Yeah I bought it too for PC. And it's actually funner than I thought. Don't think I'll get bored with the melee system for a while.
I have the X1 version. Dying light is made by the same developer that created Dead Island. So I knew I would like this game. Played it for a couple hours last night and indeed, it is very fun. Always a good time looting bodies and it rewards you for exploring the map. Crafting is even more rewarding in this game.
Co-op can be immensely amusing with what you can do to those poor zombies.

I unlocked co-op last night so I am looking forward to diving into co-op mode tonight. If you liked the Dead Island games, you will like Dying Light. :D

I have almost five hundred hours on DI and over three hundred on DI:Riptide, so I fully agree.

Talking of rewards for exploring the map, I found this room under the stairs in one of the houses - nice Easter Egg.

Quite belatedly, I found out that in the game options, you can turn off the HUD so the PS4 screen shot function via share isn't left so cluttered with unwanted stuff:

Of course, that means you will need to keep an eye open for zombies yourself as you'll have no mini-map to warn you. Sounds like a good challenge, to complete the game like that.

Yep, lots of attention for this game now...[/sarcasm] Shame really, as The Following DLC is long (not yet completed it after a full week) and is lots of fun to play; adding a fair amount of newness to it all, plus new weapons, blueprints and of course the buggy.

We now have higher difficulty levels too.

Completed The Following story now, interesting ending. Been roaming around since, picking up some loose ends, mostly special blueprints from
the twins: Tolga and Fatin
I really like Czesiu's super zombie grenade that acts like a rapture for zombies...and then there's the teleport device...

Realised after completing The Following, that I hadn't actually completed the main campaign :embarrassed: so I did that today - gods that was a fraught run and then a climb - you don't want to be afraid of heights and doing this...fair warning.

I could never get into the story for the base game. After wrapping it up the other day, there's nothing special about it. And the villain, Rais, he's pathetic not only because he's a terrible human being. But he cannot even act as a good villain. And Crane... I wish Techland made him a silent protagonist. Generic and blank as he is he might as well have been.

The main story was really just a vehicle for the open world maps to get explored in, and for the side missions too. With Techland games, you really play the game for the gameplay, which is something that they allow you to do in your own time and way (mostly.) Personally, I enjoyed it all and there was some good humour in there too.

I'm not really understanding what about Rais being a bad person makes him pathetic?

Yeah, I understand that.

It's mostly because he's never fleshed-out. He's just there to be the villain, nothing more. His planning is terrible, and his motives are a blur. Especially towards the end when I didn't care whether Rais died or not.

Have you completed the DLC (The Following) yet? Just like with Dead Island and DI:Riptide the story gets a tweak with regards to Rais and his motives.

I recently bought the full expanded Dying Light from the PS Store, having never played it before, and I have really enjoyed playing and finishing the main campaign, and am now a fair way through the following, which is even better.

With that said, I completely agree with you regarding how weak the campaign story is. It seems like Techland essentially tried to make Rais like Vaas from Far Cry 3, but fell a loooooong way short of capturing the unique, off the charts crazy character that Vaas oozed. Actually, come to think of it, Dying Light seems to borrow very heavily from the Far Cry series. I do really like the game, but it feels like it's kind of just cobbled together a bunch of other people's ideas at times.

The worst part of the game is the pathetic "boss battle" with Rais. You spend the entire campaign building towards this showdown with Rais, that in the end is nothing more than a 1 minute QTE. LAME! I was a bit pissed about that lol.

Thoroughly enjoying the following so far though I must say! Story still isn't very strong, but so far isn't as weak as the campaign's. But, more importantly, the gameplay is even better. The enemies are much more varied, and the freaks are proper bosses, which the campaign was sorely missing.

Thanks for the heads up about the hud. I made it to the 2nd city last night. Such a beautiful game with very impressive draw distance.

This entire scene was terrifying.

I'm very tempted by this, worth paying another £12 or so for the Following DLC?
Very worth it. I had last week off work and it took most of that week to even get through the story - there is plenty to do and explore, plus it changes the game quite a bit suddenly being in open fields and being able to drive a buggy.

@CAMAROBOY69 glad you enjoy the HUD-less option :) Old Town is a very rich environment and quite vertical. Have fun.

The buggy is very fun and can be customized. Reminds me of driving the buggy in Half Life 2 or in The Crew. Very enjoyable mowing through fields of zombies.

Old Town has been fun but I feel I went there a bit early and under leveled. I am only around level 12 and get pretty tore up at night. Luckily one of my friends is a high level and helps a lot. The grapple hook is a blast! Reminds me of playing Just Cause or Far Cry 4. Really enjoying this game a lot. Co-op is so much fun.

I kind of did the same. I didn't do many of the side missions at all before I got to old town, so I was pretty low level. I'm glad I did it that way though, as it made the game much harder. A friend of mine went all out on side missions and leveling up stats before focusing on the story missions, and said it made the main game way too easy, and led to him getting bored of the game before finishing it.

Missed it myself as I was at work, then asleep, but last night the game got an update of over 1Gb which brought the following community maps for free.

Under the City
The Hunter
Climb Down to 21
Teevee

I got some time today to give the community maps a go. I really liked the Harran Ride one, which I think must have been set to a pretty high level as the zombies were damn brutal; it was also varied enough.

Then there was the 'escape the house' map - a nice parody on the PT demo.

If it's just mindless mayhem you want - then 'The Hunter' is a good one, giving you a taste of the Bozak bow and a forest full of zombies to chop up or shoot...your choice.

I played the demo of this earlier, I found it a bit hard to get in to. Is the need to level your character that strong?

Two or three swipes in an attack and the character is goosed? Seems to be that I need more distraction and run techniques at the start against the undead, but what about against living? I came across one group holding some hostage and had a very average fight with them, that felt so drawn out.

for me it is a survival game,.. and it does a good job at it,..

but i also see some people soloing 20 or more zombie's, but i played for +- 12 hours, and i have a hard time against more than 3 zombies and more than 2 living people.

maybe someone else can clarify a bit more?

Yes, you have to level up if you want to stand a chance against Rais' thugs or zombies. Once abilities like Tackle or Head Kick become available, get them immediately.

Don't try to kill a horde of zombies or thugs. Keep some distance and handle them one at a time. Keep checking behind you as well. And try aiming for the head, since there's a good chance to decapitate them.

And for Virals, get to a high point and attack them as they climb up.

Don't try nighttime until you know the map well.

They probably have very strong weapons. Another thing too is to craft as many weapons with status effects as possible. And once the bow and arrow becomes available, buy it immediately.

Does someone mind giving me some idea of what this game is like? I mean I've read through here a little, and seen pictures and videos, but I still am not sure if it's for me. What is the purpose? How open is the world? How difficult? Customization?

I do appreciate it :)

The purpose is to kill zombies and random thugs.

Very open. They're two main areas you can explore, in addition to several interior areas. The Following DLC also adds the Countryside that's much larger than the first two areas, so a buggy is added. However I recommend completing the first two areas first. There's also a number of side quests. Some of them are interesting, some of them are decent at best.

Quite difficult at first. But as you level up the game becomes a bit less of a survival game. You can compensate for that by upping the difficulty mode to Hard or Nightmare, but even to me who has pretty much reached endgame it doesn't feel any more survival. Though nighttime remains difficult.

You can change your appearance with some outfits. You also craft special weapons based off of blueprints you find. Since melee weapons have condition in this game (interestingly guns do not have condition), you need to carry a couple good ones with you.

Sounds fun! So do you like return to a home base or are you endlessly walking around getting new items and completing missions?
