My thoughts on PS5;
It does everything I wanted it to do, it's Gran Turismo in the truest and best way possible. I love the main single player campaign, the menu system is a clever and unique idea to get progression going, encouraging you to try different cars and explore the game. I like how you have to earn things, nice to get a sense of some progression and having to unlock and earn things. There is a lot to do, and it is a good challenge, the races can be hard but that is what will keep me coming back for more. I even kind of enjoy the Music Rally stuff, be interested to see how far they take that mode. Pairing it with Spotify or Apple Music on PS to analyse and use songs from you own playlists would be amazing but I don't think that will happen.
Visually it is a treat as expected, the cars look outstanding, like properly outstanding, the detail and care that has gone in to each one is still unparalleled in gaming. The audio is also really good, some cars still sound a little static or bland but compared to GT6 it is night and day. GTS obviously made big steps here too. The tracks, whilst not up the same unbelievable standard as the cars, look more than good enough. Particularly the ones built bespoke for GT7 like Deep Forest and Trial Mountain, and it makes me excited to see what gets added. The weather effects look incredible and very lifelike, the particle effects are a vast improvement over previous games as well and everything is just so sharp and clear.
I'm enjoying the physics, I appreciate the moves they've made and the increased in challenge that comes with that. The cars feel a bit more lively, especially over bumps, rumble strips and off road. Combined with the Dual Sense controller and it is a real joy to drive this game. I love how the adaptive triggers feel, the resistance offers more control over the input I find, making it a little easier to feather the throttle and modulate braking, its a minor but very nice thing. The haptics feel fantastic, gives everything a real sense of movement.
Upgrades and customisation is way beyond what I was personally expecting. It is a lot of fun to modify cars now instead of it feeling like a bit of a chore or just a means to an end. Everything feels much more cohesive and purposeful, certain parts are clearly there to encourage certain types of builds and the fine tuning that can be done with different combos will give this game huge life. Likewise the visual side, so much more visual customisation than I was expecting here, with different body addons, widebody kits, grills wings etc. Really very good.
Downsides for me so far?
The chase cam is too rigid to the back of the car, needs to move around a little more, that will help with some of the lack of feel from that view.
A master menu button or shortcut menu would be appreciative, it takes a bit too long sometimes to go from one place to the next, even on a PS5.
There doesn't seem to be that many wheel choices, not a great deal of manufacturers and a lot of similar wheels within them.
Tyre pressures! Come on.
Engine swap system is restrictive and bizarre, and not even in a way that could be blamed on micro-transactions. It's just flat out, needlessly, stupidly restrictive. Not talking about how many cars engines can be put in but more the lack of being able to actually get engines to do it.
Roulette prizes are trash.
Tentative/undecided points?
Possibly a lack of events? I'm admittedly maybe not even halfway through the menus, level 12 collector, but there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of race events unlocked so far. I'm assuming based on the fact that there were Gr.3 events open from the start that events are perhaps linked to your garage and will unlock accordingly. But so far a possible concern.
Sport Mode doesn't seem as intuitive as before, it's been a few years since I went on GT Sport but there doesn't seem to be the same intuitive feel as before.
Car list, not in the quantity sense, but in the, where on earth is everything sense. I get that the UCD will rotate (slowly) as will the legends dealer, but there isn't much in the UCD, the same things seem to float around in it for a while and given how many cars are in the game, it may be untold weeks until you see something you actually want to buy. I would have preferred a more dynamic UCD like in previous games, tied to in game days rather than IRL day cycles. It is however, day 3 of release, so once the game really gets moving, we will see how quickly it cycles through the cars that will show in the UCD.
In all, as someone who considers GT4 to be the best overall Gran Turismo, still got immense enjoyment out of GT5 and GT6 and didn't warm to GTS due to its lack of 'Gran Turismo'ness', I'm a big fan of GT7. It does enough to keep the fornula fresh whilst feeling familiar in all the right ways. It's a few odd design choices away from being the perfect racing game, and perhaps in a few months and a couple updates time, it will be.
