The BMW GT rim with Alcantara would be great.
My flexing and cracking rim on the CSR-Elite really starts to annoy me.

WRC style rim:

Simple and perfect.

Seems like most want round GT-wheel and not formula wheel. I really hope that Fanatec listens because they said that they only make 2nd rim if first one sells.

A: the formula rim will sell well, thomas is just trying to motivate peoples interests here.
B: He said he has prototype(s). So i am sure that means gt as well. dont worry, he wont alienate the GT racers, they are a huge segment. just relax about it until he shows his cards a little more, you will get a GT!

I have no interest in a Formula rim for my Elite. I would like to see an Alcantara wrapped GT wheel, and how about a NASCAR wheel rim?

Thought about that as well. I think a Nascar wheel would be nice as well, I'd buy. What about vintage ones from all racing?

I agree with Left888. Alcantara is like cheap polyester. Just because sports players wear them, doesn't mean we should be wearing them everyday. I'd take polyester over cotton any day of the week when I'm cycling. But I'd prefer cotton when I'm just sitting around. That's called being practical. Not just wearing whatever Michael jordan or Lance Armstrong wears because it makes me look elite.

Going with alcantara is horrible for sweat. It's like holding onto a wet towel after a racing session. The porsche wheels had alcantara, and it still felt cheap. It's been 1 year, the soft fuzzy feeling has flattened, is full of moisture and it stinks.

I say go with what's practical, not just with what simply looks elite.

Wait...you don't wear racing gloves when you sim race :sly:?

Many real racing wheels are made from Alcantara which is why these wheels are. When using an Alcantara wheel you SHOULD be wearing gloves both to increase grip, avoid sweat, and increase the life of the wheel.

You don't have to wear racing gloves. I wear them because I've got tons of old pairs from my real life racing days. But you can get some cheap Mechanix gloves that will work well.

Plenty of real race and high performance cars use alcantara. Very grippy and comfortable. Wearing gloves, even batting gloves would help you. :)

So it's looking like the GT style is more popular so far, an option for the covering material would be a good move from Fanatec as well.

Would Thomas consider offering the Base package with a rim of choice for first time buyers?

Obviously the price would be a bit more.
I'm sure many people would buy an elite, fit a GT rim and never use the standard rim ever.

Maybe Thomas should look into scrapping the standard rim from his manufacturing line.
Fit GT as standard and up the price accordingly.

What do others think about this.

I like it, but there should be some selection in Gt wheels though. I think many of us want one but due to such differing set ups a general GT race wheel might not suffice. The BMW one isn't like the Corvette one, so why not both? Maybe 2-3 general GT wheels that can be bought in the way you suggested so people have something to pick from.

I like leather more because you can feel FFB slightly better. (sounds silly but harder grip on rim makes a difference according to people played with GT2 and turbo S wheels)

I dont get all the fuss about alcantara either. In you like it thats fine, but some act like its something special. Its is only a man made material. Can buy it anywhere and its not that expensive. Holds moisture, wears out fast (maybe wearing gloves helps) and it starts to smell after a while. If you like it fine, but dont make it out to be some rare hard to get material, because it isnt.

It isn't gold or platinum but as far as fabrics go it is expensive and not available everywhere. To buy enough material to cover a standard car rim is about $90.

Alcantara is like a sponge, it doesn't wear that fast and it provides more grip than leather especially if you wear gloves. Imaging racing for 3 hours and having a rubber or leather wheel especially with no gloves - your hands will be gone.

I remember my G27 leather wheel, after 2 hours of racing my hands were starting to hurt as it was difficult to hold the wheel, with CSR Elite that has some alcantara "patches" at 9 and 3 this never happened and it always provides enough grip.

So alcantara is there on racing wheels for a good reason and if you would like to simulate racing the alcantara has to be part of it ;)
