NB is so gnarly in these low grip sweepers, just happy to be on the grid. Can't wait for the race as I suspect this will be more about running cleaner rather than blinding quickness. Mistakes in the Cali desert are so painful.

oh... and in couple hours (watching the F1 race on delay) I'm going to be tuning my GT car in my lounge if anyone is bored.

So what's the plan to avoid the connection issues we had last week?
That wasn't the first time we've had connection issues in this series. I know there are some things beyond our control (GT5 servers, ISP's, etc) but we should take all the steps we can to increase the chances of a lag-free race.

  • Those who normally run wireless: consider running a cable temporarily if possible for race days.
  • Optimize your router settings (port forwarding, DMZ, router priority, etc).
  • Reboot your modem and router prior to race.
  • Clear cache in GT5.
  • Stop any Bittorrent downloads (or any other heavy network traffic).
  • Different host?

Network gurus please chime in and add to this list. I'm very far from an expert in this area (just did some Googling this morning :))

Congrats on the Pole Outlaw :gtpflag
Congrats on the pole, outlaw! You definitely have that last sector figured out.
Thank you, gentlemen. I know both of you are very fast so to be able to be in front is a great accomplishment. :)

Those sound like good ideas to me. I sure hope we don't have any lag issues like last time because unlike Autumn Ring Reverse, the margin for error is much smaller and the penalty for a mistake is much less forgiving.

Also, I said this earlier but it's important to re-emphasize so that no one gets caught off guard during the race. Be VERY careful when going to pit entry. You WILL smash right into the wall if you don't brake before entering and the game WILL reset your car at least once if you try to cut the bend onto pit road. Doing both will cause you to lose precious time and possibly impede other racers trying to get in.

Yes, everyone please make sure you are doing everything you can to ensure you have the best connection possible. I run my PS3 with a fixed IP through a wired connection. I also utilize DMZ rather than port forwarding just to make sure I don't miss anything. Stopping all torrent traffic is an absolute must and possibly the easiest of all to control.

Thanks everyone!

how dare you accuse of us illegally downloading music/movies/games/software!!!

(if you need a demonoid invite pm me)

I'll give up my spot. I really need to wrench on a car this evening anyway.

If you're really ok with it, that would be great man. I mainly mentioned the three guys above because they haven't raced with us lately and don't have any points.

So what's the plan to avoid the connection issues we had last week?

I'm going to open the room earlier than normal, so hopefully everyone can show up early and that should give us some time to straighten things out. However, I do agree that wireless people should go hard-wired for the race as a wireless connection last week is what slowed the race down for a few of us. It cleared up when that person lagged out.

Not so sure we need a new host. My connection is pretty solid as long as I have it dedicated to nothing else but the race.

Yep, I'm good with it. I have only participated in one race anyway, so no big deal.

That's the weird thing for me. When I tried setting up a practice room on Thursday, everyone had problems getting in. My setup was a wired connection, UPnP disabled on both my router and PS3, my PS3 assigned a static IP and placing that static IP on a DMZ. It didn't work. At a loss, I remembered that I had port forwarding when I used to have a wireless setup. I did that, forgetting to turn off DMZ in the first place and it WORKED.

For the record, when I run a speed test through my PS3, I get a NAT 2 with a 11.0 upload and a 2.0 download on average. I believe that puts me at "high" when I try to open a public room when I used to have "very high" when I was living in Vegas.

Adding to what Egghead said, if your PS3 sees any Computers in your network as Media servers, turn them off, and/or disable media servers in your PS3 settings.

Don't have any points? I am 8th in the standings and possibly could be top 5 if I had known the race time had been moved up on Father's Day. I didn't bother qualifying last week because I checked the first page of the thread and it said race time was 10:30 EST.

I tried to get in the race last week when I found out the time had changed. It would have been nice if you had done the same thing last week for people in the points chase.. But, I made nothing of it, because I wouldn't want to boot someone that qualified, from the race.

So exactly how was it determined that the wireless connection was the issue? It's kinda inconvenient for me to convert to wired set-up.

You can still race if you want, someone else stepped up.

You're good to race, so no worries. ;)

Edit: And the race times have never changed?

Then I must have totally misread the first page last week. I knew I had to be done with the race by 9:30/10:00 EST, and checked the first page and thought I saw 10:30 EST for race start time. Maybe I looked at the GT class? So I didn't bother qualifying.

Sorry if that came of strong Turbo.

I was bummed when I couldn't get in the race last week when I realized race time was 8:00EST. I sent you the message via PSN and was on the PS3 during the race. I appreciate that you responded, but wished I was allowed to take the spot that opened up.

I understand it is tough to keep all of us happy every week. I appreciate all your efforts in running the series.

Wireless tends to be less stable. That being said, I have wireless and I have a fantastic connection. As long as you have a strong internet connection you will be fine :)

Am I still allowed in this? Just have been busy during this time and can I participate? It's fine if I can't I'll just try to get next week, I haven't even bought a car yet :S

Unfortunately we're racing the clock on Sundays as I really wanted to get the race started so that Wardez could get to work on time. We did have an extra spot and I tried to get Brosif in as he thought he would be gone for the race and ended up being available. He didn't respond to messages so I really had to start the race.

And yeah, GT class starts at 10:30-ish. We hardly stick to that schedule as the GT race usually starts shortly after the Spec finish. We'll probably be getting rid of the GT class (sort-of) for next season, so there shouldn't be any confusion.

No space this week, sorry. And this is the last race so there won't be a next week, but keep an eye out for the Season 3 thread soon.

^^^ Mine always says "NAT Type 2, very high bandwidth".

same here... and I'm on wifi :P

But I also have two advanced degrees in networking and work at a datacenter... so my house is a bit more over engineered than the average. ;)

---> oh GT room @ 1472-closed

1'32.1 quick for GT? Feels like 31's would be my ceiling.

Did that this morning (static IP with DMZ) 👍

Torrents aren't illegal...just 99.999999999% of the content is

Good point 👍

Good idea, I'm going to disable this in the PS3 settings for the race.

Updated "No Lag" List:

  • Those who normally run wireless: consider running a cable temporarily if possible for race days.
  • Optimize your router settings (port forwarding, DMZ, router priority, etc).
  • Reboot your modem and router prior to race.
  • Clear cache in GT5.
  • Stop any Bittorrent downloads (or any other heavy network traffic).
  • Disable media servers
  • Ensure you are at NAT2 (or NAT1)
  • Using a different DNS server may help depending on your ISP
  • Changing MTU size may help
  • Different host?

Instructions for DMZ, DNS, and MTU changes HERE

Edit: Race room is OPEN
