F1 201X - Updates & News DiscussionF1 2010-2016

‘what is this new thing? Oh, Champion Mode? I think I’ll try that out.’”

The mode in question reflects the staggering line up of talent competing in the sport this year. Each of the six current superstars has specific events calling you to beat them. The first is Kimi Raikonnen, starting a half dozen positions ahead of you but on worn tires. To advance, you have to chase him down in your freshly kitted vehicle and complete the circuit ahead of him. Beat him and it’s Lewis Hamilton’s turn, taking him on in a wet weather race – and as much of a cliché as it is for the British racer to be caught in the rain, it makes for superbly thrilling race material.

Another new addition is the Season Challenge, targeted at players who don’t necessarily have the time to commit to a lengthy F1 gaming session. Breaking a drivers’ career down to ten races, it brings all the essential F1 elements together in bite size chunks. Conversely, the full career mode will take you from the Young Drivers Test out in Abu Dhabi, serving as a brief tutorial, through to joining one of the premier sponsor teams and becoming the best driver in the world. In the course of the lengthy mode, you’ll do a fair bit of globetrotting. Tracks include old favourites such as Silverstone, and new locations – notably, the upcoming Austin, Texas ‘Circuit of the Americas’, due for completion later this year.

The weather system is one of the areas that’s had significant improvement this year. Deemed revolutionary in 2010, it’s operating at a whole new level now. “We spent a lot of time working out on the console what we could do with the weather systems,” Hood says. “We’ve made these storm-fronts which can sweep across the track, and that’s awesome.” The dynamic weather patterns can produce localised effects on different parts of tracks, depending on your location. A longer race might see rain sweep over half of it, demanding a change in your tire strategy or when to make pit stops – not to mention the nightmarish effort of steering a precision vehicle while blinded by back-splatter from the car ahead.

Criticism over 2011’s perceived difficulty should be lessened this year by a streamlined control system. “Making the cars easier to drive on the pad was number one priority for us,” Hood explains. “Yes, we build it and developed on the steering because it gives you a clear focus on what’s going on. Yes, we’re working on the physics engine [but] we want the players to experience the beauty of Formula 1, which differentiates it from other racing series. You can only get to that point if you can stay on the track and drive consistently.”

As well as being more responsive when playing on a pad, quick access commands on the d-pad allow you to select changes to your tire or engine rollout, applied at the next pit stop, or the type of fuel being used. At a lower level, these are nice bonuses but the more you improve, the more you’ll want to explore their impacts on your race. All these small changes can greatly affect the outcome of any race, and along with the likes of KERS and DRS – recent technologies added to the FIA’s rule set since 2009 and 2011, respectively – combine to make F1 2012 ever closer to fully replicating the motorsport

“F1 2012 should come across as a more complete experience, and we’re trying to call out the things that it has got above and beyond from 2011,” says Hood. “It’s obvious to players what they’re spending their money on this year.”

Really like the sound of the new modes, something different to do instead of just the career mode.

Sounds like they are gonna nail the physics too, 2011's low speed combined with 2010's high speed handling will hopefully make it feel correct.

thanks to all of you guys for keeping us posted on the news/trailers/updates and info!

BIG UPS to ENTERSANDMAN_13 for his work in this thread! Lets keep it goin!

I'm actually really excited about this game, I haven't been this excited about a game since GT5.

Yeah, too bad all those nice new game features will be overshadowed by a trillion bugs.

See, people whinge on and on about the "bugs" in F1 2010 and 2011, but I've never encountered one of them, in several seasons on both games, wet and dry racing, practise, qualifying, racing at Monaco and so on. I can't help but feel that these issues are blown way out of proportion by forum-based whining.

This ^

Incessant whining about bugs just kills any enjoyment some people may actually want from the game. I know I was sick of hearing about F1 2011 bugs before I even had the game, then lo and behold I never encountered any. Yet somehow it marred my experience because I would play expecting something bad to happen. Lesson is not to read forums around a release and just go and enjoy the game.

Agreed. I lurked the Codies forum for a few months prior to 2011's release and got caught up in the hype. After playing the game for a few hours I thought it was pretty much lived up to expectations but after reading the forum again I couldn't play it, it was impossible to ignore bugs that had gone unnoticed but were now unavoidable.

This certainly won't be a day 1 buy but I'l keep an eye on this thread, I would advise everyone not to get too hyped, this is codemasters...

Yeah Sandman, you're doing an awesome job with this thread 👍 And Metallica is probably going to play that song when I see them later this month :)

As for the bugs, just less small, silly bugs would be nice, though I'd still play it even if they're there. The only really, really frustrating bug in 2011 is when you pit for tyres in a race, and leave on the same set, despite the team taking them off and putting another set on. Luckily I've only had that bug 2 or 3 times, but it's the kind of bug that makes you turn off the game and not play it for a few days, and I really hope those are fixed for 2012.

from this article, "It's a balance that Codemasters seems happy with, even if it acknowledges that there's always room for improvement. "We were in one of the team's simulators this week," says Jeal. "The actual handling characteristics that we were experiencing there were really close to where our game is. We're kind of off with the braking - in an F1 car you slam on the pressure and then ease it off, and that's something that's quite difficult to get your head around but it's something that we're going to think about for next year."

Too bad Codies don't pay attention to my boy Nico. Learn em somethin!

It's the high amount of aero and lack of suspension travel, my good men. 👍

Same I've had no problems with either F1 2010 or F1 2011.

Can't wait to get this and it comes out the day after my birthday.

Forgive me if this has been covered but could they not get the graphics up to Forza GT standard? We know the consoles can do it so why don't / haven't codemasters made it so? Is it just a case of the game engine they are using?

I anxious to hear how far they support the new FANATEC CSW wheel base and F-1 Rim for us PS3 users =)

Unlike Turn 10, Codemasters are putting out a new game every year. Turn 10 make the Forza games every other year. So Codemasters are on a much tighter schedule to produce and ship their games, meaning there is less time to dedicate to the graphics, particularly when there are other areas that they want to concentrate their efforts on. A game that looks average but plays well is always better than a game that looks good but does not play very well. And Codemasters have said that they are happy with their graphics.

Besides, while I find Forza to be a very pretty game, I also think it's very limited, particularly when it comes to circuit selection, so there is very little in the way of variety - and good graphics aren't nearly enough to make up for it.

Ah ok, makes sense :)

I find Forza to have enough good tracks, anyway, the problem with tracks isn't a issue in F1 :sly:

Many games/simulators have 'not so great' graphics like rFactor and Live For Speed, but they make up for it with things like Handling and how you feel playing the game.

I think the Codemasters F1 games make up for the ~ok~ graphics with the car handling and career. (How everything works around you)

This is just my opinion and I know people will probably disagree.

Give us PS3 users a proper frame rate and I'll consider this an improvement over last years efforts. :)
I did enjoy 2011 mostly. 👍

And...if it's not too much trouble proper FANATEC CSW wheel support 👍

Looks good! Is September 18th gonna be the release date then?

Hate to burst your bubble but I just found this ::

'F1 2012 out September 21'

on this

It may be wrong but is the first thing that comes up when you search 'F1 2012 Game' on Google.

HOWEVER On different versions of the trailer, for example the Portugese version it says '18th September' but on the English trailer lower down the page in the link above it says '21st of September'. Hmm... A British company selling games earlier in other countries... ?

That is odd. I hope they release here first, but I don't mind waiting 3 days for it.
