F1 TV coverage threadFormula 1

I know. I suppose what I meant was this is all for show. MP's appearing to to be intervening on behalf of people when everyone knows nothing can be done anyway.

Actually, I think you'll find there will be very little the government can do - the Sky/BBC deal is legal under the terms of the Concorde Agreement, the British Grand Prix is guaranteed to be shown live on the BBC, and there is a precedent for international sporting events with British competitors and teams being shown on Pay TV.

The problem is more spending 18m to make viewers pay to watch sky when it could have gone 100% to ITV, C4, C5.

BBC was the holder of the rights at the time of the deal. They were entitled to do what they wanted with those right, until such time as they handed the right back to FOM.

That is the answer. The BBC wanted to cut costs, but they also wanted to retain the Formula 1 coverage because of the ratings. So they brokered the Sky deal, and will no doubt show the ten races that will get them the most viewership (like Silverstone) live, and show extended highlights of the ten worst-performing races (like Valencia). They're well within their rights to do that. Talk of it being some massive conspiracy to deny Channel 4 and ITV the rights is little more than a conspiracy theory, one dreamt up by angry fans who expected the BBC to show twenty races per year, live and uninterrupted, in prime time and for free.

and some will watch on the sofa because they have Sky Sports :D

This.

Luvverly full and uninterrupted HD coverage and for no extra (to current fees, obviously) charge. Really looking forward to what Sky show next year, their sports coverage is rarely anything other than exceptional.

I'm happy since you don't even need sky sports to watch it, if you have the HD pack you can get it for free as well. So an extra £10 for HD f1 and lots of other HD channels or £20 for SD sky sports, easy choice for me :D

But wait, I still have o be angry because the commentary teams will most likely be split up and anything after Brundle/D.C. will probably be infuriating to watch.

Currently Eurosport have the rights to GP2, GP3 and the Porsche Supercup.

I have a Sky HD box, but I just have the free HD channels and don't have Sky Sports. Anyone know if I qualify to watch the F1 races? Sky website isn't clear on that matter.

The BBC have announced the races they will be showing on free-to-air: China, Spain, Monaco, Valencia, Silverstone, Spa, Singapore, Korea, Abu Dhabi and Brazil.

I can't imagine that this will be a particularly popular choice.

Dammit I will replace Valencia for Suzuka, in any case these broadcasts seems to be more than what I was expecting (I expected 3 races at best).

Personally I like the ones the BBC got apart from yawn fest which is Valencia which they should have replaced with Austin. They got the modern and mostly exciting ones. Most of the older European circuits I'm not really going to miss all that much because we have seen action on them for decades.

I wonder if we will see full replays or at the very least highlights of the ones SKY air, maybe the day after.

At the grands prix that are not being broadcast live, there will be a highlights package shown later in the day.

For the European races this will be a 90-minutes programme broadcast at 5.30pm, while for the events that take place in the Far East there will be a two-hour programme shown at 2pm.

F1 Forum remains, live free practive remains, everything available on the iPlayer, and we'll also be presenting from ALL the races. #bbcf1

Jake Humphrey staying at BBC. David Croft (Confirmed?) and Martin Brundle (Unconfirmed?) to Sky.

I wonder if Ted Kravitz will stay at BBC. I love that guy.

Subscribers to Sky HD get it free. Whereas normally with Sky HD you only get the HD channels for the packs you pay for (ignoring the free ones), this isn't so with the F1 HD channel, thus why you don't need to be a Sky Sports subscriber, but will need to subscribe to Sky HD, which is £10/month.

I'm slightly surprised at this, I didn't think they'd open up their F1 HD channel to non-Sports subscribers.

Man that sucks, I hate live sport with adverts, Hamilton and Vettel battle for the lead... TIME FOR A BREAK... Back on and Hamilton has crashed out, alonso has come in and taken the lead and massa has broken suspension.

When the deal was announced, the BBC made it known that they would be showing ten races live, and that three of them would be Monaco, Silverstone and the season finale.

Awwww, whinge, whinge, whinge. The rest of the world has had to put up with ad breaks for years.

And now BTCC will be the only series I can watch the entire season live on TV. Guess I'll be going to more events at Oulton Park next year then. Maybe I'll take some more plunges and actually go to Donington and Knockhill finally. I can only hope that I don't miss Kobayashi or someone landing their first podium or win next season or in future years.

Why, does that mean we should be happy? You don't pay two fees for the adverts.

I thought it was just the three most relevant races, then is good news (considering that the whole thing could have been done worst by broadcasting it all on Sky without BBC broadcasts).

Does it cover from 2012 until 2018 or is it just for the next season?

It'll be ad free during the race, whether you have the HD pack or not. If you subscribe to Sky sports 1 & 2 but don't have HD, then you'll get a standard def version that will still be ad free.

Sky != ITV.

How much does the TV license or whatever it's called cost anyways?

£145.50 ($224.62) per year per household for your standard colour TV.....

....which is frankly extortionate when most countries have no charge and those that did have mostly scrapped it. Channels which are private actually make more money and therefore can produce better programmes the only negatives being adverts which I don't care less about because I can go off and do stuff during them.

The biggest joke is that you need to pay it even if you don't watch BBC channels. If there was something you could fit to the TV is disable them and not have to pay it would be brilliant.

This is why the BBC is struggling because the licence fee is a pretty much static level of income for them yet the cost of everything is going through the roof hence why they can't afford to totally keep F1.

Sureboss

Thank god for that, I was wondering if they would do it similar to what they do with Football and have 45 minutes without, then cram as many in during the half time break.

Ad breaks? What ad breaks?
