Emissions scandals thread

What about all the affected cars which were remapped and or chiptuned? Do they still have this illegal software?

No, the definite proof that diesel can never be clean is that diesel, like petrol, is a fossile fuel.
That was not the context of the discussion, nor is it about the entire thread. Clean here is used in the meaning that it abides by the set regulations.

There have been diesel engines before that have passed such regulations, therefore counting as clean. It's a no-🤬-brainer that burning oil emits noxious/poisonous/toxic gasses, of which none are clean nor healthy.

I imagine those which have been tuned to meet requirements have suffered greatly in performance. Whether or not the software was actually extracted or only renamed not to start up on ignition is a question for those who actually did the work and have reported on it (of which I've been unable to find).

The only way the 2.0 can make it is if it is tuned like I mentioned above, or an extremely costly urea filtering hardware is installed onto each individual vehicle (of which VW has to pay for and receives no profit, so my guess is a remap will occur).

Oh but you did:

It is just VW known to be cheating the test, and only in some cases. The BMW to which you refer is only an example of a car not getting the same real world emissions as test emissions - which probably applies to every car.

I didn't directly say 'BMW or other manufacturers have cheated', because we'd already established they hadn't. Still I got my wires crossed with yours as I misread your post. I was simply talking about other manufacturers having failed emissions test; not necessarily deliberately. Hyundai did do it on purpose but that was a case of misrepresentation, as opposed to software trickery. Posting that as a response to a post were you spoke specifically about cheating made it seem as if that was what I was implying however. Apologies.

The article conflates cheating the test - something only VW is known to do - with getting higher emissions in the real world. It is badly written and creates the impression that not getting the same real-world emissions as the car gets in the initial emissions test is what the kerfuffle is about and that any car that does so has cheated the test.

Fair enough! To me the article simply seemed to be talking about the possibility, rather than trying to make two different things out to be one and the same. But I'm not a journalist or professional writer or anything; so I'm not the best at telling if something is well written, or not.

Here in Belgium, most people won't lose faith in diesel. Problem is that their bankaccount/wallet is more important than their health and air pollution. Driving a diesel is less expensive than driving a gasoline engine. The Belgian government is looking into making diesel as expensive as gasoline. If they succeed, more people are going to buy a gasoline car rather than a diesel. But not because of what VW did. It's all about how expensive a car is to drive daily.

Some people lost faith in VW not in the fuel (diesel) in general.

At the moment, yes. However I'm talking about what might happen if other manufacturers are found to be cheating, and a there's big furore about diesel not being as clean. I want to stress the word if; this is a hypothetical scenario that could happen. Because quite a few people seem to think I'm suggesting this is happening already. Which I'm not.

I'm not one of them. :D

I just read an article on a website of a Belgian newspaper and what I said is already happening. People are still buying VW and these VW are still diesels (newer diesel engine version, not the cheat device version).
The article also mentioned what I said before. They don't care about the air, their health. As long as the car looks good, drives well and isn't too expensive, they'll buy it.
I know how Belgians think. :D

Whatever happens, Belgains will always look at diesel first (not me though) as long as these cars are less expensive to drive.
Only when diesel is at least as expensive as gasoline or even electric cars, they'll probably stop buying diesel.

I don't get the Suburban reference on there either. If you're that concerned about public health you probably wouldn't even reference a car that does 18mpg combined, even if you're using it to illustrate just how polluting something else is.

The Nazis thing is just hilarious.

It's probably a good idea for TDI owners who are still using their cars to remove the TDI badge from it if incidents like that start to become more common.

So they didn't gather them up like cats in Ypres and chuck them off the bell tower?

I wouldn't buy VW shares until we know the full extent of the damage, it will likely be a huge longterm downtrend until it gets solved.

Probably irrelevant, they're not covered by recall (as far as I know) and normally the whole point is to override any existing performance/emission software.
