And it's started. Being from South Africa I still see Mexico winning the opening game.

:ouch:

Apparently there's an iPhone vuvuzelas app!!! That's going to make the pub annoying :grumpy:

The app is rubbish. Sounds nothing like the real thing lol

I've just noticed, that the South African football team is extremely contrasting from the South African cricket team. I wouldn't like to speculate as to why that is though. :odd:

First awfull mistake of referee:tdown:
Invalidated first GOAL of the tournement:dunce:

EDIT: Sorry I was wrong:guilty:

This rare situation induced me in error...but I could have waited for some replays, indeed:dunce:

I'm not going to pretend I knew that part of the offside rule but, if it's right, it was a very good call by the officials.

But it wasn't a goal because it was offside. It would set a bad precedent for the tournament if officials allowed offside goals to stand. :dunce:

The rule states that you can't pass to a player who is in front of the opponents last two players.

Normally we just call this the last player, because 99% of the time the goal keeper is always behind the opponent striker anyway, and thus the final defender would determine the offside line.

In this rare scenario, the goalkeeper ran out from his net and was in front of Mexico's striker when the ball was played to him. Since there was just a south africa defender in front of him, but no second south africa player (normally goally but not in this case) he was deemed off side.

I probably have explained this in a very muddled fashion, so to keep it simple, in this rare set of circumstances, south africa's goal keeper accidentally played caused the Mexico player to be offside by running beyond him past him just moments before another mexico player passed the ball to him.

Good decision by the official, very well spotted.

Indeed, a very good call by the assistant 👍

Great through ball and a stunning finish.

I don't think this game is over yet though, not by a long shot.

Thanks for clarifying; it very rarely occurs in that situation. Out of interest, did you know that or did you just look it up?

First goal - a belter! :)

I already knew that courtesy to my brother who told me a few years ago, He is a part time referee and likes to impart rule book trivia upon me. :ill:

I don't recall seeing it happen in any match in the last few years though.

I love the fact that the ITV commentary makes it seem like everyone in SA lives in a makeshift hut where there is only one TV for the whole village

Yep, really poor - they said the 'school' didn't have electricity, now it's the whole village

I'm in my little hut on my bicycle peddling like mad to power the generator to power my TV to watch the game  My village idiots are cheering me on.
