People complaining about this are hilarious.
The name is stupid but so is the app , even before the EV welfare mooch scam man bought it .
I gather this is one of those what traipses in with a random bitchfit and then nopes out.

'Twitter' and more so 'tweeting' is such a well established concept and so ingrained culturally that i can't see that easily changing to something else. Especially not 'X'. Elon, stop trying to make 'X' a thing.

Zuckerberg understands this which is why Meta is just the parent company but the brand is still Facebook, even though the platform has evolved well beyond what the name evoked originally. WhatsApp is still WhatsApp, it's not Meta Instant Messaging and Instagram is still Instagram and not Meta Photo & Video Sharing. You've got to understand the power of 'the brand' and what that means to people.

Main reason is what you said. Secondary reason is to create his X.com paradise (which will fail).
If he wanted X.com to be a thing, he didn’t need to buy Twitter. With his standing in conservative circles, he could’ve paid a few million $ to build a copy-paste Twitter, gone on Joe Rogan to promote it and had people and advertisers flocking to it in minutes. A perfect and profitable X logo’d conservative echo chamber.

All his decisions; the name, the charging for blue ticks, the arguments with celebrity users, would be a lot more defensible if it was a new platform and this is just how it was from the outset.

At this stage, it does feel like a deliberate destruction of the “online town hall”. I figured there’d be a financial reason he’s doing this, but maybe I’m giving him too much credit. Maybe it’s just a straight up vendetta.

Jordan pays me too well for me to protest.
You seem to complain about the donuts. Elon will offer less donuts and ask you to sleep... in North Dakota.

It's still fair to recognize that there is a social cost to this. As fun as the dumpster fire of Elon burning his (or other people's) money and making a fool of himself publicly is, there is a real global social loss to be recognized. It does make me wish that twitter's board had believed in their own vision of the company and refused to sell rather than making a quick buck and relegating twitter to the dumpster fire we all knew was coming.
For a time it looked like there might actually be something of a positive as people were looking into decentralized options like Mastodon, but now that Threads is a thing I feel like all this is serving to do is drive people even deeper into Meta/Facebook's ecosystem and have the exact opposite effect. As much as Elon is squalling about it he's actually giving Zuckerberg a huge assist by providing people more of a reason to go over to try Threads, and likely stay there if it provides a similar enough experience.

LOL but you'll have to fight the Chinese webhoster which is currently using the URL. Maybe xplanet.tb instead? 🤓

I don't see why not. It's not like you can just trademark a letter or two...
Every RPG or CarPG which has ever used the term as an abbreviation for experience points is in big trouble if this is the case.

Elon also took over the @X handle and offered the original owner some merch afterwards

San Francisco-based photographer Gene X Hwang was @X on Twitter from March 2007 until yesterday. "They just took it essentially—kinda what I thought might happen," Hwang told The Telegraph. "They did send an email saying it is the property of 'x' essentially."

Hwang confirmed to Ars today that "there was no financial compensation" offered to him. The company offered "to switch the @x account and its history/followers etc to a new handle once I select one that is available," Hwang told us. "They also offered some merch and to meet with the management team as well."

Hwang said he doesn't feel any "need to meet with the management since I am not sure what that convo would be really." The meeting would probably be "awkward," he said.

If he decides to stay, his new handle should be @ElonstolemyX

Besmerched

Thanks, going to the trademark office.

Dear [insert name of corporate entity here]:

Do you remember how a few months ago we attached a gold checkmark to your Twitter 𝕏 account in a rather hollow gesture to combat the hordes of trolls who paid us $8 to impersonate you and successfully did so for quite some time? Well, if you don't buy advertising on here, we're going to take that away even though it really didn't do anything to help the problem and you didn't actually ask for it in the first place.

We're offering discounts! And ice cream!*

Regards,

Elon Musk
Stable Genius

*there actually isn't any ice cream, we can't afford it
