Dragon's Tuning Thread - Spec II is Coming!

Dragonthing’s Fiat 500RS - A Review By VTiRoj

As usual, a little background on the car before we begin. I have a Fiat 500 in my garage from a seasonal event many moons ago. What I liked about the 500 was that it was very nippy. Much like a city car should be actually. No understeer, no wheelspin, just point and go. So of course when Dragonthing asked me to test hers, I was very happy to.

I built the car to Dragonthing’s specs and painted it Nissan Kiwi. This 500RS is a fully tuned Fiat 500 with a mid RPM turbo, so the power and torque peaks at the same RPM, not exactly ideal unless this car had a CVT gearbox, which it doesn’t. This tune also has racing tyres, which on a car of this size and power, is beyond overkill.

Fiat500-001.jpg

I took the 500RS to Eiger. This is supposed to be a car that can tackle corners like a go-kart, so there’s no better place than Eiger to test it. Around the hairpin going towards the start line, I notice one thing. This car is feels quite numb. It handles very well and there’s no tyre squeal, but that’s the problem. It feels like the car can’t surpass the limits of its tyres and with so little power, it just feels numb. The acceleration feels okay for a car with 260bhp, although it’s hard to use all of that power. The brakes are great and stop the car on a penny. Around the tight Eiger hairpins, I could keep my foot flat to the floor without worrying about crashing into the wall. There’s no doubt this 500RS could beat super cars around here. There are no surprises for the rest of the lap to really talk about. Just neat handling, okay acceleration and a nice constant pace around the whole track. As a race car then, this is fantastic. As a driver’s car, it’s not so fantastic. It’s just too numb because of the tyres.

After a few more laps to get to know the car’s limit, I’m still not able to shake his numb feeling. It simply has far too much grip, regardless how much Ken Block I apply.

Fiat500-002.jpg

Overall, I’d give this 500RS a 7.5/10, mainly because of the few problems it has. The powerband is non-existent, you either have power or you don’t. The gearbox isn’t geared to deal with 260bhp and the tyres make the car far too numb to really enjoy as a driver’s car. I’d say a high RPM turbo, a fully customisable gearbox and if you want, some sports tyres, would definitely transform this 500 into something truly enjoyable. Apart from that, there’s a lot to like about this car and the settings are very well done.

I think you've highlighted the biggest problem with this car. I have used it so much on different tyres, and swapped between Mid and High RPM Turbos that my tune here is a bit too dull, as you said. And as for that gearbox, I spend too much time with that High RPM Turbo at the redline at 150mph...I think I'll change it to SS tyres and see what that does for my tune...

I don't think you'll lose any of the handling ability by downgrading the tyres anyway. It'll be a couple of seconds slower but it's worth it. :D

Like I said, I run it on all kinds of tyres and I honestly don't notice a real difference...I'll see about a shorter gearbox for Eiger and stuff too :D

Dragonthing’s Suzuki SX4 WRC - A Review By VTiRoj

This car has an interesting background for me. After tuning a Celica GT-Four WRC on sports medium tyres for tarmac duty, I got a few suggestions to do a similar tuning to the other WRC cars. My next project was going to be the SX4, but it never quite happened as other projects got in the way. Then Dragonthing goes and does her own take on the tarmac-tuned rally car, with her 460bhp SX4 on racing softs. Here’s the best thing though, she used my Celica GT-Four’s setup as a base! She even credited RKM too, which I wish more people would do.

Anyway, I built the SX4 to Dragonthing’s specs and this time I can’t complain about the usage of racing tyres, because this is a racing car! Also I’m not going to take pictures this review because all the SX4’s look the same anyway.

I took the SX4 to Grand Valley East. I’m not that good at the full circuit so I don’t think it’s fair that I review the car there. I’m fine with the East course though. Anyway, up the first straight this SX4 is a pocket rocket. Instant power, smooth delivery and nicely spaced gears to make the most out of the 5-speed. Round the first hairpin, there are bundles of grip and the handling is superb. Through the twisties the SX4 maintains its hold of the road and doesn’t threaten to shake you off. The two sharp rights come up and the SX4 deals with them in true WRC style. Under braking the nose of the car can dive right in, letting you slide a bit before the grip comes back and shoots you towards the exit. The LSD setup in this SX4 is very good. If you ever feel understeer, which believe me isn’t often, you can just back off the throttle and the nose will come back in. Kind of like Dragonthing’s Isuzu but more natural feeling.

Every lap I do with this car just gets faster and more fun. On those rare occasions where I thought I’d lost it, the car helped me out with its superb grip and handling. It’s a playful little Suzuki and I love it to bits because of it.

Overall this is a 10/10 tune. It’s just far too fun to give it anything less. The gearbox is nicely spaced, the suspension works, the LSD works and to top it all off, it’s very easy to drive. The only thing that would improve this car further would be a sixth gear, but that’s something PD has to let us do first. This is the second car I’ve driven using RKM/Dragonthing hybrid settings and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the best combination ever!

Glad to hear you approve of using rally cars as tarmac racers! :D I was actually reluctant to credit RKM all those months back simply because the car was a bit...odd and unlikely to gain recognition but I'm glad you like it so much :embarrassed: and the best thing? I got the original car free in a 1000 ticket

Some people have all the luck with tickets. :grumpy::lol:

Luck? Best ticket I ever got :P usually I just get a poopy duplicate version of a good standard I already have...

Sorry, I'm just still mad at how I got an Alpine A110 out of a rally ticket and not an Evo or WRX. :grumpy::lol:

Dragonthing’s Suzuki Cervo Works RS - A Review By VTiRoj

This is Dragonthing’s Cervo tune, one of the first tunes she posted on GTP if I remember right. It’s good to test a tuner’s first tune because you get a feel of how much they’ve improved over time. My only past experience with the Cervo was in the Budget Car Challenge, where I built a Cervo on a cheap and came pretty much last with it. Seems the Cervo isn’t really an ideal choice against the Cappuccino and Beat.

So after building the Cervo to Dragonthing’s specs, I painted it in Sportsman Red, slapped on a carbon aero kit and shoved some black Enkei wheels inside the arches. With a 7-speed gearbox and a healthy-looking powerband, this should be a fun ride. Also this is running racing softs, although being a seasonal tune, I can forgive it. One thing to note is that there was no downforce setting provided, so after asking Dragonthing, she said use 0/16 downforce.

9AzGv.jpg

So I decided to take it to the seasonal race that Dragonthing has a lap time posted for. The Eifel circuit with a time of 55.300. The first thing I notice is that this car accelerates very well. The gearbox keeps it right up in the powerband and with such little weight, there’s almost no work for the motor to do apart from propel the car forwards. Around corners, this thing is on rails. There’s no corner this Cervo wont take. If you go in too fast, just dab the brakes and the LSD will bring the nose around. This is something I also noticed in the SX4. The Cervo flies around the track effortlessly with no problems at all.

After a few races my best lap is only 56.693. Clearly I’m nowhere near as experienced with this car and track as Dragonthing is, but it does do its job of making fast money. 300k every 3 minutes is amazing in a car like this. This little Cervo managed to pay for itself, the SX4, the 500RS and the 350GT I’ve purchased for the sake of reviewing Dragonthing’s tunes, just in a few races.

dHZzx.jpg

This is another 10/10 tune from Dragonthing, which is well-deserved seeing as it’s one of her first tunes posted at GTP. It’s built for a purpose and it fulfils it ten times over. Because of all the racing I did, I actually went up an A-spec level too! This car is very addictive to drive, but really, it’s a great little tune.

Yay! :D another success for me, glad you enjoyed it! It really is a scarily fast car through corners, even on racing meds and hards it still stays glued to the racetrack all the time. Glad you didn't beat my time either :embarrassed: I was driving on the absolute edge, barely needed to brake more than a few taps...I'd love to see someone beat my time on that track in this :D I only recently realised I have driven the seasonals so much I have done over 600 miles in this one car...

Just wanted to say , this tune dominates on the Nür Nostalgia Seasonal event, and makes the car very fun to drive. I only dropped the compression dampers to 6/6 for added stability for my daring lines on this track. A1:tup:
oh, and no chassis reinforcements for me, none was needed on this car. a 1965 car that drives and handles to go where you want it to, the definitive rail car.

Thanks! :D I shall be sure to try out the compression at 6/6 and possibly update the tune. I have a new gearbox for it when using the High RPM Turbo to get the edge on thise Miuras :D

As far as handling goes, this still astounds me. Compared to it's original setup, this is an X2010, almost no noticeable 4WD understeer and great stability, with constant torque available from lower RPMs and an amazing sound too, since it finally puts those huge twin exhausts to good use :D

Description: Here we have something special, and a first for me. Since the recent release of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe (aka the 1M) I'm sure people have been pondering whether someone at BMW would be bonkers enough to create the 1M CSL...and here she is, custom built by Dragon's Tuning.

Long story short, this is actually a request from VtiRoj of RKM, who wanted a BMW 135i to beat the German League B Nurburging race for 85,000cr. I happily set to work squeezing every last cent out of my budget until, for exactly 85 grand, this 1-series was born, and after much pondering over a red velvet cupcake or two, I decided it should be the 1M CSL...

With it's engine power boosted up to 355bhp - 20 more than the standard 1M - and weight shaved in CSL tradition by a massive 160kg (down to 1400kg), the CSL here is a rough and ready coupe that goes one further than it's base car, the 1M. And as shown in the photos above, it also come sporting new carbon fibre front aero and 19-inch BBS alloy wheels.
