Safety pins consist of a rigid wire (with one very pointy end) heated and bent with a 540° loop at its halfway point and a press-formed clasp. If both components are conductive as they would have to be, simply releasing one end of the wire from the clasp won't cause the current to terminate at the clasp because the other end of the wire is still connected to it.Maybe a piece of wood to push it apart.
But like anything electrical, I wouldn't want to mess with it too much!
