F1 201X - Updates & News DiscussionF1 2010-2016

Sandman, most people are probably interested in FPS drops. Did you have a proper go at Monaco? ;)

Monaco is just one of those tracks that Codemasters just can't seem to make run at a FPS that's fun to play.
It's a pity. That track is so much fun when it's playable.

I like the sound of “Champions Mode”, but I’m concerned that it is going to be under-developed. One of the things that I really liked about F1 2011 was the challenge mode, where you were given a pre-determined car to drive around a pre-determined circuit to try and beat a pre-determined laptime – but there were only half a dozen of these challenges, when the selection of twelve cars and nineteen circuits gave thousands of potential combinations. Codemasters really could have put a lot more effort into this, so I’m worried that “Champions Mode” is going to go the same way with a limited gameplay mode that only explores a bit of its potential.

And would it have killed them to get the drivers to do a bit of voicework when you accept the challenge? Right now, it’s just Kimi Raikkonen glowering at you. Maybe the licence with FOM limits it – Codemasters apparently have to use the helmets for F1 Race Stars instead of showing the drivers’ faces during the game. Perhaps the same applies here, though if FOM have any sense, they’ll let Codemasters go for it next time. Anything that makes the game more accessible to the player can only be a good thing. It’s a bit like David Croft referring to the player as “[Raikkonen's] team-mate in the second Lotus” rather than by name, which strikes me as a bit odd because in the past they have programmed the game and recorded dialogue that allowed the in-game commentators to refer to the player by name.

I had never noticed that you only see them in helmets and that they don't really same the names that much, but now I come to think of it it's like they either forgot or weren't allowed to include it. It would make the game a whole lot better just including them tiny things. When you are in the career menu, you can see the drivers walking past talking to press/team, and in my opinion it looks nothing like them and just looks like they rushed the detail on their faces etc, maybe this could be why they left them out because they couldn't get enough detail and 'jokers' would write bad reports about the game or they felt there was no point because they knew they couldn't get enough detail.

Faces can be notoriously difficult to model accurately, particularly for a developer like Codemasters with little to no expeirence in it.

The handling looks very "floaty" to me, I love the precise and grippy handling 2010 offers over 2011's any day. Either way, got this preordered for £32 from Sainsbury's Entertainment.

Yes that is a very good point but it would be a nice touch if they tried.
And the drivers voices would be a nice touch too, considering how easy it is to 're-create' Raikkonen's voice as it is just one dreary tone of voice that never changes whether he is happy or sad. But either way, it's the driving that counts.

If Raikkonen is unwilling, they could get James Hinchcliffe to impersonate him and you'd never know the difference ...

I dont think I'll be buying this one though, I'll probably wait until the new regulations in 2014 untill I pick up a new version. I'm fine with playing 2011 instead of spending $60 on a broken game again this year. Also, I don't want to have to look at this years ugly cars while im racing

Haha good one 👍. I was waiting for someone to reply with something similar to that.

Here's a new video.

Codemasters need to learn to clip the apex, they missed nearly every one. Anyway the game looks even better in this video. The drivers hand movement seems a lot smoother than before and the Sun's shine/shadows on the car and surroundings seems better too.

You do realise that the purpose of the video is to show off a lap of the circuit, rather than set a fast lap time ... right?

Yes but considering one of the game developers is Anthony Davidson ex Super Aguri driver and Brawn test driver, you would think they would make an effort to show what lines are best and the most realistic to the real world. I can understand it isn't supposed to be a 'fast lap' but it would have looked more professional if they would at least get the lines right.

F1 never raced there, so we will have to see where the correct line is.

Nah, I get what you mean, but it's not that off. I mean, the car is steered towards the appex, just not hitting all rumble strips.

Codemasters throw us a bone, let's chew on it.
