Drift & Rallye Part I: ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles
  • Drifting and rallye driving demands other techniques than road track racing. The wheel spins faster and steering angles are much bigger.

If you don't want to get confused with shifting when your wheel rim is upside down, you need the ClubSport Static Shifter Paddles. They are also a popular choice in many sport cars like Ferrari.

But as you want to drive F1 games with the Formula rim as well, we made the Static Shifter Paddles with a quick release system so you can mount and unmount them within seconds.

The shifter paddle position can be adjusted in many ways to fit all wheel rim sizes. It is made of fine CNC machined and anodized aluminum and matches perfectly to your wheel base.

On the picture and video you see the optional carbon fiber version of the paddles. The default version is black metal.

Available this summer for 79,95 USD / Euro (excl. tax / incl. tax)

Now it's getting serious! Not sure if that is the price with or without the carbon paddles, I am guessing without.
Personally I am a bit unsure about the 45 degree angle of the paddles though, but at least you can mount them flat as well (looking closely at screw holes behind the paddles).

I think this is almost a must have add-on, if only for having the ability to switch between driving styles. For example when staying true to the vehicle you drive in the game, like a Ferrari as mentioned.

Nice, but with all these new products coming I think the supply will be very limited! Considering they can't get to the point were the CSS is in stock months after it's release.

Good point. Maybe they thought 'let's launch loads of products at once just so we only sell a few of each, since people only have so much money to spend at the end if the day after all. This way it won't overload each production line'... Or something like that.

Or perhaps they have been stock piling these new lines? I find it hard to believe that 4 or 5 months after the CSS is released it's never in stock and it's next available 30/9/14!

Personally i do not care about static shifters at all. I do not see any extra immersion factor using static pedals instead of the ones that are already mounted on the wheel.

The handbrake comes too late for me too, i already have one.

I am a game dev so I like to try different sims. Of course nothing comes close from what rFactor2 does when it is about FFB and tire model, Assetto Corsa is nice too, but I can enjoy GT6 or FM too. The perfect combo will be rFactor2 physics, AC UI, pCars graphics, GT content and lighting art director :)
TOTALLY Agree

I personally prefer static paddles except when using a formula rim.

The handbrake is too late here too. No way I am trading my hydraulic handbrake in!
I am sure a lot of people would still like one though. ;)

I'm with HoiHman here. Although have never used static paddles, but I imagine it is not very convenient to use.

I've been waiting for this handbrake, but the main problem is that there doesn't seem to be any easy way to mount it on a CSL seat.
Many are complaining about too short wires included with CSS. It would be pretty funny to have too short wires included with CSHB too so that you can't mount CSHB near you because wires are too short to connect to pedals.

The static paddles on the T500RS are really much easier to use than I expected (I purchased the GTE rim with my T500RS because I was expecting to dislike fixed paddles on anything fast). As it happens, 90%+ of the time those chunky big paddles are fine. Maybe one shift on one corner per lap you have to remember to take a hand off the wheel briefly to click a paddle.

Those CSW paddles look smaller, so I suspect they will be slightly trickier to use when the wheel is turned.

The only thing left to announce is a F1 Style Rim? & we can all wish for an updated CSW Base with stronger motors 💡.

I would like to see how Fanatec prices a direct drive system. Probably >$1,000.

Then there is the 918 RSR rim that was hinted at a while back.

I would have thought: CSS - high R&D cost, very reasonable retail price = need to sell lots of them. Rims - comparatively low R&D cost, high retail price = need to sell comparatively few. Lack of availability wouldn't make sense, but....

It might be that the rim sales are meant to cover the possible loss on the CSS, and that rather than have a balanced business plan for both, the CSS is more for market share and image, and the rims more for bottom line. So to a certain extent, that would mean that the CSS just needs to exist, but the rims need to sell.

Also, I think the bombardment strategy with the newly announced rims will work. All it takes is for one rim to completely hit the mark with an individual, and suddenly the blow of a very high price tag is softened across the range. An emotional response and cost justification for one rim subconsciously allows for the same in others, to the others.

I am with Skazz on this one.

Actually the static paddles are more convenient to use in my opinion, as you always know their position. Yet paddles that rotate with the wheel are hard to figure out sometimes especially in situations where you have to go beyond the normal ~90 degrees left and right range, so say when you have to catch the car and prevent it from spinning out. You simply always instinctively know which side shifts up and what side shifts down, while with rotating paddles you need to think. And the moment when you need to think you often are already too late to execute your action... especially when going over 200km/h.

No clue about the wire length, but hopefully longer. Else you will have to mount it between your legs and handbrake turn with your middle leg.

Funny they used headphone jacks on their handbrake like I did on my hydraulic handbrake. Which kinda makes me wonder if my hydraulic handbrake will work on the CSP electronics board and/or the clubsport usb adapter. 💡
Now I reckon the Clubsport handbrake is potentiometer operated. Than using a stereo 3.5mm headphone jack I think they got the sleeve to be negative/ground, the ring will probably be signal and the tip the positive lead from the potmeter.
Will have to wait for images to be sure though. :P

We all know that Fanatec likes to keep us guessing. That little line confirms that ALL the new wheels will be shipped with the buttons, shifter paddles, encoder and LED display AND usb power.

This is a genius move. Fanatec brings modularity to a whole new level.👍

Welcome to the revolution!

The Fanatec Universal Hub Rim allows you to mount any rim you want to the ClubSport Wheel and keep the full functionality.

Available very soon for just 249,95. You can add one of six automotive grade rims made by Fanatec for 99,95 or you choose whatever rim you prefer.

Alright, my last CSW request... more power!!! And a voltage limiter so you don't burn the motors up by accidentally overclocking the FFB too far.
Though the first thing was a confirmed no-go. :(
So we need to hope for the direct drive to come around quickly.

But yeah, what does it all weigh? All that metal can't be light.

Couple questions:

1. What is the weight of the wheel hub and the additional accessories?
2. Given the PS buttons present on the hub, can you comment PS4 compatibility? I assume you will need this new hub (which is fine)?
3. Would it be possible to insert the required security chip for the Xbox One in a wheel hub with Xbox buttons to make the CSW base XB1 compatible?
4. Could the data port support a "rumble" add on?
5. Does this new hub still have a "logitech mode"?
6. Has the tuning menu changed?
7. Is hot swapping buttons possible?
8. Can we insert our own paddle shifters a la 'old' CSW rims?

Thanks for the Kudos.

1. the weight will be announced later
2. Compatibility depends on the base unit
3. Technically possible
4. yes
5. Depends on the base
6. Depends on the base (no)
7. Depends on the base (yes)
8. Yes. You can even mount the adjustable paddles of the universal hub to your BMW rim

Q&A from comments. Kudos to Thomas for the answers.
