Fuel

Personaly, I don't think it will matter seeing as how I can only get 15 laps out of super slick tires in gt3 - no way I'm gonna run out of gas that short.

Now, if tires would last as long as they actually do or you could choose how much fuel to add, this might be a concern.

Umm... I could kill gas that quick... thats what... 20 miles? Keep the car way up there in the revs.. you'd eat up 10 gallons of gas with a big car. I could see it being an issue, escpcialy on non gas friendly cars

I think, 1: The prius test in prologue (where you conserve fuel), 2: The pit crews, and 3: The fuel icon on the HUD, all prove that fuel will be an addition. I really hope however that at least that fuel icon either changes from blue > green > yellow > orange > red, (like the tires wearing away) or that the icon gets filled up to the top and diminishes down as you use fuel. This low-gas-light possibility is not appealing to me at all. I'd really prefer something even more accurate so that in practice I could run maybe 5 hot laps and determine a good average usage per lap.

From the Album under GT4 Gallery Album:Untitled (Looks like B-Spec mode)
This Skyline has plenty of fuel for the Nurb to make it this lap.

What about how the fuel load affects the handling of the car? And how the driver's driving style, throttle usage, the lines he/she takes, will affect the fuel consumption? Wouldn't all these have to be taken into account?

Can you imagine passing the pits on the nurb and then the "Low Fuel" light comes on.

Yeah, I'd turn around, and yell at my PS2..(turn the car around and head for the pits that is..)

Thanks for that B-Spec pic cjrciadt 👍, I totally missed that fuel meter everytime I looked at that shot - that's exactly what I want for in-car HUD, though I havn't seen it yet. :grumpy:

I think with the physics the way they are now, (and a DFP), you would most likely be able to notice the slight difference in handling, accel, and braking, with a full vs empty tank, so yeah, fuel load should have influence on car feel I agree.

knowing PD i'd only be surprised if it wasn't factored into the new physics engine 👍

I think the addition of fuel to all races would be a great idea. Imagine the early races. 2 Laps of of Grand valley East. Technically you would not need more than 1 Imp. gallon ( 4.54Ltrs) to do the race but you decide to be on the safe side and put 2 in. In time you learn how much fuel your car will use in a race. So better to gauge it. And 90% of all cars won`t go round the ring without using less than a gallon on a flying lap. The other good thing would be the sbility to change the tire types at pitstops. So that you can alter your strategy depending on circumstances. Any way 3 months to go maybe a month til the first full review can`t wait.

Anyway, even smaller engines (< 1.6 liters), when pushed to their limits, can have fuel consumptions in the 3-4 km/liter range.

lol tell me something new. My 70cc Scooter, although it is pretty much souped up, does 8 km/liter. It is a two stroke though.

I think that instead of just a few options in a short list like you guys are talking about, there could be a big list of changes to make, each change making the pit take longer. The functionality could simply be a list of options with a light next to it that you either turn on or off. To change the light just down arrow to it and press [X]. You could even setup preferances for which options are defaultly selected before each race. And you could select certain settings for each option, like half a tank or full tank, while you're in the pit.

I would seperate front and rear tires as individual options. I would also have 1/4, 1/2, and full tank of gas as options. I would want some tuning options (like lighter or stiffer suspension, ride hight, downforce ...), but figuring out how to input those options quickly could be difficult. Maybe just "increase 1 increment" or something. I think dirt should be evident during the race on the screen, and a window washing be a pit option.

And I don't think the player should have any input on how fast the work is performed. Pressing a button rappidly is NOT COOL. And besides, you're the driver, not the pit crew. You don't see Schummy get out and change a tire.

From what we've heard, there are more options in the pits now, including fuel/tires, and even the ability to change what tires they put on. Whether it'll be front/rear is anyone's guess, but in the normal setup screen, there's already options for front/rear, so it's entirely possible.

Also remember that the vast majority of the screens we've seen (with the possible exception of that Skyline pic above) are from Arcade Mode, where tire wear doesn't even come into play, so I doubt fuel will, either. Remember, in GT3 (and 1 & 2, probably), the tire wear indicator didn't even appear on-screen unless the race required it. So it's likely that in Endurance races or otherwise long races, there will be a fuel meter that will appear on-screen, in races that require it. The fuel "icon" is part of the standard HUD, so is probably there all the time, just like the Oil icon in GT3.. even in Arcade mode, where you could never change the oil, the icon was there. I imagine the fuel indicator we've seen in Arcade screenshots is no different.

Well, it also depends on the length of the enduro. I'm talking about the current 7th gen Civic (2001+) that I drive, it would, without a doubt, last a 100 mile enduro no problem, stock of course. But you get my point, right? Some cars would last longer than others.

Agreed. By the way, you should check out 7thgencivic.com sometime if you havn't already! I too have a 7th gen civic. Check it out at www.cardomain.com/id/nightkid86 !

But there is the option to have have tire wear in arcade mode in GT3. It's in "Professional", and it can be turned on in multiplayer.

Very good quetion. Additionally, there is the question of brake bias front to rear which changes with changing fuel load.

Yeah, I know. But unless you go into "Professional" mode, the tire wear indicator isn't even on-screen. I think the same is true for the fuel guage. It just isn't there unless it's needed. And even in a ten-lap Professional race, fuel might not be required (with the possible exception of the Nordschleife).

perhaps, money can be spent on training the pit crew, so they get progressively faster as you spend more money on their training. oh yea...perhaps, some cars can change tires faster, like cars with open wheels...(ie F1)

Fuel, damage, and pit stops would be more appropriate in racing simulators. I believe that driving simulators are more for just racing and admiring the cars rather than competing in a complete season. Although, there are the race cars. Still, if you have no season, league, or commentators, why bother trying to make it more like one?

Im not sure what the layout of the game will be but if it's similar to GT3 I think fuel would be interesting to have in endurance races or championship races.

There are pics. and probably videos of the fuel guy in the pits filling up a gold 350z

Well he could be there just for the asthetics of it. I wouldn't say that that garountees fueling in the pitstop for gameplay.

I think the addition of fuel would only add to the game, but I hope they don't do it halfway. That is I hope that the game 'tracks' fuel EVERY time you drive in your car, thus it makes you have to ALWAYS keep an eye on it, and make sure you're not going to run out whenever you go test or drive an event.

In events, especially endurance ones, you should only need to put in fuel as is necessary, and you should be able to determine to what level you fill the tank up when you do (this fuel cost get taken out of winnings???).

Hopefully the fuel usage will be somewhat realistic as it bugged me that supersoft tyres only lasted about 25-30 racing km's. So hopefully you don't have to pit for fuel every 6 laps or so... unless it's the Nurb... :D

So basically in short, game tracks fuel always and you have to monitor it constantly, like RL.

Makes sense, no point pitting in a five lap race.

So when you get into your car to go to work do you not look to see if you have enough gas to complete the trip??? The same should be done for GT races no matter how short...

Scenario: Person does some tests or just some 'hotlap cruising' in a car, then enters an event, he should be aware of how much fuel is in the tank... plus now there's qualifying and the ability to go into pits to adjust settings you should be able to fuel up so to speak...

Yeah :( is about right SHIRAKAWA Akira, another good idea (fuel) done half-ar$ed...

It's not only about pitting, it's also about fuel weight. 30-40 kilograms of fuel (or 60-70, or even 90 for bigger cars) WILL affect handling while racing.
