For the first hour, I was shouting at Holland, "Are you England in disguise..."

Apparently France are looking to solve their goalless start to the World Cup by sending one of their strikers home - Anelka, disciplined for comments he's made about Domenech...

I don't understand why the French team don't revolt and send the manager home...it's not like he's got a long contract left and it's also not the first problem that the players have had with him.

The Aussies score!

Incidentally, that means that only France and Algeria have failed to score in two matches so far.

Edit: And Aussies with a straight red again and Ghana with a penalty again.

Amend the naughty step Famine....

I bet Lineker has just wet his knickers with laughter. :lol:

Already have.

Kewell shouldn't have had any complaints there. Daft sod.

That, to me, just illustrates the cheating that is endemic in football. How can he complain against his arm hitting the ball as obviously as that?

That was utterly brilliant though. Telling the referee to look at it again on the big screen because it hit him in the chest...

I was going to make a joke about a nation of convicts being the only one to have had a player straight-red-carded in every game so far, but it would be in poor taste.

According to the commentators, there's been 6 red cards in the last 4 world cup games involving Australia....

Although 3 of them were Croatia and Italy though

19/06/10 - Australia v Ghana - Kewell (Aus, straight red) - FIFA World Cup Finals 2010, Group D
13/06/10 - Australia v Germany - Cahill (Aus, straight red) - FIFA World Cup Finals 2010, Group D
17/06/09 - Australia v Japan - None - FIFA World Cup Qualification, AFC 2nd Round
10/06/09 - Australia v Bahrain - None - FIFA World Cup Qualification, AFC 2nd Round
06/06/09 - Qatar v Australia - None - FIFA World Cup Qualification, AFC 2nd Round

So... wrong? Unless they mean World Cup Finals matches
19/06/10 - Australia v Ghana - Kewell (Aus, straight red) - FIFA World Cup Finals 2010, Group D
13/06/10 - Australia v Germany - Cahill (Aus, straight red) - FIFA World Cup Finals 2010, Group D
26/06/06 - Italy v Australia - Materazzi (Ita, straight red) - FIFA World Cup Finals 2006, 2nd Round
22/06/06 - Croatia v Australia - Emerton (Aus, second yellow), Simunic (Cro, second and third yellow*), Simic (Cro, second yellow) - FIFA World Cup Finals 2006, Group F
18/06/06 - Brazil v Australia - None - FIFA World Cup Finals 2006, Group F

So... wrong again. In the previous 4 games there have been 5 reds, 3 for the opposition. In this and the previous 4 games there have been 6 reds, 3 for the opposition.

Mind you, they referred to the ball as the "julibani" earlier...

*Graham Poll's famous match where he gave two yellows to the same player and failed to send him off - only sending him off when he got a third yellow, 2 minutes later

Even with 10 men the Aussies are making an exciting contest of this match and putting the boring dross that England performed yesterday to shame...
Maybe TM's comments about the England team taking the first plane to Oz if they fail to win are a good idea. They could at least teach us a thing or 2 about playing with some passion, grit & determination! (and spookily as I was typing that, the BBC commentators mentioned Aussie grit & determination! :scared:)

There's fifteen minutes left yet...the commentators just said so...;)

Has to be said, this is proper end-to-end stuff. If England get through and face Germany in the next round... Australia's 4-0 drubbing will look like an even game.

I'm really disappointed that Japan didn't win against The NetherlAands, or at least draw. They had several good opportunities which they kept messing up, but their tactics seemed to work reasonably well for the first half, but that save was awful, and their playing clearly required a lot more effort than that of the Dutch.

Japan have a well organized team, this makes them hard to break down from an attacking perspective. Japan were playing for the draw there and not the win, in that sense they certainly didn't deserve a win from the match.

I still think Japan has what it takes to progress, and I hope they do.

Me too. Although I don't see them reaching the quarter-finals.

Most of their shots were way too high, and they were clearly desperate for a goal, Holland seemed comparitively relaxed throughout. During half-time they showed their tactic of pushing the ball back-and-back into Holland's end just by running at them, and not attempting a tackle. Mind you at this level everybody is so good that tackling is extremely difficult.

C'mon Japan! :D

Except Australia. And South Africa :D

It's worth noting that the group stages normally see oddness, before normality is restored in the later stages. There's usually an odd team in the semi-finals ( 2006 - Portugal;

I don't agree with you there.
I didn't saw South Africa match against Uruguay, but they pressed well against Mexico in the second half of the opening match.

Also, Australia could stand up against Gana ferocity with only 10 man on field.

I don't think as well, that Portugal reaching the semi-finals in the 2006 World cup was such an oddity. We had a great team and a better coach. We could had gone further but alas, we always seem to lose against the French. :indiff:
It would be a real oddity if we can pass this group phase with the team we have now. 👎

I don't agree with you there.

I don't think as well that Portugal was such an oddity in the 2006 World cup.

They had only been in one World Cup Finals semi-final before - and never a final. They've only ever been in three other International semi-finals - Euro 84, Euro 2000 and Euro 2004 - one final - Euro 2004 - and have never won a major tournament.

In that respect they were the odd team in the 2006 semis. At least as much as England were the odd team at Italia 90 - and England have, just like Portugal, been in three other International semi-finals (World Cup 1966, Euro 68, Euro 96) and one final (World Cup 1966) but, unlike Portugal, won one (World Cup 66).

I class both teams as "an odd team in semi-finals". I'd class Greece as an odd team in semi-finals too, and they won Euro 2004!

Understood. :) I was classing the oddity of getting to the finals and semi-finals based on the teams real "effort" and not by the number of times a team got there.

Incidentally, this is the first match of the Finals so far that a team can be eliminated.

If Cameroon lose to Denmark, they will be 3pt behind both Denmark and Japan, who play each other next (with Netherlands top).

Whilst football doesn't particularly interest me, numbers and statistics do, so I have to ask: if England and the US draw their remaining games, how is it decided who goes through? If it's based on goals, than how do they decide if England - Slovinia is 2-2 and the US - Algeria 0-0?

"Tie-breaking criteria

For the World Cup tournament, FIFA uses the following criteria to rank teams in the Group Stage.

1. greatest number of points in all group matches;
2. goal difference in all group matches;
3. greatest number of goals scored in all group matches;
4. greatest number of points in matches between tied teams;
5. goal difference in matches between tied teams;
6. greatest number of goals scored in matches between tied teams;
7. drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee."

Yes, really.

If that result happens, they would have to draw lots.

This has to be one of the better spectacles at the world cup so far, these teams both seem to be willing to attack, have shots on target (imagine that England fans!) and there's been good saves from both keepers and defences.

Has anyone scored directly from a freekick this tournament so far?
