make laws to protect ourselves ... no wait, all laws are to protect ourselves.

i think it's amazing how safe cars are becoming .......manufacturers like Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, and Audi spend ridiculous amounts of money on reseach in the safety department and i think it's a really good thing .... not to mention F1 cars

Well, seatbelts became mandatory equipment on new cars in 1967 - not 1972. By then GM was experimenting with Air Bags (but didn't make them standard due to cost and the likelihood that small persons and children could be seriously injured by them).

There were some interesting variations on the standard seatbelt in the beginning - including a rather odd setup I used in a Simca once where the belts had this bizarre hooking mechanism instead of a conventional latch.

As to whether they're worth it - anybody who doesn't wear their seatbelt is a fool, pure and simple. A racing harness would be better but it's a pain when you're just driving to work and back...

I feel that way too...I thought I was strange...now Im glad to know Im just normal...lol

Want a good way to start the habit...F

First --move to a state where they can pull you over for not wearing one

Second --lose youre ass in a divorce so you only have enough money for a car

Third--get a job where no one can drive you and you have to drive youreself in a uninsured motor vehicle

You not only buckle up every time but you will start to drive slower too.

Sounds funny but it all hapened to me...now i have ins and i drive slower and wear my bealt....now when im on the country straight roads that slow driving crap goes out the window
lol

i wear it. the first thing i do when i get in a car is put it on. sometimes i get into my car to grab a cd or something and i notice that i have put it on when i go to get out. i take pride in wearing it.
