Bazz, what platform are you on mate?
Playing it on the PC version. as for the engines blowing up, apparently it isn't just me, saw a massive thread on codemasters forums about it.
For those who need some perspective on my situation. Started the Career driving for Williams on the hardest difficulty (AI = Legend), I'm using a G27 wheel and I'm relatively pleased with where I had my controls (360 rotation 0% linear, which happens to be full linear). After my engine blowing up a number of times in random places I then switched the damage off, and after a few random penalties I set those to reduced.
I qualified in 4th place at Melbourne and finished in 2nd position, 25% distance. I was able to drive past all the cars at the start using kers, later I got passed by webber in DRS zone, other drivers were too slow/cautious to pass but I was slower than the 3rd place car (button). Then I went forward to Malasia and qualified in 7th, higher up was possible but the cars handling makes it very difficult to read (you get a reading on corner entry that you use to predict the car on mid and exit corner, this isn't a very reliable way to play the game like other sims) and I gave up, laptime was around 1:26.9. I haven't finished the 2nd race.
I need to try to clear this up, I'm not finding it difficult to play, I'm finding it difficult to enjoy. The handling model feels like it is restricting me or hindering me rather than allowing me to enjoy, the understeer makes it very difficult to read the car because it isn't a progressive understeer, just under that threshold the car has almost too much grip and then suddenly without a transition you have boat like understeer.
It's hard to explain the handling model properly and why I don't like it, but considering how many people are complaining about understeer I'm guessing I'm not the only one (codies forums are blown up with it).
It's the handling model and the bugs, the penalty system is bugged to hell and can't be turned off.
