F1 TV coverage threadFormula 1

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone could kindly help me. :)

My question is, how much does Sky HD cost for an existing customer, just the most basic HD pack. Only I don't have Sky Sports or HD so I wouldn't be able to watch this channel. Thanks.

If you've got the standard entertainment pack (£20) and then add on the HD pack (£10), you will be able to get the F1 HD channel when its launched. So thats a total of £30 a month
Alternativelly if you've got the entertainment pack and then add the sky sports pack, you will be able to get the Standard definition F1 Channel (I believe this option is ~£40 a month)

Ah ok, that sounds good. 👍

Thanks for the help. :)

I must say that I am looking forward to the Sky F1 coverage next tear with what they're offering :) Still think it should be free to watch though :P

Agree completely, Wish it was still going to be 100% on the BBC, one becuase of the cost, but two becuase they do a great job of it. Having said that, Sky have a track record of producing great sporting events, so lets see if they can top the beeb!

The thing I'm most excited about is the amount of coverage Martin Brundle is going to be doing on the technical side and the mechanics that go on. For me, that is what the sport is all about! :)

Formula 1: BBC announces its 2012 commentary team

The BBC has revealed its Formula 1 presenting team for the 2012 season.

Jake Humphrey remains as presenter, alongside chief analyst Eddie Jordan and co-commentator David Coulthard, while Ben Edwards joins as commentator.

Experienced F1 car designer Gary Anderson has been recruited as technical analyst, while Lee McKenzie remains as pit-lane reporter.

James Allen becomes Radio 5 live commentator, joined by Jennie Gow as radio pit-lane reporter.

Edwards has a wealth of motorsport commentary experience, having commentated on F1 for Eurosport and the former F1 Digital channel.

He has also commentated for Sky on A1 Grand Prix, for Eurosport and ESPN on the US-based Champ Car series (now IndyCars) and most recently on the British Touring Car Championship and Superleague on ITV.

Anderson had a 13-year career as an F1 technical director, starting with Jordan in 1991 before moving to the Stewart and Jaguar teams, plus a second spell with Jordan.

He started his career in the 1970s, graduating to become Brabham's chief mechanic, before moving on to McLaren and then designing cars in other areas of motorsport before joining Jordan for their debut F1 season in 1991.

Since leaving motorsport engineering, he has gained experience in broadcasting, working for Ireland's RTE television station, as well as F1 journalism.

Allen was ITV's lead commentator following Murray Walker's retirement at the end of 2001 until the BBC returned as the UK's F1 broadcaster in 2009.

Gow has previously worked in F1 for BBC Radio 5 live, as well as in MotoGP for BBC Sport.

Ben Gallop, the BBC's head of F1, said: "We're delighted to welcome Ben, James, Gary and Jennie to the BBC presentation team. They bring with them a wealth of experience and knowledge as well as huge passion for the sport that will help bring the season to life for our audiences on TV, radio and online."

Edwards said: "I'm thrilled to be joining the BBC F1 team. It's a dream come true to be broadcasting from grands prix all over the world with such a prestigious broadcaster and such a talented group of people.

"My first stint as commentator coincided with David Coulthard's first season in F1 as a driver, so I am relishing the opportunity to work with him now in conveying the drama, excitement and passion that is wrapped up in each and every event.

"The prospects for the 2012 season are tremendous, with Lewis Hamilton out for revenge, Ferrari determined to give Fernando Alonso a car worthy of him and Sebastian Vettel attempting to become only the third driver in history to score a hat-trick of titles."

Ten races will be shown live on BBC One in 2012, including the British, Monaco and Brazilian grands prix.

The 10 races shown live on BBC One and BBC HD will be: China (15 April), Spain (13 May), Monaco (27 May), Europe (24 June), Britain (8 July), Belgium (2 September), Singapore (23 September), Korea (14 October), Abu Dhabi (4 November) and Brazil (25 November).

There will be extended highlights programmes on BBC One of the other 10, of either 90-minute or two-hour duration depending on the location of the race.

Races in the Far Eastern time zone will have highlights broadcast on BBC One at 2pm, with those in the European time zone getting 90 minutes at 5.30pm.

The BBC's coverage of all the live races will be as extensive as ever, with all the action on and off the track across TV, radio, online, red button and mobile.

There will be full live coverage of both qualifying and race on BBC One, BBC One HD and the BBC Sport website, plus a one-hour evening highlights programme on BBC Three and BBC HD.

For these live BBC races, all three practice sessions will be shown live on the red button and the website.

The F1 Forum will continue on the red button for about an hour of comment and analysis after the programme. It will also be available on the red button and the website after the non-live races.

The presentation team will be at all the races, including those that are not being broadcast live on BBC television.

All 20 grands prix will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 5 live or 5 live sports extra.

Allen said: "I'm really happy. Radio 5 live is the default setting on my radio at home and in the car. It's a great institution and I'm proud to be part of it.

"Anyone who has followed my career knows I love a challenge. This is a time of change in our industry and I see great opportunity here, thanks to the unique place Radio 5 live has in this sport."

The full narrative of every grand prix weekend, including live text and 5 live audio commentary of all on-track sessions as well as news, interviews, pictures and highlights, will also be available on the BBC Sport website.

The BBC Sport website and red button will broadcast live coverage of every second of on-track action for all the races that are live on BBC One and will have highlights of the others.

Thoughts? Allen's back!

ONly thing that concerns me is what I first thought when Ben Edwards was announced as doing commentary, who will do the BTCC now? :(

Much like many pubs are doing currently, would it be cheaper in any circumstances to use other sources for coverage from within the EU?

I think if you have a satellite dish that is a viable option, though you'd probably have to listen to 5Live commentary, which won't be the same without Croft.

I would have gladly given Sky £20 a month to access just the F1 channel through their online services, but we're not given the option to, which is depressing. Can you get a Sky subscription without getting a box/dish?

Next time i'm in town i'll go to the Sky sales desk in the shopping centre and ask about it, but i'm anxious to know how much it would cost and also if I can get it at all, i'm sure they wouldn't turn down my money if I offered them a deal.

After seeing that theirs close to 500 posts I really am not up to going through all 25 pages so someone will have to repeat for my benefit, what will happen from 2018 onward? That is my one worry.

I am concerned that with the deal set to end in 2018 that Sky will decide to have sole rights as they will probably have the money to secure a deal to have sole rights of F1.

I think the cheapest package to get the F1 is about £30 a month, maybe £35.

Diehardracer - Well, it's very possible in 2018 it could go to Sky completely. But we just don't know what'll happen that far ahead, ITV could be in a position to bid again, but unlikely as their financial decisions are on a par with the BBC, with the BBC so far against the wall, the wall is actually falling over.

Be intrigued to see Hill with Sky, always given good inputs in interviews.

Loved reading this news earlier. I really do think now that their coverage is going to be a million times better than the beebs coverage, and that is saying something! Jake, David and EJ do a fantastic job, but i think the money Sky seems to be putting in to this channel is going to produce shows of unprecedented quality..

For 30 quid a month I should bloody well think so! :sly:

I dont think £30 a month is a bad deal, for the amount you get in return.. For £360 a year, you get to see all the races, all the qualifying, all the practices, and the GP2/GP3 support races + build up to everything etc etc (plus like 600 other channels lol)... I paid only £30 less than that for ONE ticket to the British GP.. and i cant even pause or rewind that ;)

I think I know the answer to this, but will the F1 channel be available on Virgin?

Of the tweets I've seen, they don't know yet, but I highly doubt it would. They probably want it to be an incentive to go to Sky...

I'm a student and as I don't need a TV license for anything else, i'm going to have to get that ontop (Which is £145 or thereabouts) so it's going to be closer to £500 for me, which is i'd say is between a half and a third of my annual budget (If you don't include Food, rent and bills).

I had enough trouble justifying the TV license alone.

I. Hate. Sky. Just give me the F1 channel alone for £15 a month, i'd happily do it. £500 for the year is too much.

I'd doubt it. I imagine after forking out for the rights to F1, they'd want to claw back as much as that as possible, from either new subscribers or upgraded packages for existing subscribers.

Do Virgin show any of the Sky channels?

You can buy Sky Sports 1&2 and Sky Movies.

It seems that they are showing it on Vrigin!!! Just not in HD. Now I have to find out if I have to buy the whole Sky Sports package or if I can buy just the F1 channel.

YES and No is the answer.

Virgin Media will be broadcasting the Sky F1 channel in HD for those on the XL TV package and above.

This is a definite as told to me by someone in the Teesside call centre.

I've just checked this and it's available to anyone on Virgin on the Medium package or above, BUT only as a part of a kinda complete Sky Sports package for £22.50 per month (more if you are on Medium only)

Doesn't appear to be available individually. This is all well and good if you are a big footie fan but i'm a casual footie fan and there is no way in hell I will pay that for live coverage of half the races, often with gaps of several weeks. Major Fail.

Oh not to mention, presumably the BBC coverage will be available in HD too? Sky, notably, isn't.

Is it any wonder people seek out sites with live streams? And I won't elaborate on that out of respect for the AUP =)

They've priced a lot of people out of the market with their over-simplified subscription service. There should be a base rate (Maybe £10-15) with an option to pick and choose specifically what channels you want. The Sky Sports premium is for the hundreds of millions if not billions they pay per annum for the football coverage rights; it is severely overpriced if you are wanting to just watch the F1. It makes me sad as I know I can't afford the full package required but I would happily pay £15 a month for that one channel.

If you have Sky you get the F1 channel if you either have the Sky Sports package OR HD.
I've upgraded to HD for £10.25 per month, so you don't have to pay £20- 30 for Sky Sports if you don't want it.
And, yes, Sky's coverage is in HD, as they will get their feed from Bernie the same as everybody else.

If you don't have Sky to begin with, £30 pcm is a lot for one channel (That is ontop of the TV License which I don't currently get as I am a student living in halls). I have complained to Sky themselves, over the phone and in person at one of those Sky support desk things you get in shopping centres; I have money to give them but they have priced me out of the market. I can only afford £15 ontop of the TV license (Which itself is more than £10 a month). I'd say that is reasonable for one channel considering I won't need a box or a dish, i'll just be watching it online.

I've ordered the Sky Sports package for Virgin.

I didn't want to but needs must! :grumpy:
