Elegance Automotive Guild - Remembering TurnLeft.

I couldn't resist a look at the 300SL when it appeared in the thread title. I hadn't looked at the thread before - great concept

I hastily built the Merc this morning in and attempted a run around the Nordschleife. Which was probably a mistake on two counts: I've not been there for a while, and I haven't done a fat lot ABS 0 driving in GT6, let alone on CM tyres .

Luckily most the Ring is pretty ingrained now and only a couple of corners caught me out, but the ABS/CM combo took a bit of getting used to - especially with the DS3 triggers lack of progression. The first complete lap involved some bent panels :ouch: but the second lap only a couple of excursions onto the grass, with a slow spin at the end of the lap trying to make that right-hander before the pits (where @ALB123 hit the wall I think). Red lap at 9:20 .

The car drives really nicely guys, and has quite a natural feel to it - I suspect partly because the tyres are close to a real road tyre. A bit of understeer off the throttle and tightens up when power is applied. You can get it into a 4 wheel drift or provoke it to stick the back end out; more care with the throttle gives you good traction though. A very nicely considered and balanced tune 👍.

I did lower the BB a little (3/8 I think) for the controller and didn't lock up so much. Can't wait to try with my old wheel and sponge ball brake pedal. I think I'll be aiming for a 9:00 lap :dopey:.

Thanks for stopping by and for your compliments :) I'm glad you liked it and I'm sure @TurnLeft and @Brewguy44 will be too. We really appreciate the feedback, it's always good to hear

So the name of the car alone drew you in did it!? I'm glad the PR department got that one right (or I'd be getting my pay cut:sly:) I'm glad you went with the ABS 0 and made some adjustments to the brake balance to suit you more (Watch out TL is calling 4/10 Chicken mode. I'm at 4/6 for my preference so :P to that ) I'm still using a DS3 with a

Anyway I'm really happy you enjoyed using the car and hope you have some more fun behind the wheel. Please be sure to come back and share your Lap-time for the Green Hell, I want enough people on the scoreboard that TL needs to make a bigger one :D Well, he's got 3 new office chicks and they need to be kept busy

So, I haven't been around much since yesterday so I haven't had time to post anything about the thrashing @TurnLeft put on me & @Brewguy44 at the Nordschleife with the AEG M.B. 300 SL. When I was invited to join them on the track I didn't realize we would be racing. I thought, since the cars were brand new to all of us, that we would just be playing follow the leader or cat & mouse. Then I realized that these guys were playing for keeps and the lights turned green!!
I was halfway through my first lap when you came in and I was just about to tell @Brewguy44 to meet you at the start and play a little cat & mouse when the race counter appeared :scared:, I wasn't ready for this either.

Nice account of the race 👍, BG surprised me by being very steady :odd:, and you were very fast, how many times did you catch up to me after losing it ? If we do make a race at this track it will be important to stick close to the leaders, especially on the last straight. I was really far from both of you and you both caught me up thanks to the slipstream, which seams to be very effective with this car. Should make a very exciting race.

Welcome aboard sir :), glad you found it fun to drive and hope you enjoy this thread. You'll find that it doesn't take very long to get use to ABS/0, and it adds a little more realism to the driving experience. BTW I use the BB 4/10 chicken setup :D, that's why I called it that .

You may post your best lap at the Green Monster at anytime and we'll be very happy to add it to our Grand Tour scoreboard, you may also post any victory you make with this car or the previous and we'll commemorate it for prosperity . If you like on line races (I just discovered this ) you can check out this club,
RIDOX Replica Garage Fan Club, a few of the people that come here meet for some fun racing about once a week, all with no driving aids, don't have to worry about skill levels because we have them all mixed up together.

Thank you for dropping by  and at the pleasure of having you come back again. (PS:This will be the last time that I use such formal writing, the guy from the PR :scared: is always checking up on me when someone new comes by, I swear confidence is so hard to get sometimes )

Well, he's got 3 new office chicks and they need to be kept busy
Firstly sir, they are secretaries , secondly, have you seen them?

[ALERT] aah I see it's my friend @danbojte who's writing something .. hold on .... yup he's using the same chicken setup as me, BTW @Thorin Cain the rear wheels don't lockup up at 10 :mischievous:.

 to you all.

Firstly sir, they are secretaries , secondly, have you seen them?
My apologies good sir and no. I haven't seen them since...well, I'm not really sure I can't say :embarrassed:
BTW @Thorin Cain the rear wheels don't lockup up at 10 :mischievous:.
I'm quite aware of this thank you very much 👍 It's a bike thing, you wouldn't understand! (I'm sure I've heard something similar to that round here:odd:) If you could adjust your handbrake strength separate from your BB I'd have all my brakes set to x/0 and change controller to have two brake buttons, front and rear:lol:

Just a small update on the new car from EAG. Been testing this car since it was first posted & i've been very impressed with it so far. I'm not going to post an official lap time yet as i know i can improve.
I first tested on Sports Tyres just to get a feel for how it handled then switched to the Comfort Tyres. I found it took more concentration to drive than the Corvette but handled very nicely. I'm going to be testing again tonight at Nurburgring & if i improve my time enough will post it in the morning. I might even test at Sierra to see how it compares to the first EAG car.

One quick question. Am i allowed to use the Aero Kit? I wanted to build the car how it looked in the pictures posted & as it had the aero kit fitted i chose to do the same.

What colour car did you all buy at the dealership? I chose black to give me the nice beige coloured interior which matches the body colour nicely.

I've also sent a few of you a friend request so maybe we can meet online sometime & test together.

My forum name is Gyro1780 & PSN is Spoox777.

Thanks a lot

It does have the Aero Kit A, it`s in the PDF but I think @Thorin Cain might have forgotten that on the post. Can`t be too long because I`m at work and really shouldn`t be doing this .

Yes I got your message but it took me 1/2 hour to figure out who Spoox777 was 👍, would be happy to meet on line, @Brewguy44 has the track set out, I`ll give you the details when I get home .

Yeah, sorry about that. The Aero kit has been used and the car should be bought in Schwartz for the Crème Interior. @TurnLeft is correct, I included these details when I did the Body department write-up but forgot to put that information in the post :guilty:
I'll go fix those to avoid further confusion 👍

Good luck on the Ring 👍

Also check your friends list on PSN :D:tup::cheers:

So, I haven't been around much since yesterday so I haven't had time to post anything about the thrashing @TurnLeft put on me & @Brewguy44 at the Nordschleife with the AEG M.B. 300 SL. When I was invited to join them on the track I didn't realize we would be racing. I thought, since the cars were brand new to all of us, that we would just be playing follow the leader or cat & mouse. Then I realized that these guys were playing for keeps and the lights turned green!!

I had a terrible launch and quickly lost my starting position of 2nd place, putting me in 3rd by the first turn! I had only one lap of "experience" with the Benz 300 SL and it was showing right away. From last place I watched both TurnLeft and Brewguy negotiate the turns with a lot of grace. Their turns were smooth, yet fast. My turns were anything but. My rear tires were sliding and I was starting to lose time to my opponents before we even got to Aremberg. Things were not looking good.

While CM tires do not provide a tremendous amount of grip, the 300 SL isn't the most powerful car in any of our garage's, so you shouldn't experience a whole lot of trouble unless you really overdrive the car through the corners, bends & kinks. Most of the first lap was rather uneventful. TurnLeft and Brewguy kept driving very well while I continued to catch up to them only to quickly drop back 6 or 7 car lengths. Since the three of us are pretty much equally skilled drivers and the car doesn't have a boatload of torque or power, I thought it would be very difficult to pass. First of all, the Nordschleife is a very narrow track which makes passing difficult to begin with, but with the lack of torque, I figured the only way BrewGuy was going to get around TurnLeft would be if he pushed TL mentally and forced TL to screw up a turn. Then, I could see BG slipping past him.

When we hit the long back straight the positions remained unchanged. Thankfully, even though I wasn't on BG's bumper I was close enough to him to draft. I inched closer to BG's rear end and our combined aerodynamic advantage pushed us BOTH closer to TurnLeft. Could it happen? Could our draft work well enough to get one of us around TL? It seemed like TL was doing his best to keep his lead by keeping BG out of drafting him, but we continued to gain. Finally, just before we reached the top of the hill, both BrewGuy and I passed TurnLeft, on his left!!! :D :P

I would be lying if I said I wasn't screaming and cheering myself on during this whole draft down the straightaway. Initially, I didn't think anything more than just trying to draft BG and possibly pass him before we reached the bridge and kink. When we both drove past him I had a new decision to make. Do I keep my foot to the floor and pray that my CM tires hold? Or do I concede 1st place to BG and slip into 2nd place? My foot stayed to the floor and my tires held my car steady and true! A quick peek in the rear view mirror revealed both BG and LT sliding into the grassy area. 1st place was all mine and only I could screw it up from this point on...and that's exactly what happened.

Slowly I applied my brakes near the bottom of the hill, scrubbing just enough speed away to take those short left & rights. I started applying even more braking force as I was approaching the end of the run, just before the right hander that appears before the entrance to the pits. Apparently, I didn't apply enough brakes because I went head-first right into the red & white wall! :banghead: My car spun 180 degrees and came to a stop and I was facing two fast approaching Mercedes Benz 300 SL's. TL shot past and BG ran into my obstructing car. By time we got straightened out, TL was already making the right-hand turn onto the start/finish straight...

To be honest, I didn't know we were running two laps at that point. Once I saw TL go around the first turn on my mini-map I realized I wasn't done embarrassing myself just yet. The rest of the race wasn't very exciting. But that first lap, the way it finished, is one to be remembered. It was probably the best pass I've ever pulled off while racing real people. I don't race real people often and when I do I get very, very nervous. When I got into 1st place I was so freakin' excited...and I threw it all away.

In all fairness to TurnLeft, I seriously wouldn't have been surprised if he reclaimed the lead on lap #2, even if I hadn't crashed at the end of lap #1. He was driving much, much smoother than I was. The same for BeerGuy...I was behind both of them long enough to know that they both drove better than me last night. My hats off to both of them.

Don't sell yourself short, you're a great driver it's just I'm been doing a lot of testing at The Ring so it gave me a little advantage and I sometimes test my tunes there also. At first when it was added in GT3, I Hated It!! It was To long, To many curves and bumps, but the more I drove it the more I got to know it and now I Love driving it.

It was a helluva lot of fun driving the new car with TL and you!! 👍 We'll have to do it again but with TC also.

4/10 brake balance on the Benz? Really? I'll have to try that as soon as I hop on the PS3 tonight. I've followed @danbojte's advice with the 370Z from Ridox Garage and took it to SSRX and slammed on the brakes at different brake settings to measure lockup, but I hadn't done that with the 300 SL yet. I'll have to try 4/10, just to see what I think. 👍

The Nordschleife was added in GT3.
I've heard & read about people saying it is the hardest track in the world to learn and it is. Over 20km long & 156 turns, that's going to take some practice. Then you have to learn it all over again in the wet. If I had a dollar for every lap I've done there, I could buy the real track and shout us all a track day weapon of choice!
It may take a while but, when you know where the track goes and where the little bumps are waiting to upset your plans, which red & white kerbs you can ride or kiss and which ones to avoid like the plague, the pleasure of stitching together a complete lap is magnificent! There is so much time to be had on the stopwatch when you get a flow going. Practice, practice and practice some more.
It's only when you're comfortable with your car of choice and the track that you can eke out those last seconds or, better still, tenths of a second and, that applies to anywhere with a start/finish line.

The Nordschleife was added in GT3.

Thanks, I wasn't sure when it was added. Now I know every curve and turn. It's so much Fun to drive it now!!! I have a helluva lot of fun testing different cars on it. It's the Ultimate Test Track!!! (In My Opinion) 👍

Cheers Smiley.gif

@Thorin Cain , @Brewguy44 & me :odd:, the trophy room has been updated with your prizes.
EAG Mercedes 300SL '54 Trophy Room

@Gyro1780 , the Club # is 1021078, "Brewguys Racing Club " , this goes for all our friends here who want to take it on some casual racing. Hey @Brewguy44 could you please put on the tire wear to fast so we can test it :sly:.

Looks like we have a new Drift King in the club
, Drift King of my street, Brewguy got 5516 and you 5411 👍, but it did feel good to finally get one .

Yes, really , in fact if the rear could have went up to 11 or 12 I would have used it. The preprogrammed BB for this car is very strong on the front, this is one of the things PD has programmed individually, every car has it's own BB balance (ask our guru @Ridox2JZGTE ). As for the suggestion from @danbojte that is a very good one 👍, I personally use Tsukuba, as you start on the track just slam the brakes before the curve going to the start. From my tests that I've done it is not of the outmost importance that you reach full speed, even at 100 kmh the wheels will lockup, the difference in speed will only change at what speed they will start there lockup, there is a ratio that can be calculated by I just haven't got around to it yet. What effects lockup is weight and suspension settings, also PD have added that when going down a hill your car will add weight force according to the slope, so testing for BB for Mount Panorama on a flat surface would give you unwanted results, better use that track or another track that has the same slope. For a full analysis of using abs/0 go to Breaking Brakes 👍

It's only when you're comfortable with your car of choice and the track that you can eke out those last seconds or, better still, tenths of a second and, that applies to anywhere with a start/finish line.
And that will happen in about 100 years for me . It's a great track for the driving experience, always a new adventure with different results , but for tuning I prefer much shorter tracks where you can save your best lap and go to the data logger 3 to 4 times faster than there :sly:.

Me too ;) Especially the first bit  I'm going to attempt some clean runs in the morning and try and get myself on the board at least. I'll send some snaps from my trip :D

When you get in a good drift, there's nothing like that feeling of I'm Doing It!!! 👍 :D

Well I'd seen the thread floating about and some of the chaps mention the C1 in seasonal threads, but the Vette didn't draw me in like the Merc :guilty:, I'll be trying out the other tunes though.

I'm not strictly a no ABS virgin  - I did a lot of driving without ABS in GT5 (when I seemed to have more time ) and got proficient with both wheel and DS3 (that was when I switched to triggers). I kind of drifted away when I started online racing (late on) - I couldn't drive against ABS users, couldn't do with keep changing my setups and driving, and went back to the Dark Side.

Yes, I see our Romanian friend @danbojte is doing these races with you. I used to do the some Nordschleife races with @CyKosis1973 (currently MIA) and some of the COTHO guys, and regularly watched the tail lights of dan, Cy and @NEWDRIVER2 disappear off into the distance as I got back onto the tarmac at Ardenauer Forst :ouch::dunce:. I'll keep a look out.

The wife is supposed to be out tonight, so once the kids are in bed I'll dust off the venerable DF Pro, and take the Merc for a nice drive around the North Loop, hopefully without bending that expensive looking tubular chassis :dopey:.

@Pete05, I had a look at the transmission. If you leave the Final gear at 3.640 (stock) and set top speed to 205mph all the ratios are doable 👍

I decided today was the day for some fun in the Mercedes so I got her ready and before heading to the Ring I took a little trip down Cape Ring way for a spot of sideways shenanigans. Just to see what all the fuss was about. Now this isn't my first drifting gold ever, but it was probably the quickest. 1 run, 7 corners, 5.093 points and a Matt Light Green paint chip later :D I didn't know we made a drift car  Ok, time to head to the Eifel Mountains for a few crashes and smashes :ouch:

I did have a run out there but kept messing up somewhere and going RED I'll get back to you when I can get round there in one piece

That's probably where I recognise the name from :banghead: the old COTHO garage(s). I use to wander over there often to see what gems were tucked away in there. I miss those guys :( I've still got some of their cars in my garage, shhh don't tell them

Hope you have fun over there on the worlds best toll road:cheers:

@ThorinCain
Thanks for doing the homework on the transmission TC  I'll get my crew onto the Gullwing ASAP.
Now if I only I could find my delicate 👍 for ABS 0. Has anyone found a suitable bias setting for tackling the Nordschleife?

Glad to see your getting used to turning left with the wheels pointed right. It's almost feels like driving a forklift
